Trump has threatened a 10% tariff on Canadian oil - how will it impact the industry?

  • U.S. President Donald Trump has said there’s nothing Canada can do “right now” to avoid new tariffs that will be imposed starting Saturday.
Among the more damaging tariffs are those on Canadian oil exports. Experts say Americans would ultimately be hurt as well - especially across the U.S. Midwest.
America's refineries are connected by pipeline to the Alberta oilsands and designed specifically to refine Canadian crude.
Starving them of that supply would have devastating consequences, and there would be a major impact on Canada’s West Coast and Ontario.
    Heather Yourex-West explains.

Your right. Even if relations with the US were solid like they used to be we should diversify our trade. For example, why isn’t Canada exporting more resources to the European Union? Germany, especially has become an industrial powerhouse if we were to start selling to European countries, we could put some of that money into industrializing Canada, which would then increased our economy even more because we could output more furnished/industrial goods like refined oil. Not to mention the fact that we have a lot of land perfect for agriculture, if we could fix our food situation, we could start selling grain globally, especially to Third World countries that are feeling the pain now that Ukrainian grain is unable to make it to their countries.

It takes heated water, plus solvents to thin it enough to get it out of the gravel it's filled with and thin enough to flow. I guess you didn't know that. It's amazing what you find out with the world's knowledge at your finger tips. Also, the oil and gas companies in Alberta and Saskatchewan all lie about their emissions. Their emissions are actually 40 to 60% higher than they claim. Outside organizations studied their claims and found that they lied.

Given that Biden drained the SPR, a week might work. As it stands, the USA requires higher bitumen oil to mix with WTI to produce diesel, Bunker-C and jet fuel, and this heavier oil is getting to be very hard for the USA to replace.
Trump should have waited and refilled the SPR before doing this, tbh. Makes me wonder if there is something that forced him to accelerate his timeline.
The price increases won't be showing up at the gas pumps, but will go up pretty quickly for things like diesel and jet fuel, forcing prices up in ways that Americans will easily be blaming other entities for (they'll blame Russia, China or some other foreigner). At worst, MAGA will blame "Blue States" or something. They may go the Democrat route and just pretend nothing is happening.
The USA tried to go back to Venezuelan sources after the Russian 2022 invasion of Ukraine but were rebuffed. The USA is STILL importing Russian oil to feed a number of it's refinieries along in the GULF OF MEXICO and a few on the east coast. I'm sure Elenskyy knows, but has to hold his tongue or else he won't get his money.
Cutting off Canada causes problems for American landlocked refineries (i.e. Colorado) as they source from tarsands. This will impact diesel, Bunker-C and jet fuel. But importantly for Trump, it won't hit pump prices. Now, has that ever stopped the oil cartel from immediately jacking up prices at even the mention of a potential shock? No, but this is the Trump era and they may hold themselves back ... for a while.

If the government improved Canada‘s agricultural output, we could also start selling to Third World countries that aren’t able to get Ukrainian grain anymore. The EU is a spent and deteriorating industrial power. It was in full decline before 2022 and things have accelerated since then. Plus, the tariffs on Canada and Mexico are also a signal to the Europeans by the Trump administration that they are next. And his tariffs could accelerate the exodus of European industry to the USA. Not sure if the current exodus is overstated, but it's definitely non-zero and tariffs would surely increase it from the current clip.
I find it funny that a nation that has to outsource their drug labs to Canada and Mexico might not have a labour force capable of handling the production of PVC or smelting metal (BTW, the Chinese have an incredible new smelting method that is going to cause chaos on international metals market, particularly bauxite).
I think what is going to happens is that Trump knows he wins either way. If he keeps the tariffs up, okay. His MAGA base will blame foreigners for any hardships anyway. If he 'negotiates' his MAGA base will continue to view him as a genius.

10% Tarrif on Oil should have ZERO impact on employment rate in Alberta. It's like assuming the oil price is 60 Instead of 65. Also for over 5 years oil and gas companies sold oil around 70-85 dollars. That mean they have a lot of resrve fund. Alberta government should mandate oil and gas industry to have Zero unemployment related to tarrifs. Specially now that Alberta has TMX the impact of 5 dollars cheaper is not even sensed.
