Trump has threatened a 10% tariff on Canadian oil - how will it impact the industry?

- U.S. President Donald Trump has said there’s nothing Canada can do “right now” to avoid new tariffs that will be imposed starting Saturday.
Among the more damaging tariffs are those on Canadian oil exports. Experts say Americans would ultimately be hurt as well - especially across the U.S. Midwest.
America's refineries are connected by pipeline to the Alberta oilsands and designed specifically to refine Canadian crude.
Starving them of that supply would have devastating consequences, and there would be a major impact on Canada’s West Coast and Ontario.
Heather Yourex-West explains.

If Canada wants to remain a viable nation, it needs alternative markets. Enough with this US tantrum!
Absolutely
Increase the price to US ., find alternative markets. Maybe keep oil in Canada at affordable prices.
A little for that now, don't you think?
Are you suggesting Trump is Making Canada Great Again (aka: MCGA)?
The Lunacy and incompetence of the Canadian Liberals to have failed in securing trade with the LARGEST CONSUMER MARKET IN THE WORLD!..that is a stone throw away! ..Listen to yourself.

Why don't we refine some of our oil

I can see this galvanizing Canada into a new national dream.
Your right. Even if relations with the US were solid like they used to be we should diversify our trade. For example, why isn’t Canada exporting more resources to the European Union? Germany, especially has become an industrial powerhouse if we were to start selling to European countries, we could put some of that money into industrializing Canada, which would then increased our economy even more because we could output more furnished/industrial goods like refined oil. Not to mention the fact that we have a lot of land perfect for agriculture, if we could fix our food situation, we could start selling grain globally, especially to Third World countries that are feeling the pain now that Ukrainian grain is unable to make it to their countries.
USA consumers pay for the tariffs.
And the point is that dt wants the Americans to buy oil from inside the USA first
@@icantwiththis The USA doesn't produce enough oil to supply themselves, the vast majority of their oil comes from Canada for a reason. They're shooting themselves in the foot as they will continue to buy the tarrifed oil and all petroleum based products will skyrocket in price everywhere in North America.

@storm5013 Well, you're wrong. cause daniel already said canada is not using alberta to leverage against America. She's already secured. Her border hammered out a 10% deal with america. Can't we refine oil in canada. Do it ourselves? Keep jobs here.
Nope..you can not get any permit to build a refinery for environmental purposes.
20 billion to build a refinery. Try getting a permit from the Liberals or NDP? Never happen. We sell our oil at a $24 dollar per barrel discount.

@@greguijvfr Can't do that. That would be government interference in the marketplace and Trump would use these trade agreements to block it or retaliate.
Never forget, each time you do any transaction over the Canadian border, it ****HAS**** to go through Toronto. They get a cut. If you suddenly allowed tarsands to be used in east coast refiners, the banks take a hit. They lose the transaction for the sale of oil sands, but also lose the cut when east coast refineries set up purchases from abroad to feed their refineries.
Canada exports heavy oil to US and imports light oil. The Us imports Canadian heavy oil because they don't have enough bitumen to pave their roads.

Cancel the F35, and purchase the Gripen Plane
And cut off all oil and rare mineral shipments to US.
Canada should become self sufficient anyway....showcase Canadian products to the world!
There are specific areas we could do this. We are very good at mining for example but are we supposed to build purely Canadian cars? Realistically it is unlikely ours would be as good as many other nations and it is hard to see how we could compete on price. Plus it is hard to grow Oranges and Avocados here. Much cheaper to import them. There are things we are good at and we show those off to the world and things other people do better then us and we should just buy those from them.
No country is self sufficient. All get resources elsewhere.
That would involve building pipelines, refineries, and increasing mining which Trudeau is heavily against, Canada has some of the largest natural gas and oil reserves yet Trudeau insists on canceling projects to export them
alberta have a weak mind set compare looking for european countries
Suddenly eastern Canada thinks Albertas dirty oil is important now? Hypocrisy.
Agree. Canada needs many oil refineries.
NB "needs" to reopen it Oil oldest veins in history of Crude oil and the other locations and keep it in Canada in an agreement that the oil remains in Canada for consumers from NB to be used for Canadians only. We need the jobs, we have the workers cause hundreds of us travel to Alberta to work the oil fields, me included. Most of the Consultants live in NFL NB could easily supply NFL, NS, Quebec and PEI. We even have a refinery already in Saint John by Irving oil.
Alberta is among the three dirtiest oils in the world. Venezuela, Nigeria and Alberta. It takes heated water, plus solvents to thin it enough to get it out of the gravel it's filled with and thin enough to flow. I guess you didn't know that. It's amazing what you find out with the world's knowledge at your finger tips. Also, the oil and gas companies in Alberta and Saskatchewan all lie about their emissions. That is the dumbest thing I heard all day. If we put an exit tax, the cost of our oil and gas will be so high that the Americans will just buy it from the Middle East. Then no one will buy it.
That’s not how that works. If Canada puts tariffs on gas then us Americans will pump elsewhere and not support Canada gas at all bc it’ll be to much money. And that’s not good for Canada bc that oil money is what keeps the economy from drowning completely. Now in terms of energy America powers on the eastern side of Canada completely. So we can also increase our energy too but if Canada remove energy then they have no one to sale it to. Canada is in a bad corner simpleton bc the economy is too small to take self hits . Now that friendship is being put to the test and the Canadian liberals are threatening to turn our power off in some cities and shut down the flow of oil. What a great friend right?
Given that Biden drained the SPR, a week might work. As it stands, the USA requires higher bitumen oil to mix with WTI to produce diesel, Bunker-C and jet fuel, and this heavier oil is getting to be very hard for the USA to replace.
Trump should have waited and refilled the SPR before doing this, tbh. Makes me wonder if there is something that forced him to accelerate his timeline.
The price increases won't be showing up at the gas pumps, but will go up pretty quickly for things like diesel and jet fuel, forcing prices up in ways that Americans will easily be blaming other entities for (they'll blame Russia, China or some other foreigner). At worst, MAGA will blame "Blue States" or something. They may go the Democrat route and just pretend nothing is happening.

Cutting off Canada causes problems for American landlocked refineries (i.e. Colorado) as they source from tarsands. This will impact diesel, Bunker-C and jet fuel. But importantly for Trump, it won't hit pump prices. Now, has that ever stopped the oil cartel from immediately jacking up prices at even the mention of a potential shock? Why only 10% on oil and 25% on the rest? They need oil. That's what that means. I say hike the price of oil to counter the lost in sales in other sectors.
Why doesn’t Canada just sell oil to the EU? They need oil to escape Russian oil influence and by selling to the EU we could put some of the money into oil refineries.
Canada also has very fertile land, which would be perfect for agriculture, yet food is super expensive. If the government improved Canada‘s agricultural output, we could also start selling to Third World countries that aren’t able to get Ukrainian grain anymore. Canada is missing out on a big international market for natural resources of which we have plenty of.
I also find it funny that the US is going to put tariffs on energy without realizing that nuclear power plants in southern Quebec power all of New York State.
Canadian Tar sands are banned in Europe.
The EU is a spent and deteriorating industrial power. It was in full decline before 2022 and things have accelerated since then. Plus, the tariffs on Canada and Mexico are also a signal to the Europeans by the Trump administration that they are next. And his tariffs could accelerate the exodus of European industry to the USA. Not sure if the current exodus is overstated, but it's definitely non-zero and tariffs would surely increase it from the current clip.
I find it funny that a nation that has to outsource their drug labs to Canada and Mexico might not have a labour force capable of handling the production of PVC or smelting metal (BTW, the Chinese have an incredible new smelting method that is going to cause chaos on international metals market, particularly bauxite).
I think what is going to happens is that Trump knows he wins either way. If he keeps the tariffs up, okay. His MAGA base will blame foreigners for any hardships anyway. If he 'negotiates' his MAGA base will continue to view him as a genius.

American oil plants can't use US crude because it is too light for their columns, Canadian oil is mostly what they use so even if they drill more domestically it won't help them.
if he did'nt desperately need it it would be 25%
Bingo. The orange man down south Keri’s talking like he doesn’t need it but figured it’s worth an exemption.
The US gets 50% of its oil from Canada. When Trump imposes his tariffs the Canadian government should be placing a 30% royalty on this oil after Trump adds his tariff.
Lets add a export tax to oil & gas until tariffs are removed!
I r5hink that will happen
10% Tarrif on Oil should have ZERO impact on employment rate in Alberta. It's like assuming the oil price is 60 Instead of 65. Also for over 5 years oil and gas companies sold oil around 70-85 dollars. That mean they have a lot of resrve fund. Alberta government should mandate oil and gas industry to have Zero unemployment related to tarrifs. Specially now that Alberta has TMX the impact of 5 dollars cheaper is not even sensed.
Ask Danielle Smith the Trumpet.
Ontario, Quebec and BC have said NO to Alberta energy by enacting anti-oil legislation and killing every energy project they could………hope they are happy now!
Turn off the oil taps and hydro electric power to the US. Short term pain for them to realize tariffs are bad.
Canada has the resources
Why play a fail game
Canadians look at your currency. Monday it will go to all time lows lol
Americans look at your gas, automobile and housing prices. Monday it will be at an all time high. 🤣
Canada has been through the great depression and survived we are fine. but can the states last without all of our resources while being so large I don't think so
Say Goodbye to the Loonie...
@ canada has no gold reserves. They sold it all lol
The us needs our energy so demand for the dollar will stay. They need our resources like lumber and minerals too. And we can diverisfy. We will be fine. But we just need to reorganize supply chains so we buy goods from non us companies. Lots of countries to choose from whether in europe or asia.
Re-open refineries Ship it to Russia's customers..Let Putin talk to Trump
Russia doesn't need your oil. Time to bend the knee to the USA
We need Northern Gateway and Energy East
I think a national plan will come out of this
Too late.
@@rb239rtr Too late.
@ Alberta oil will be sold into the USA for years to come. These tariffs may well change the economics, one or two pipelines that draws 2 mmb from the USA will increase the price paid for that oil. It could happen.
Things are about to get more expensive for consumers in the US
To avoid the tariffs, Canada will need to tighten up its border, and not allowing human and drug trafficking to cross into the United States.
And be a lapdog forever
Nope all this was going to happen no matter what .
@@Nutz-e5xyou sound like your imported from chyna
Not true
Trump has said doesn't matter what Canada does, they're getting tariffs
American border guards should also do their job and be resposible for their border, American border guards. Canada has to strengthen the Canadian border, how about all the guns coming into Canada through American border, Does the U.S have border guards.
We now must place a minimum price on our oil. If he wants tariff increases, let him also put up with the price per barrel going up significantly. If he is miserable enough, let's nationalize our oil and more. We can sell it somewhere else.
It’s Alberta oil not Canadas. You’ve thwarted our oil expansion
/vilified too long. Don’t pretend any you have right to it as a leftist
Trudeau hates the oil so much he bought a pipeline to move the oil
Ask Harper and what did it do? I would expect the same if we don't block those American oil companies to lobby our government. Storm Danielle is obviously one of them because she is working so hard to protect not Alberta but the American oil companies.
I agree that oil & gas industry should be expanded it's a shame that it isn't. However Alberta is part of Canada and it is prone to negative impacts by the federal government just like any industries. So if Alberta produces oil it is Canada producing oil unless you wanna separate Alberta from Canada.
@@jmhlin Her protections exist for all companies. USA, Canada, China, and France are all out here in the oil field. Sure though ban them and cut production by 75% overnight and cause over 100,000 job loss. Best one to work for in AB is Schlumberger "France" as they have the best training/equipment, and pay the most.
Now if you want to complain about foreign favouritism complain about Trudeaus 36 billion to LG "South Korea" and Volkswagen "Germany" for their two crappy plants they are importing TFWs to build.
Not much, Americans will just have to pay 10% much for oil.
Great job keeping Americans first.
Alberta is getting a Pass...I would join the USA...Canada and USA should be one country...
Ew no inherit 35 trillion debt what's wrong with you it's also number 149 for safety and there's only 195 countries so that's very poor.
Not going to happen. If you think that, you are a traitor!
Why don't you go there
@@JessicaD.-vb9ho Well I live in Calgary so crime is high. Police don't do anything. Had a woman run a red light hit my car despite 60 cameras being in the intersection cops said "we don't do anything with that". Also had about $120,000 in vehicle damages in my neighborhood including mine due to vandalism around last Christmas. No cops showed up. Later that week I saw 4 squad cars and 6 officers harassing a homeless man for 3.5 hours.
We would also have more control as the USA fed doesn't lean as hard on their states as Canada does to it's provinces. For example I wouldn't expect 14 billion a year in equalization payments to California.
@JohnFreedman0 yet we still make top ten on the index so imagine how bad other places must be. Top 3 actually.
Living the canadain dream 1 taxation at a time . ...
Annnnd. No mention of the why... why wont they just fix the bodrder huh?
There is not a north to south problem at the border, besides, no concession would change this, says trump
Sounds like a no brainer … the gas company just charges the states more for the gas to cover the tariffs .
Tariffs are a fee paid by importers. A 10% tariff on $1 means the *importer* pays $1.10. $1 to the exporter they buy it from, $0.10 to the US government
15% less then 25%, trump a laughing clown to world.
Yet, the world does as told by him.
Energy east would have saved us
We would not be in this situation if Trudeau had not stopped the west coast pipe line, and blocked refining. Now we are stuck.
Refine the oil here. Sell the byproducts of petroleum to Canadians. Cut costs. Find and produce here. Build pipelines east and west. There are solutions. It's not the end of the world.
Thanks Quebec for canceling the pipeline to let Canadian oil go east so you can keep importing from Russia and Saudi.
It's incredible that Tobacco is the only thing completely exempt; I thought that industry was dead.
We should build our own refinery. Be less dependent on the US.
It takes 10 years to build a refinery; more with a Liberals government that demands ki ck ba cks for everything that happens.
Canada should raise the price to match world prices
OR…. Just fix our borders and fentanyl crisis, is all the US asks…… win win.
I thought it was a broad 25% but I guess oil is too important for that much
This is what you get when you put all eggs in one basket lol
Europe has never looked so good ❤❤❤
I have a crazy idea, what if our politicians do their jobs and comply with controlling our own borders instead of throwing an autistic fit over being pressured to do their jobs.
Good! Stop shipping our oil south, and start shipping it east and west to the coasts. We do not need to be dependent on a U.S. market. We need Canadian politicians that actually support the Canadian economy.
And Provinces. Quebec. Talking to you here.
And BC. And the Natives that want and want. But are not willing to do their part to make this country prosperous.
