You don't have to, but it makes it easier. The rear diffuser is screwed/clipped into the bumper at the bottom and along the entire top edge. If you pull the bumper you have access to the clips to remove them easily. If you don't pull the bumper you can work the clips out, but you risk breaking them or the plastic they go into.
