How Leonardo DiCaprio Forced Hollywood To Take Him Seriously

- Leonardo DiCaprio is by far one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. Though after his initial foray into the Hollywood machine, it seemed the young Leonardo DiCaprio was forever going to be typecast as the teenage heart throb. That is until he made his turn in Scorsese's Gangs of New York. Gangs of New York showed the world that Leonardo DiCaprio was capable of so much more. Leading to roles in The Departed, Django Unchained, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Revenant, and countless other classics.

screenrant.com....
He really avoided being typecast in the boyish charm leading role, and really showed how he was one of the greatest actors to ever live. He's so good in Gangs of New York, but his performance in The Departed is my all-time favorite that really sees him operating on another level.
It was a really good career move to become Scorsese’s new signature actor after Marty’s partnership with De Niro started winding down. Gave Leo the prestige and acting range that he was looking for while giving Marty the commercial success he never really enjoyed before and the ability to make whatever art he wants well into his 70s and 80s. Leo and Marty’s careers turn out very differently if they didn’t hook up when they did.
Went to The Departed in theater, turned to my husband to ask who a certain actor was, as he was slightly familiar looking. “That’s Leonardo DiCaprio” “NO! Really?!? Oh. It is!” And then I started taking him seriously as an actor.
"greatest ever" is a bit much. He's not bad, but I've never been like "Wow, he can act!"
With respect to, wouldn’t say the greatest ever, but he’s a good actor.
It was hard to pay attention to anyone other than DDL in Gangs of New York.
Having nearly zero misses his whole career is a testament to both his talent and his ability to choose the right projects to further his career and his status as maybe the greatest actor of his generation
great actor, businessman, and strategist LOL
I wish more people would talk about his roles in Blood Diamond and Shutter Island. Two of the finest, most overlooked performances of his career.
@@ComedyBros5 Agreed, especially about his Shutter Island performance. I’m not sure about his accent in Blood Diamond and he gave a better performance in The Departed that same year but it’s still a good performance
Pretty sure christian bale once said that that every leading male role in hollywood gets offered to leonardo dicaprio first (obviously exagerration but you get the point). That's why everything he does is good, because he chooses exactly what he does.
@@johnsai4074yeah it annoys me when people list off his movies as a credit to his acting like he doesn’t work with the absolute BEST
I took him seriously when DeNiro said that he was the real deal as a child. He hit a little roadblock after the Beach and the Man in the Iron Mask though but starring in all of those Scorsese films helped. I love this channel as a movie buff.
His pain and terror is so palpable in This Boy's Life. I feel chills when I just think of that scene where DeNiro smears his face with mustard. It's a terror that is fueled by masculine power dynamics, and breeds rage and hopeless empathy for Leo's character. I'm a horror/thriller nut, but that movie is seriously hard for me to rewatch.
@@andrwarrior Well said Ren.
I forgot about man in the iron mask. I vaguely remember that feeling like maybe the beginning of the end for him. I think if he had kept doing roles like that, we'd have never heard of him again. Chris O'Donnell type
@@zachhiggins1668 Exactly, Scorsese might have saved his career.
I was only like 8 when iron mask came out but I enjoyed it lol
He truly shined on Django Unchained. Tricked my mom to watch it because of him. She couldn't recognize him.
Tom Hanks said it best: "He's the finest actor of his generation". His filmography is astonishing and his performances have always been great. A lot of people don't realise how great of an actor he was pre-Titanic as well, just look at his performances in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries and This Boy's Life.
I consider 'Blood Diamond' as his most under appreciated work.
Not only it was a great movie, but acted flawlessly alongside djimon hounsou!
Yes! That's when I started taking him seriously
Always been a huge fan of blood diamond. Just the whole vibe of the movie is outstanding and he fits the role perfectly.
Same. For me Blood Diamond will always be favourite Leonardo DiCaprio of all time.
Way full of grenade launchers
I was a full fledged member of Leo mania and honestly, I have to thank him for introducing him to my love of movies. I'm a movie buff because of my of Leo. I've followed his entire career. It's truly been incredible to watch. I know he did not like his heartthrob status but I'm glad for it. I may have first been captured by his good looks but I remain a fan because of his immense talent.

He followed the Johnny Depp path; people forget or are too young to remember that Depp in the 90's took mostly dramas and Indie movies. He really did try to avoid the romantic lead types.
This man after "Titanic" he could have been easily another guy of cheesy rom-com movies or romantic comedies but no he started working with respected directors like instantly at the beginning of the 2000s like "Scorsese", "Danny Boyle", "Spielberg", "Edward Zwick", "Ridley Scott", "Sam mendes" and more later with "Clint Eastwood", "Tarantino", "Christopher Nolan" & "Alejandro Iñarritu" and always making excellent performances
Rom coms lol... hes gay
But Titanic was a massive epic directed by a respected filmmaker (Cameron). I mean, it won 11 oscars, it wasn’t like other romance movies that caused phenomenons like the notebook (which I also like)
I remember my dad not liking Leo in the 90's for his boy charm and saying he looked too girly but now, my dad makes sure to watch everything he stars in and always talks about how amazing of an actor he is.
I was the same way but greatness is greatness.
Maybe for YOU but I'm sure he still maintains his original views of Leo.
He should have won more awards in his career. He's a generational icon that people will talk about for decades.
So as Washington
One thing that helps Leo is he doesn't try to appear approachable like every movie star does nowadays, singing karaoke on Jimmy Fallon or taking cheap, against-type comedy roles like so many other "serious" actors do. He's never cold and aloof in public, he just doesn't constantly do press or put on some fake, overly friendly act. That helps sell him as a honest-to-God moviestar to the general public. That and trading in 20-year-old supermodels on a yearly basis.
I read somewhere that he learned the value of exclusivity in terms of public exposure but he said it went out the door with Titanic
i mean i would want to be with leo even if we're breaking up after 25 years old
@@caesarn0090t where do you Read that ?
@@thezplayer3002lmao same I would like to be the supermodel he dates and dump me when I turn 26 😂
Same as Denzel too, one of the greats. Tom Hanks I think doing the other “movie star” stuff like doing comedic parts occasionally actually helps his stardom since he started his career and fanbase in 80s comedies
Yes, he certainly did get Hollywood to take him seriously. He’s just the best of his generation and a gift to the world

I think it's really interesting the parallel between Leo's and Kate Winslet's careers. Both have taken deliberate roles and, in Kate's case, some riskier ones. But they both seem to be making the choices themselves and have had amazing careers.
I think he did the right choice by starting to work with well known auteur directors, I feel Robert Pattinson took some inspiration from that move for his post-Twilight career but he decided to work with Indie and Foreign auteurs.
Fantastic breakdown. Leo is truly one of the greats, and his filmography does nothing but further prove this.
I wish more people would talk about his roles in Blood Diamond and Shutter Island. Two of the finest, most overlooked performances of his career.
Love both thosemovies. Blood Diamond and Shutter island and Catch Me if you Can are amazing films with great performances.
He was actually nominated for blood diamond over Departed at the Academy awards

All these movies is awesome...
Total eclipse was decent. Definitely a different kind of role. Not very many people talk about that one.
Leonardo Dicaprio is the most succesful child actor in Hollywood. I don’t think there is any other child actor that has the same amount of longevity within Hollywood like Leo.
My grandmother is friends with Katherine Cortez who played a character in Critters 3 (DiCaprio's debut).
She told me in a conversation about ~2004, that before DiCaprio even stepped foot on set (as a 15 year old boy in his first film) there were whispers of him being a generational talent "you have to see this kid, I've never seen anything like him". Guess they were right.
His versatalituy truly exceptional
A disturbed hero in inception
And mentally disturbed person in shutter island
A greedy billionare in wolf of wall street
A happy going guy in titanic
A ruthless villain in django unchained
He just truly a guy who can do all types of characters
the fact that some of his biggest and most iconic roles weren’t even mentioned in this video shows that he’s truly an iconic actor
A lot of young handsome actors have tried this approach but I can’t think of anyone who’s succeeded like Leo has. I didn’t like Gangs of New York much but have to give him respect for the work he’s done these last 20 yrs.
Pattinson
So, I've learned 2 things from this video:
1.) I have Leonardo DiCaprio to thank for my all time favorite movie
2.) I have (yet another) reason to hate Harvey Weinstein, as if I needed more!
Leo is gay... You blind bat
Why’s your all time favorite movie, Gangs?
Loved him bc of Titanic. But after watching "What's eating Gilbert Grapes?" I was blown away by his acting. Leo deserves an Oscar for that movie ALONE!
Gangs of New York and Catch Me If You Can were the big game changers for him, but personally I think Aviator is still his best performance.
You got it pal. Bingo.
Never understood how both Leo and Kate were teenage Oscar nominees before titanic (Gilbert grape & Sense and sensibility) yet had to prove themselves again with GONY and Iris in order to be taken seriously again as true actors just because they led a blockbuster.
He should have won Oscars for:
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Revolutionary Road
Shutter Island
The Wolf of Wall Street
Everybody hate on "The beach" because wasnt the best performance by Dicaprio or the best movie by Danny Boyle but was actually a really solid great survival adventure flick with great themes, even if the last act when he start going crazy in the jungle was a bit cheesy and forced was still decent in my opinion and the overall ending was satisfying
At the time people were upset that Ewan McGregor was pushed aside for Leo. I think Ewan would have been a better choice. But that’s the way business works.
I was a teenager at the time this movie came out and I liked it very much. In fact I dreamed to go to Thailand eversince. Years later (2018) I travelled there and went to The Beach (Maya Bay beach). The song Porcelain was playing in my head at that moment.
Its cuz he is gay... he was more jelous nit being able to fuck the guy...
@@matrajao awesome story, I personally listen to Pure Shores a lot and it makes me long for my travel days
The shark attack scene is good
Martin Scorsese said recently that Leo's face is cinema. And he couldn't be more right. I couldnt scroll by this video. I saw his faces from these movies in the thumbnail and Leo's face alone brings up these feelings like the nostalgia you get when you listen to songs. So yes...Leo DiCaprio's face is Cinema
Basketball Diaries is so slept on, I never hear many people mention it.
Leonardo DiCaprio Will always be my favorite actor!! I always wondered how hard did he have to fight to prove to the business that he’s more than that kid from titanic. Like when an actor gets stuck forever after being a superhero, I wonder if Leo had to fight to proof himself to not be stuck in the Jack circle forever.
I love how he’s very selective, and he refuses to do blockbuster movies. Leo does not care about the paycheck. He cares about the source material and the direction of the actual story as the content he will provide to the audience for a full experience. I love that he cares about storytelling more than profit. 😇
While I thought he was great in both Gangs of New York and Catch Me If You Can, the moment I realized he was one of the absolute best was when I saw The Aviator.
My friend who has OCD said that The Aviator was one of, if not the most accurate portrayal of OCD that it truly scares the shit outta him
He managed to do something most couldnt, kudos to him.
I love him in his earlier work. Titanic is still one of my favorites. What's Eating Gilbert Grape made it obvious that he was an
*extremely* talented actor.
He was an actor I used to detest, but now I respect. He's long since proven he's a talented actor and not just a pretty face.
My favorite actor of all time...I absolutely love how he captures the screen every time no matter the role
Being Martin Scorsese's Go-To-Guy is a feat in itself
What's Eating Gilbert Grape was the first film imo that showed how great his acting skills are. He completely lost himself in the role of Arnie
I remember reading somewhere that people were surprised that leo wasnt actually disabled after his role in „whats eating gilbert grape“. He played his r 1:08 ole so good that people thought he had to be actually a disabled person. Thats some acting level..
He showed up to the premiere and people were stunned to find out he didn’t have special needs. It might be his best performance, honestly, and at only 18 or 19. Wow
You should do a video on his first Oscar win and why it took so long.
Maybe it is a risk issue.
Same as Pacino and Washington.
@lexkanyima2195 I heard he banged on of the senior academy awards guys wife.
You really ought to look at this narrative a little more critically. Here's the question you should be asking: why don't people take you seriously if you're popular with teen girls? Because that's basically all it comes down to. Leo wasn't any less of an actor when he was a teen heart throb; people just reflexively hate anything that's popular with girls.
"Hollywood heartthrob" roles typically depend more on looks than talent, which is why many people don't take them seriously.
@@Durwood71that’s a dumb take cause I’ve seen a few movies that didn’t do well despite the ‘good looking’ ml.
Teen girls aggressively dont look for talent. Every once in a while they latch onto actual talent. Theyre hit and miss but their constant is looks and trends. There's nothing wrong with that of course.
What are you on about? Are you aware that with this virtue signalling, you actually make women more identify with the victim role? Which leads to entitlement, passiveness, lack of responsibility and trust in their own ability to shape their lifes? Blocks their perception to understand that life challenges you and you have to compete to win because instead, they just find some cozy way into feeling overpowered?
Any actor who builds a strong reputation as a certain type (action star, villain, funny guy, teeny charmer) will be perceived as that character. So they will not be cast for any other roles anymore. As a teeny charm, DiCaprio would have had 10 more years to repeat the same movies and then his carreer would have been over.
Do not look for misogynie; look for and talk about female greatness. It is out there and it will inspire women to be themselves and use their strenghts.
I agree. Brad, Leo, Johnny, Cruise, etc all were teen idols but very talented ones. Brad starred in acclaimed period movies, Leo was an Oscar nominee by 19, Johnny worked with auteurs like Burton & Waters, and Cruise primarily did dramas until this century. They just initially had a fanbase of girls.
Pattinson seems to be going a similar route now but even during Twilight, he did things like Cronenburg’s Cosmopolis
When The Aviator came out, doubters and critics really couldn't stand a chance against him.
*gangs of New York and catch me if you Can
It wasn't till The Aviator was I sold on Leo. He's had some quality rolls as well as collaborating with Scorsese on some great films
Its interesting to see DiCaprio's career and assume it's trajectory after the fact. I never thought of "The Beach" as a film that could have tanked him. I know it's not popular, but I actually like that movie.
Already knew what he was worth in the basketball diaries.
AMAZING actor!! 👍👏🔥🔥
People don’t realise he had to carve out his place against the odds. He made it happen. I still remember how much crap he had to put up with to get do where he is.
I’ll never understand how anyone could’ve disliked the kid. He’d proven he was the real deal at an early age. I’m glad he waded through the noise and built the incredible career he now has.
I agree, Nerdstalgic. Had Leo played "Bateman" then "American Psycho" would've _actually_ been a good movie. 1000%
Please do a video on The Departed!
Leo was destined to be big, was just a matter of when. His performance way back on Growing Pains showed his potential early on
He is one of the greatest or the greatest....
He's one of the best of the last 20 years or so. I like Leo but nowhere near greatest of all time though.
@@LHD2004but he is so whatever
They already took him seriously because he's been making good acting choices since he was in his twenties. After he made What's Eating Gilbert Grape everyone knew that he was talented and was going to make it.
When he was pretty boy Leo in the 90’s he made out with David Thewlis in the 1995 movie Total Eclipse, it was his first on-screen kiss in a movie. He’d come a long way since then, from tonguing Remus Lupin to winning an Oscar for wrestling a bear
His acting was good as a kid too in Gilbert Grape, and Basketball Diaries he played his roles in both movies superbly
leo's acting as artie is seriously insanely good, how does he do it man
1:05 Leo as a kid beat out some serious heavyweights for that Golden Globe.
I used to hate him as a teenager. I first discovered him in Romeo and Juliet then The Man In the Iron Mask and wasn't impressed. I was like ok he's handsome. So what? Then he did Titanic and the girl started swearing by his name, so I hated him even more. I didn't even watch the Titanic. Then, I saw The Beach and I was impressed by his acting. I was like wow he's a good actor. Then, he kept doing great movies like Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Blood Diamond, and I became a fan 😅.
I love hayden christensen but Leo as Anakin would have been dope af to see.
Are you serious dude? Hayden single-handedly ruined the greatest franchise of all time. I've never seen a worse performance on film in my entire life. I've seen 7th grade plays with better acting.
What made me appreciate DeCaprio was actually that OUATIH and Django Unchained in 2019. I realized all too well that this guy can act. Sure these characters he played aren't subtle, but he potrays them with so much emotion, they actually feel believeable
100% agree, i dismissed his films because of the fan girl image but damn 'gangs of new york' turned me into a fan, it's like hey this dude is actually bada$$. he is a great actor and always look forward to him popping up in movies
Leo is a phenomenal actor, he brings his A game to every character he portrays and makes them quite memorable.
Now....
Given what we know now about "The Hollywood Machine" and how long he's been in it, and how handsome he was as a child, teen and Young adult. I wonder how many sexual harassment issues he's had to navigate.
That's what disturbs me. He was in growing pains which was directed by the disgraced paedophile Brian Peck where he's holding on to Leo in a very disturbing way. The sexual harassment in shows was unchecked and much worse then than it is now.
With his looks and youth, going into the industry was like sending a lamb to a pack of wolves. It doesn't help that he was raised by his single mother in the addict, prostitution, crime-ridden corner of Hollywood.
He seems like he's hiding a lot of pain and can't open up about it because he feels like he cant complain after the success he's gotten (through his own hard work) and seem ungrateful. He must have kept it together for so long, that can really be hard to deal with on your own.
Learned a lot from this. Thanks Nerdstalgic
A first knew about Leo through the film called
(The Beach)
Wolf of Wall Street was his best performance ever ❤
Imagine being at a place in life where the important business decision you have to commit to is “do I want to spend the next 5 years working with Spielberg and Scorsese or do I want to be Darth Vader?”
Charlie Sheen wishes he could be Leo.
When I was a kid I was terrible at remembering the names of actors, directors, and even studio names. I did know Leonardo DiCaprio though, he was truly a household name.
This is the story of Timothee Chalamet rn literally
As much flack he gets for his personal life and relationship, you cannot take away his amazing filmography and acting ability. Forever has my respect for that.
fun fact: Tom Hanks was originally up for Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York. Despite really liking the script, he was already committed to both Road to Perdition and Catch Me If You Can, so he had to turn it down
My man was so famous, Nintendo based "Adult Link" in Ocarina of Time on him.
Excellent video DiCaprio is Kobe Bryant to De Niro’s Michael Jordan. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a video about The Aviator that movie isn’t talked about enough
I love how when an actor takes film roles that appeal to women and teenage girls they're, " not a serious actor." However when an actor takes roles that appeal to rich white men suddenly they have, "the chops, the talent, and the guts to be a serious actor."
Well don’t say that the boy equivalent would be a guy who just does action movies not being taken seriously
It's because being a Hollywood heartthrob typically depends more on looks than talent and rarely requires an actor to stretch himself.
Weird assessment making this all about race and gender
Daniel Radcliffe also doing the same path to show that he can act other seriously challenging character more than just a boyish charm. He tries his best to become a Versatile Actor and not become a typecast
I think it's also worth noting that Titanic set him up for life, much like Daniel Radcliffe, they have the luxury to choose prestige projects after the mega payday in their early career, many other young actors don't have that option.
And Leonardo DiCaprio became the greatest actor of all time!
Now I really want to see DiCaprio's take on Anakin Skywalker
I had to pause for a minute and soak in the idea of Leo as Darth Vader... damn.
Leo is a really good actor, it's not his fault he's also handsome.
it’s his fault he’s a pedo tho

A really nice actor, Sir Leonardo Di Caprio. I admire him because of his so respectful image.
You should respect him. He is a great actor, has raised hundreads of millions for charity, donated tens of millions of his own money and nobosy who has ever worked with him has had anything but great things to say about him. Of course the snide comment about his so respectful image is because he dates supermodels in their 20s. Women who also have had nothing but good things to say about him.

Massive respect to Sir Leo for not giving any damn shit about sequels.

No Franchises, No Sequels, No Spandex, No IP bullshit, Just the Truth
Wow. No mention of "The Man on the Iron Mask"? That movie was truly one of the films of all time, apparently. (I actually kinda liked it, though)
To think that he was considered for the role of Anakin in Attack of the Clones is insane! Granted I love Hayden's portrayal of the character, but after hearing this, I wonder what it would've looked like if Leo had accepted the role
Leo is also a huge star wars fan as well so that must have been hard for him to turn down but I can see why as Leo isn't the kind of actor to play the same character more than once especially at that stage of his career he didn't want to get typecasted
Seems like Robert Pattison took a page from Leo on his career path (after Twilight).
As a member of his generation only a few years younger, Leo's pretty boy stardom of the 90's did not convince ME. It wasn't until 2002 I realized he was a better actor than I thought. "Catch me if you can" is one of my favorite movies of all time. After that I began to take him seriously as actor. It was in "The Departed" than Leo transformed into my eyes not only as a great actor but also as pretty damn handsome. I've been a fan girl (well woman) since then.
He would've been awesome as Peter Parker in James Cameron's Spider-Man.
Fun stuff. Back in the late 90s. Some magazines had dream casting article on who would, hypotetically be playing as Peter Parker in a non-existent Spiderman movie, which at that time a Spiderman project was barely on anyone's conversation after failed Batman & Robin flick. It was Leonardo diCaprio name came out. Then Allicia Witt as Mary Jane (google her, and for obvious reason why), since she was also a rising star at that period of time.
