Isn’t it so interesting how for us (historic tarot deck lovers) it is so easy to name our favourite mass-market deck, where most of us are hopeless with our special indie or handmade historic tarots?! 🥰🥰
Ahh, I think I understand what you mean now. The best mass-produced are far and few in-between. But the best of the finest are all so wonderful, they are so hard to choose from. Is that what you meant?
@@MarilynFromTarotClarity probably Artisan? I love the look of that Linen Finish. Unfortunately, I'm not keen enough on their TdM restorations to fork out what they charge, plus postage and customs duty to the UK. A pity.
Hi Marilyn. I just discovered your channel and am loving it! Thank you for presenting these beautiful and classic decks. The authorship in the LWB of the Ancient Italian Tarot, Cartiera Italiana, is the Avondo brothers' company. The Ancient Italian Tarot is their redrawing of the Della Rocca Sopraffino deck, an earlier deck by about 50 years. However, they used different pips in the minors, now just called the Avondo minors vs. the Sopraffino minors. I hadn't seen the new mini Classic deck, but it looks like it is the Sopraffino Tarot. Lo Scarabeo had an Anima Antiqua limited edition of the Sopraffino, which is now out of print, so it's interesting that they basically re-released it as a mini, regular mass market deck.
Hello! Thank you for your further insights. Once I read what you wrote I remembered that you were correct. I just hadn't remembered when I did the video. Unfortunately I am not able to as readily recall things as I once could. There's a lot up in this old noggin. 🤣 I'm glad you liked this video. Thank you for watching! ~ Marilyn
@@MarilynFromTarotClarity LOL! You're preaching to the choir as the saying goes! I've got a few years on you! So I totally understand. I'm a fan and a subscriber.
haha, I have the Classic full-size, but I trimmed the words off and honestly, I've always preferred the coloration on it in comparison to the Ancient Italian
@@MarilynFromTarotClarity it turned out nicely; the backs are uneven, but it doesn't bother me, I like the fronts too much 😁 the illustrations remind me of a couple of playing card decks that once belonged to my great grandpa, which are now in my possession
The full size Classic I bought a few months ago does, indeed, have the multiple language format running down the side. It also has the same backs as the mini classic, and I'm not sure the backs would survive a "borderectomy." (I love that term! Haha 😉) The Italian is one of my favorite mass market decks. The differences in the art between it and the Mini Classic is nearly imperceptible to me, unless I'm literally comparing them side by side, so for me it's perfect for taking along everywhere. It vies for top spot with one of my newer minis I've been using a lot (the mini Visconti Sforza Lo Scarabeo released not too long ago!) I know of Patreon, but have not been on it yet, so can't speak to that, but I'll certainly have to check it out and see what it's all about. Thanks for another great video! ❤
Thank you for the information about the full-sized deck. Lol I wish I could take credit for the word, 'borderectomy.' Thank you for watching! ~ Marilyn
Ohhh, this is very interesting! I have the Il Meneghello Soprafino, and I think it's identical to the new mini deck. This might be heretical to say...but I think I actually prefer the art on the Ancient Italian?! I like how the pips are more decorative, and I like that the Emperor and the Kings look more mature. Thank you for great content, as always! Indeed, I have learned so much from you 😊
I just recently got that Ancient Italian Tarot and in spite of my not being a huge fan of TdM/pips (although I'm becoming more so, thanks to you and one other channel LOL), I really like the Ancient Italian ... and this is perfect timing to find this video of yours now as I adore mini decks and was considering the Classic! Thank you for the comparison Marilyn! I’ve been looking forward to the Classic mini since I saw it was coming out, but I wanted to see the cards up close. I prefer the color palette and the pips of the Classic 😍 The only thing I’m not crazy about are the backs (I prefer pattern backs), but I think im going to go ahead put it on my list of mass market decks to buy this year, along with the mini visconti sforza
I adore the Ancient Italian Tarot, but if I am not mistaken, the trumps and the pips actually come from different decks of roughly the same period. As I understand it, the editors at the time preferred the more ornate pips of the one deck to the original pips that were created with the published trumps. This probably explains why the pips of the two were so noticeably different. The original pips were probably closer in style to the Classic Tarot. No matter to me, of course, the Ancient Italian is one of my go-to decks. And you've gotta love how long Lo Scarabeo has been in business getting decks so close to right, but missing it for me almost every time. I won't get into a long list, but here are some related highlights: five languages on the full-size Classic Tarot and that terrible back design. In the full-size Classic Tarot, they use a double-ended Star image just as they do on the new smaller version, except that in the larger version, they chose a monochromatic sepia-toned image. Having now seen the smaller version, I'm thrilled with the missing languages, but that back design is even more distracting than the original sepia. Just put dots or squares or diamonds or anything but images from the cards on the back of the decks! They have done this so often with their "historical" decks! I'm glad people are excited about it, but I'm becoming a harder and harder sell. (In Lo Scarabeo's defense, they did produce the Visconti di Modrone, which I told my kids has now replaced them as the favorite.) Marilyn, love you content as always!
Hello, thank you! Oh yes, I agree with you about lo Scarabeo getting so close to right and then not. I'm not sure I knew what you mentioned about lo Scarabeo changing the pips of the Ancient Italian Tarot, so thank you for that. That's interesting to know, but I'm with you, I think the Ancient Italian Tarot is beautiful. For me it's just about mass-produced perfection for me. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your insights. I appreciate it. ~ Marilyn
@@MarilynFromTarotClarity they make odd choices sometimes, but they often get it very right too. I know a lot of people dislike key words printed on decks, personally, I'd prefer it if they didn't, but I'm not sure it would completely stop me as I don't hate it. Their LWBs are very hit and miss, but they're rarely much good with most mass market decks and I've seen worse. Where they get it right is that they still print them in Italy rather than China and, although some disagree, I love their card stock for ease of handling.
I don't know why I've only just seen this, but remarkably, I bought this mini-deck last week. I have many thoughts and views on it that I suspect we share. One thing that immediately struck me is that the faces area different in the court cards and people cards.
