Homeless shepherd starts world's smallest farm. Fits in DIY wagon

- Aaron Fletcher has been a nomadic shepherd for about a decade, but more recently he has settled down as a land sitter, running what is probably the country’s smallest viable farm.

When we first met Aaron a couple years ago, he and his sheep would pull his wagon home 5 to 10 miles every day in search of greener pastures. He sleeps and rests in his mini wagon, while his sheep "guerrilla graze": eat roadside weeds and trim vacant lots and yards (with permission).
Wanting to use his abundant milk, and generate a small economy for himself, Aaron invested in an ice cream maker, three mini fridges and a solar battery. This extra weight required larger animals to pull the wagon so Aaron tried out a donkey. Recognizing that equines are too big and dangerous for such close quarters, Aaron now plans to re-home it and buy a human harness to help pull the wagon himself.
While he waits for a harness to pull his heavier wagon, Aaron is farm-sitting for a city-dwelling land owner. Here there are plenty of fresh eggs and the calm to invent new systems for his micro mobile farm.
Aaron says his main job is juggling milk: to “balance year-round cheesemaking outdoors, on the go, with no refrigeration.” He’s worked out a system so when milk is most plentiful he makes butter and big cheeses, when he’s getting about 3 cups per milking, he makes ice cream and when he is milking under 3 cups per milking, he makes kefir and single batch fresh cheese.

I love that you have been following Aaron's journey over the years. He is a lesson in living an intentional life.
Was just thinking about Aaron. What a great dude, living the good life and staying curious. Much respect.
Ditto!
@@carolewarner101 he's one of my heroes
He stays happily inventing.. we stay happily watching
Aaron"s goat cheese meals looked absolutely delicious - - That grilled cheese sandwich with aged goat cheese, vegetables and organic whole grain bread would be $20 in most USA cities.
Hes not homeless.. This whole country is his home.. The way he wants it.. Hats off to him
Definitely not “homeless.” Aaron is a real american hero.
Yes, the world is his home ❤️
Homeless by society’s standards but yes, you’re correct.
I would agree that he is not homeless, but I do find something very sad about his existence. I saw a video about him nearly 5 yrs ago and he seems to have no life beyond his animals and the curious onlookers who approach him.
@@davevillaire2990 haha! As compared to what? Hitting the clubs? Having a mortgage and job that he gets weekend relief from? The opportunity to go on expensive vacations that are a brief escape from a miserable life?

This man is living the dream, no cooperation job and he got to eat ice cream everyday. What a life
This is how you thrive in any recession or societal collapse. I'd like to see other people adopt similar lifestyles with other areas of agriculture!
“pasteurization of our lives is not a good thing”
funny yet absolutely true, says more than enough about the modern world.
My dear Kirsten, the tale of this shepherd named Aaron has certainly stirred my hobbit curiosity! A nomad, a shepherd, and a farmer, all at once - that's an extraordinary blend of roles that goes far beyond my simple life in the Shire.
His wandering life, the wagon he calls home, his flock, his self-sufficiency - it reminds me a bit of my own unexpected journey. And the fact that he uses his sheep to "guerrilla graze" roadside weeds - what a clever, resourceful fellow!
And his endeavour to make cheese and ice cream on the go, with no proper pantry or larder to store it! It's quite the feat, and such a hobbit-like delight for dairy products. I do hope he finds time to enjoy a second breakfast between all his work.
So here's to Aaron, a brave and enterprising soul, far more adventurous than any hobbit I know. Keep on with your journey, and may your path always lead to warm hearths and bountiful pastures. I do hope he knows, the road goes ever on and on.
The states spend millions on weed control, especially thistle. Goats love thistle, the thistle brings nutrients to the surface, and goat droppings restore soil nutrients. Seems like there should be more herders along the highways and byways. I imagine the authorities frown on it as a hazard.
He is a cool person, not hurting anyone and his job Shepard.
It's always interesting to see what he's up to. Simple, and yet fascinating lifestyle.
This guy may be homeless, but the goodness in his heart does not mean he is helpless! He is totally self sulf sufficient! He works in complete harmony within his means and environment. ❤❤❤
He's back! Love this guy! 😀
I often think of Aaron and his grassing family! He is in my thoughts and prayers to keep him safe. He is so knowledgeable about the milk and processing! He show write a book! He is so interesting and brave to seek his own path no matter how unique! Thank you for this new video on his life adventure! Stay safe and healthy!!
Aaron's not homeless, not in the way most people think of homeless. He is an amazing nomad, by choice. He's amazing!
I remember you interviewing Aaron before. He made quite an impression on me the first time I saw him wandering happily. I have thought of him a good number of times since that video you did Kristen. Now it seems he's found a place among honorable neighbors and can do a bit more.
Please continue to update us about Aaron over time as this is a most interesting story with a lot of morality connected to his life to consider. 😊
Frankly, I have so little understanding of old world skill like Aaron does he mystifies me. The more I watch his methods and mind work the more amazing I find him. This really needs to go from Kristen's video work to being published for schools and people to read. Bygone eras like this are exceedingly rare especially mixed with his modern infuse natural methods.
He has his own channel...
@@Tadneiko thanks. I didn't know that. I'm signing up that channel.
It's Great to see him thriving!
So long as he is happy; it's a difficult life. I wish him well.

I love how you've kept up with Aaron Fletcher. I've watched him from your earlier videos years ago. It's amazing how he's lived this life style for so long.
I’ve seen a documentary on him years ago and found him to be fascinating but now I’m more blown away by his talent for making cheese and ice cream, I love his donkey and it’s too bad he not going to keep it but I understand why he’s doing it. He is a fascinating man who is highly intelligent and if I was younger I would look him up and hangout with him and have him teach me everything he knows. Such a gifted soul ❤❤❤
This is a lucrative, boutique market. He has intimate knowledge of his animals and production practices and could secure more land and scale up. I don't think he wants to. He is perfectly content with his choices, but he has built his life on the unspoken premise of being a _solitary_ shepherd.
And he's really trying to model how others can do this on a super small scale. He does a lot of things on his own/in a solitary fashion, but seems to be a real networker and community builder. If you barter/trade, you have to build a community of people to barter/trade with and he seems to be successful in that. Having a platform in which many can participate would be helpful so others can join in. I love how Aaron is offering products that are made by others. Those soaps are beautiful. :) And all those foods look so tasty. The meals he cooks in his solar oven tool look amazing. All the best to Aaron, his sheep/pets, Kirsten and fam and all those reading the comments in this section. :)
I love Aaron. It proves you are able to hold a passionate intelligence and live one with nature. He is always an inspiration.
I love this man. As you start to watch him and listen to his homespun knowledge, he goes from being a mad scientist to The Farmer's Almanac. His knowledge and self sustainability is wonderful. It's great to see a happy american that's not weighed down with the materialism and the stuff that we all think will make one happy...God bless you brother do you! You are a National Treasure!
What an artisan savant!
He is da GOAT 🐐
At first I was thinking, "this is weird." But then as I gradually watched it, I got it. Actually this was a brilliant interview and video, and I would never have expected that based on the first minute or so. Thank you
Aaron sings when he works and I would think he really enjoys his time doing this. Love it!
When I lived out in colorado, our water came right from the melted ice and snow off the mountain. It would travel down the canal right to the house, unfiltered. Tasted so good and was full of microbes. Never felt more healthy than living out there drinking that water, breathing the clean air, and eating all the organic produce from the valley and free range meat and dairy.
Pecorino Romano and Parmesan Reggiano are both Italian sheep's milk cheeses - sheep's milk being the standard for those cheeses. There's a very noticeable taste and texture difference from cow's milk Pecorino and Parmesan cheeses, of which are the standard product available in most grocery stores, but if you're lucky enough to find yourself the sheep's milk made cheeses in your local grocery store, you'll never be satisfied with anything but that on your spaghetti ever again!
Its always a joy to check back in with Aaron. This channel has developed a nice cast of characters to follow and see how their approaches and life styles develop and sustain over the seasons and years.
This dude is amazing. His knowledge is incredible
He definitely seems more at home than many.
I love that he seems so content in what must be a very difficult life in so many ways. Obviously if he didn’t enjoy it he wouldn’t keep doing it.
It is wonderful that he found a simple way of life to sustain himself and animals. I only wish he kept himself and animals cleaner in working with foods. I am not a farmer - maybe this is a normal way for animals to be on farms. And he was very careful in handling the milk, ice cream ect.
I love how gentle he is with his sheep.
Man, he has so much first hand working knowledge of these things that it could be a masterclass for those who want to understand how to do it themselves without all of the unnecessary steps or accoutrements that are typically used, as the "right/modern way" of doing it. The blending of old world skills with some small modern accessories to get the best of both worlds is just testament to his personal innovation and problem solving. There should be more nomadic people doing this sort of thing in a general region (like a state or 2) doing this sort of thing - it would be the self sufficiency and personal growth that many are seeking, and can be taught as an apprenticeship as one moves on to other things, while handing off the habits, knowledge, routes & region to a new person to tend to and interact with. I feel like this is the missing life's blood to healthy local interactive communities, personally.
Traveling affordable farmhands will be increasingly needed to worktrade for camping/produce by most small farms so that they can be productive enough to stay financially afloat and not have to sell their farms to larger entities as bill gates and black rock are the largest farmland owners in America already trying to monopolize our farmland and obvious food supply. Small farms need to be empowered by a free farmhand movement AND the homeless, as well as disgruntled workers need to be empowered by knowing about the simple farmhanding and property sitting options
I like how he's always improving and trying to make himself more useful to the community.
Amazing man. Kudos to him and God bless him. Living his dream.
Hes not homeless. Hes home free
well he has a home, it just got wheels under it, pondering to do the same
I appreciate the courage of this young man. I respect his hard work. I have dairy goats and had made cheeses, and yogurt. But the lack of cleanliness concerns me. Washing the sheep utter, etc and sheep dairy products are fantastic. When you are offing food to the public you have to be careful. Good luck.
I've been waiting patiently for the Aaron HomeFree video like a good boi and now it's finally here!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Ive loved following his adventure for years!
Thanks for revisiting!
Aaron is just crazy brilliant! The way his mind works is transformational. I really hope he changes his mind about reforming his donkey because I think they’re quite attached, actually. I also think he’ll be grateful in the winter that he kept her.
this guy shows us the way as Moses in the desert how to survive and thrive in this difficult times when programmable money is coming and they are menacing us a food shortages and so on to further enslave us. community and exchange of services are the solution., no money involved . what a great video Kirsten , thank you!
You get it :)
I love the philosophy of taking from the past what works best.
I like the fact that he acknowledges both the pros and cons of steps like pasteurization and incorporates the nuances when he discusses them. So often in today’s society, people completely ignore the nuances when they make an argument. (And sadly, many people don’t want to hear the nuances. They are either too impatient or don’t have the mental capacity to deal with ambiguity.)
Realtalk
I agree it’s all in the details for me. Shows he really knows the process to be able to articulate to others from start to finish. And he equally cares for the health of his animals. That’s nuance in full circle, life cycle.
"Somebody living out of a backpack with a goat" such a great line!
I always love to hear about Aaron! Smoked cheese..... oh, yum! He lives such and interesting and real life!
Aaron is brilliant! So fun to watch his process and good to see how he has transformed since the last shoot. Looking forward to your next visit with him!!
OMG!! I saw your first filming of this amazing man, and he's even more impressive now.
I remember when I saw Aaron for the first time. I am still in awe how awesome and super smart this chap is. His intelligence is the future! Stay blessed always dear.
Thank you so very much for doing another video with him. I just love him so much, This is the third one of him I have seen that you have done.I wish someone could spend time with him and write his biography. Colleges in the area could give college credits for students who spend time with him,. What an experience for the students and spending time with him has to make anyone a better human being.
I fucking love when you check in on Aaron. He’s definitely a kindred spirit in a way…. If things had panned out differently for me, I would be doing a similar thing about now. Maybe a little more creature comfort, but still quite small and mobile. Definitely keep catching up to him when you can, we love the updates!
Genuinly good person! All the best for him!

Wow! Watched this gentleman before and always amazed! Im in Oklahoma, and we have beautiful grazing land here. If he was nearby, I would definitely buy a lion's share of his products. Happy to see our favourite sheep cheese maker expanding his project-so healthy! Best wishes to you! Thanks K and family.
I loved seeing another video of this innovative shepherd! He's a smart guy, and it's fascinating to hear of his knowledge, and of the ways he's figured out to do so many things with what he has, and how he barters what he has, as well. Really enjoyed this!
Good to keep track of our Shepherd! Aaron is a peaceful traveler.

This man is too skilled at what he does. I believe he chooses to live the way he does. He could make a lot of money.
Thank You for the update on Aaron. He seems like such a down to earth wonderful soul, I wish him well.
The way this man's mind works is amazing. I learn so much each time he has been interviewed. Thanks to everyone involved.
Awesome and inspirational as ever 🎉
He is an amazing person with all his knowledge and the way he lives. Thank you for the video, it was very interesting.
I wasn't going to watch this one...I thought omg...homeless shepherd...yeah right. I am so glad I did watch it, he is a man with a great wealth of knowledge. He would make a good friend when times get tough and we run out of refrigeration. People should barter more too.
What a beautiful soul, many blessings
Truly remarkable man. He is an inspiration to all. Thank you for posting this video.
Kirsten and the team I love your videos. They make a refreshing and hopeful change from all the doom going on in the world at the moment. :0)
Very cool. I love your channel. It's a real window into worlds I would know next to nothing about.
I just love that you have visited Aaron again. He is such an awesome man. Still living his best life. Thank you for the updated video.
...and he made the bestest ice creams, cheeseseses, and butteries. Aaron and grazers are awesome.
If anything, that solar power cooker is a solid since the last time ya'll filmed.
Kirsten and crew, this is great. You cover interesting workflows from different angles.
Fascinating. What a pioneer spirit he has ❤️
Taking off grid to a whole new level!
I've been following him since your first episode staring him and his sheep. His mind fascinates me. I've recently learned that the holes in Swiss cheese is only produced if alfalfa dust particles are present. When modern technology changed cheese making, the holes started to disappear. So, those dust particles found naturally in dairy farm cheese production actually make the cheeses better tasting and more authentic to the original recipes. Food for thought.
The sheep cheese looks scrumptious! He needs a churn.
Wow, that looks SO (super) good!! It is good to know there is a person like that AND I am slightly envious! Please be safe and keep on making good stuff! Very wow....
This was amazing!
LUV this guy! He is AMAZINGLY and eccentrically practical. WHAT an inspiring fellow! I thank you 4 taking your travels to meet up with him again. Health and God Bless!
