  • A rowing eight needs to prepare for every eventuality, especially racing on the Thames: but in 2012 Oxford and Cambridge were tested more than they could imagine, in the most dramatic Boat Race in modern memory. A swimmer on the racing course, a restart in choppy water, and then the shock of a broken oar blade pushed the Oxford crew to the limit: and in one case, beyond. Interviewed just five days after the race, the crew reflect on the lessons of the season, and its extraordinary closing day.

Cambridge deciding not to take that one… Honor, not opportunism. That's what Univcrsity builds. Best human beings. That's why I fought to attend University

2:05 I've never seen a blade break in person but there was one time in a regatta final one of our doubles caught a crab, his blade got pulled under and splintered. I was amazed it didn't get cut in half. I saw the results of it but not the actual thing. (I was at a different race on the same day)

I will be there next year (cheering for the other team) and I look forward to another hard fought race!
