The identify/tasting switch is real. I'll pour something, focus on the flavor and palate and immediately forget what I even poured... it takes me a min or two to remember what I just put in the glass.
I didn't think Old Potrero was discontinued. They have a new bottle and label for the 6 year malted straight rye. That's a SUPER under the radar brand. Their regular 6 year bottle isn't exciting in a world where we have New Riff Malted but their single barrel and store picks of that rye.... WOW. I have an 8 year store pick that is 136 proof. Insanely good stuff and lots of proof to play with water and ice. It's the bottle I would recommend any rye fan seek out but it is VERY limited in distribution. My local shop randomly did a pick and I'm glad. Outside of their pick and the case of regular single barrels they bought to test out I've never seen their casks strength stuff on shelf. I think Old Potrero is based in San Francisco and even just and hour south in Santa Cruz I didn't see Old Potrero anywhere.
Last comment - 13th Colony Double Oak is a problematic bottle for 13th Colony. It's so far an away better than most of their stock and it's their oldest stock. They will have a very hard time keeping up the quality simply because their stocks are going to dwindle as they offer barrel picks and try to keep up some bottles out on shelves. They are a small operation (basically a whiskey club that grew into a business) and they have more hype behind them than they can handle. Reminds me of No Man's Sky for you video game nerds. The game is great, now, but the consumer hype was way beyond anything they wanted and they knew they couldn't deliver. The Double Oak is basically like the reveal trailer for No Man's Sky. It's setting an insane level of hype and consumers have problems understanding that level of release is not sustainable. That kind of whiskey takes time... more time than some BTAC bottles and we know how limited those are (lookin at you GTS and Thomas Handy).
At the end of the day, Fred, this is *your* list, not our list. I'm glad you don't let the backlash steer your choices. (And I say that as someone who is guilty of disagreeing!) Which Old Potrero has been discontinued, though? Hopefully not the new 6yo. I've long assumed all the stuff in the dumpy bottles is old stock at this point but I'm rooting for that 6yo to get some traction. They make fantastic whiskey.
OLD POTRERO RYE has not been discontinued. It did get a new bottle and label design, and the age statement raised from 4.5 to 6 years, with single barrels coming out around 8 and 9 years old. So, still going strong and I have two bottles on my shelf right now.
@@DerrickMarkleymusicI wouldn't say that, it's always a solid contender for the best 100 proofer. You are comparing it to a finished whiskey and one that's considerably stronger. Both are also around twice the cost.
Did you read the top 100 list referenced in the video and linked in the description? 1910 & 1920 didn't make the list. OF 100 did. It won at the Blind Bourbon Louisville at Bourbon & Beyond. Everyone at that competition wanted that bottle.@@DerrickMarkleymusic

Totally agree on the Russells 13yr, 1st batch was one of the best I have ever had, but have passed on a couple of them since then after sampling later batches.
Any list without Fireball doesn’t count! 😂 In all seriousness, always enjoy the list. My list would probably included a Sagamore/OF 1920 but that’s just what I like…my #1 this year is the JD12. Loved it.
I was at the Tulsa tasting, and I was surprised by the Blanton’s win in retrospect….and my ranking that night as well…Blantons, Bradshaw, WT101, and then Maker’s….the Maker’s at #4 wasn’t a surprise.
Great job as always Fred. Surprised not to see Bomberger's on the list... thought this year's was fantastic... baking spice extravaganza. And, for me, the whiskey of the year was the Bardstown Foursquare Collab. Couldn't afford the WTMK Voyage so fell back on the Foursquare as a consolation prize... it's everything a whiskey should be. the rum finish compliments the whiskey without overshadowing it, and the rye in the mashbill seems to take to rum finishing better than high corn (at least the BBC Plantation Collaboration, which to me is so so). Bardstown Foursquare is pretty close to perfection...
I'd love to see how RR13 or RR single barrel would do in the final blind, I know it's not possible to blind them all though. Happy to see Michter's US-01 on there!

It's in his top 100 list. Just no video as yet. When he does the blind tasting video you will get his quick notes and score (if they produce it lile last year). But yes, New Riff kicked the door in making their ASM debut didn't they?
@@javieracosta3439 ahhh thanks for the heads up. Yes they did , I find single malts very one dimensional with one or two notes this had a ton more like a bourbon profile to me.
@@johnwhiskey1152have you tried Westland Garryana? Pacific Northwest oak barrels lead the way but as an annual release, the rest of the cask blend make-up changes year to year. After reading the top 100 list I think it's pretty good. The takeaway for me... holy crap there are a lot of whiskies out there. I own about 50% of the bottles on there but the remaining 50% is a split of like 20% unobtainium (Birthday Bourbon/BTAC type stuff that I haven't landed), 15% bottles not sold in my area, and 15% BRANDS I've never even heard of. I like to consider myself a pretty informed bourbon collector and if there are brands on the list I've never seen or heard of that just tells me how many bottles are flying under the radar. Sure, most brands you've never seen or heard of aren't great - Ben Holladay blew up this year but Switchgrass, another Missouri brand, did not. Why? Switchgrass's whiskey just isn't good yet. It might be eventually but their BIB product is one of the worst bottles I've sampled this year. Switchgrass reminds me of French Lick - they are regional and they are doing tons of stuff but not much of it is actually good yet. French Lick made Fred's list with 1 offering out of the 6 or 8 bottles they produce (they do a bunch of mashbills). That one good bottle could be the start of them becoming the next Ben Holladay. You need demand to get your bottles distributed outside of your local areas.
I don't understand why you feel the need to represent specific categories of whiskey even if they are inferior to WT Generations? Is this list not the top 100? This should not be about equal representation. It should be purely about what is the best whiskey.
