How I got an A* in A-level Maths & Further Maths | Revision Tips & Tricks for 2024

- If you are new welcome to the channel. In this video I go through Tricks and Secrets that helped me achieve an A* in both A level Maths and Further Maths.
Just for context I studied Edexcel for both subjects.
The Further Maths modules I took were :

My other a level subjects were Physics and Computer Science. I am now studying electrical and electronic engineering at UCL :)

Honestly on the same page as you. I found uplearn very useful. I recommend using the free trial for it (if you don't have it already) and put vids on 1.25x speed. They explain concepts so well.
Another source which I found very helpful is sciencedoctor.school.blog/ks5/ . They give explanations for a topic and provide Qs on that topic straight after. A lot of Qs here for you to practise!

Thank you for the video, do you have any tips for how to revise for A-Level physics like how you learnt the content and how you go about doing exam questions?
Hi yes! When reading the exam questions look out for the phrasing of the question. The question might include some statements that may help you reveal the method. E.g. “the system is in equilibrium” thus the net force on the system is zero, or “resistivity of the wire = …. “ you’ll know that you have to use the R=pl/A formula
If you haven’t already use your free trial. Uplearn is sick for physics. They are very good at EXPLAINING certain concepts and it goes in great detail. I don’t recommend it for practicing Qs though personally.
For multiple choice questions at the end, get good with dimensional analysis. “Dimensional analysis” is a fancy way of saying check if your units make sense with the formula. E.g. F=ma so the units for Force is (kg)*(m^-1*s^-2)
TH-camrs great for A level physics for me are ZPhysics & science shorts.
Last tip is to sanity check every answer you give. Let’s say you needed to calculate the speed of an electron and your answer was 5.6x10^12m/s you know you’re wrong because nothing is faster than the speed of light (3x10^8m/s)

Yo bro was just wondering what maths vid u would normally use because for me i find it kind of hard to find some because there will be about 8 videos from the same teacher on the same topic which can be over an hr long so not the most productive
I mainly used TLMaths. His videos are very short.
Also Bicen Maths created a couple of videos (e.g. th-cam.com/video/OnZGBQyWK1g/w-d-xo.html) where he goes over the whole entire module in just half an hour. Useful to go through these videos when you have the time to double check you know everything (especially for stats)

I’m currently doing my GCSE’s, I’m a grade 8/9 student and I want to take maths at alevel and this has really helped me, would you recommend doing any pre learning over the summer for alevel?
Great question! I don’t recommend anything until a week before you start. You will learn everything as you go through the content. Enjoy your summer break until then!
If you were to do any pre work or learning work on your algebra skills & manipulation. So factorising, collecting like terms, rearranging eqs. Also work on adding,subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions.
This will mainly be good for calculus, series & trig eqs. You’ll have to work with algebra a lot.

Hi thank you so much I’m glad you enjoyed it! I studied AQA CompSci, however I did have coursework & balancing coursework with my other subjects was pain ngl!
This is a tough question. If I were to give you any advice, try and fit as much coursework time in the weekends as possible. Since during the weekdays after school ur gonna (most likely) be tired or gonna have hwk due the next day. If you work on coursework during weekends you’ll be much more flexible & the quality of ur report will improve.
And try to work out how much time to spend on ur coursework each weekend (depending on how much you have left to complete)

It looks a bit washed up but trust me! The amount of exclusive Qs they have is crazy! I used it for Further Mechanics but I think you can use it for any type of maths (except Decision)

Hi, where are so many topics. How do I revise them efficiently? I got A Level Maths, and AS Further Maths and man there are so many topics. I dont understand how can I cover them all.
I know this sounds generic but the key is to practice as much as possible.
Each Exam Q contains multiple topics if u think about it.
E.g. An Integration Q can combine Algebra (partial Fractions) , Trig, Binomial expansion
Another e.g. A Circle Q can combine Algebra, Trig & Geometry
Final e.g. a logarithmic Q can combine exponentials, algebra(solve for x), calculus
By just practicing 1 Q you are covering multiple topics! It’s like killing 5 birds with one stone 😭
Practice these Qs, go thru walkthrough video solutions on TH-cam (Tip 5) & you’ll cover a lot of topics efficiently

Hi so I got an e in maths Igcse but maths wasn’t the subject I was focused on if I take maths and computer n another subject do u think is there a way I can get a good grade like a+,a I didn’t take Igcse seriously either so if I focus more is their a way for me to get a on all 3 subjects (I’m hoping to become a software engineer)
To answer your question, Yes! There is a way to get at least an A in all of your subjects. With enough, discipline, hard work & smart/effective studying you can get there! It won't be easy though. And before you decide to go through with your decision (with taking on these subjects) , I'd suggest asking yourself if you like maths enough to study it at A level & if you are willing to focus hard enough to achieve great results (which defo is possible).
Tbh, I was predicted a 4 in GCSE Maths (I wasn't focused at all & didn't expect to go uni) & in 3 weeks i changed it to a 9 & became top of the class during A levels. So there's a possibility that if u focused in maths you'd be able to achieve well above an E grade. BUT I'd suggest testing yourself to see if you are capable of answering GCSE math Qs very well.
Test yourself on maths a bit. Focus a bit now, watch a few TH-cam tutorials for maths to test out your full potential (to understand where abouts your grade is if you were to focus now).
It will also help you to believe in your full ability & grow your confidence in maths. I find Maths to be an 'ego' driven subject. After getting a Q right, Id like the subject MORE & be focused on learning MORE content to answer MORE Qs correctly.
Software Engineering isn't the most mathematical degree out of all engineering (not compared to Electrical or Mechanical imo) but it still requires a good foundation for maths.
So do think about if you are willing to take on that next step!

@@KieronAndrews hi honestly maths was the subject I got the least in and I understood where I went wrong during the exam which was that I only did 3-4 paper 4 past papers I also didn’t have the books of any subjects throughout the year n had to miss a few classes which played a big role in it but I also have been doing some questions for a level already before my classes have started n I’ll be getting the books this year I’m planning on making maths more of a hobby to do daily to make it easier and more like-able thank u for the answer:))

@@aaronh1872 tbh with you, there are barely any short a level math videos on TH-cam. Try onlocklerarning on TikTok. He explains concepts so well in each tiktok vid. But I didn't spend too much time watching vids. I only did it if I didn't understand a topic from the lesson. & When I did watch vids i put it on 1.25x speed 😭

Yesss. Textbooks can be very useful for practicing Qs & looking at example Qs!
Do universities care if you did Aqa or edexcel maths a-level or it doesn’t matter? Whats the differences planning to self study online A-level maths
The Uni will accept both & they don’t care abt the exam board.
I haven’t studied AQA but I’ve seen the past papers and they look very similar to Edexcel.
What I will say is that Edexcel is known for being a mathematical exam board & there are a lot of online resources & textbooks that are made specific to Edexcel.

Great Question!
So I brought EVERYTHING! The 3 sets of papers for Maths & Further Maths. I also brought the A/A* Maths Papers. However I don't recommend buying all of them like I did.
If I had to recommend anything , just buy 1 set of Further Maths (they are v similar to actual papers). I found Maths okay and didn't need the extra practice so I ended up wasting a lot of money 😣.
Also the A/A* papers have EXTREMELY challenging Qs! Very good if you want to prepare for an entrance exam of some sort (MAT, PAT, STEP, ENGAA, etc). But I don't recommend otherwise tbh.

@@losttrash980 the amount of past papers to complete depends on how much practice you really need.
I found that I need all the practice that I can get so I completed every past paper for Edexcel from 2018 to 2022 for both maths & FM.
On top of that I only did 1 MME predicted paper - just to make sure my results were consistent!
So to answer your Q, do every single past paper available. This is just my recommendation though.

did you do every textbook question and mixed exercise in the textbook? did you skip any questions and just do questions labelled E/P?
No I didn't do EVERY Question! For each topic I went through 2 or 3 example Qs first and then went through even or odd Qs for each Exercise.
If I was weak in that topic, then I would complete at least 8 of the final Qs in mixed exercise.
@Andrews how did you know when to do even or odd questions and does this apply to further maths too? did you use madasmaths papers during revision?
@@SilverWolf-hz5hm choosing odd & even is all up to you. For me I’d look and see which option is more challenging and practice those but it’s up to you.
I did go through some madasmaths questions but I mainly stuck to A level standard past paper Qs.
Some of the madasmaths Qs goes beyond the scope of A level (I’m using it for uni 😅)

@SilverWolf-hz5hm I'd say completing whole papers arts would be more beneficial in the long run, as they help you get use to timing and question style of papers.

I feel you on this one. Honestly I used the old spec past papers (all the way back to 2001 😭) & just skipped non-examinable Qs

Hi there, I found the predicted papers very useful. In fact a lot more than the normal maths papers!
Are the papers you are talking about I.Y.G.B? Because I remember their Qs being extremely difficult for some of the letters! Don't spend too much time on all of these papers. If you're talking about actual past papers then do at most 1 paper every 2 days I'd say. When studying A levels I worked out how many weeks until my exams and then worked out how many papers I would need to complete each week to practice all papers available.
But space it out! Don't attempt more than 3 papers in one day! That's not effective for a lot of ppl. Generally speaking 2 papers (across all subjects) each day near exam season is very productive in my opinion.
For Decision 1, unfortunately no :( But there are more than enough papers on PMT available that can prepare you for the D1 exam. Practice IAL & old spec past papers. Their past papers are very similar to the modern ones.

@@user-ji4op8xn8i Useful & effective are 2 different things.
It's 100% useful because the papers range in levels of difficulty & the hardest Qs are extremely challenging. Which is a good way to develop problem solving skill. So it is very very useful.
However, by practicing I.Y.G.B papers alone rather than actual past papers won't be an effective way of revision in my opinion. Just because most of the I.Y.G.B paper Qs are not A level standard. It's effective to practice some of these papers, but not ALL since there are way too many! Time is better spent practicing ACTUAL past papers for sure.
I.G.Y.B are really useful for entrance exams to competitive unis though (e.g. MAT, PAT, STEP, ENGAA, etc)
@@KieronAndrews okay thank you for the advice, my oringial revision plan was to try do all the FP1 and FP2 I.Y.G.B papers as i on have 9 left of each , then to move onto old spec papers, then onto new spec papers, is this effective?
If i get a 6 in GCSE and i work really hard, is it likely that i can get an A* in A-Level maths
I’ve seen ppl get As with a grade 7 & ppl get Cs with a grade 9. GCSE grades don’t define your A level grades.
So to answer ur Question. 100% just put in the work and results will show 🙏🏽

Follow all of tip 5.
Any Q you get wrong in the exam paper (e.g. probabilities including algebra) go to the GCSE Maths Tutor channel & find the playlist covering the same topic (probabilities) & watch Grade 7-9 vids on that.
This will be even good to get you a grade 8/9 tbh!

Hi, tbh with you unis don’t really value AS level that much. They’re only okay for ucas points. Even then they’re still pretty rubbish tbh.
I’d say go for the full A level if you can. If not they getting an A is achievable!

How did u split up your revision time between maths and further maths?
Since I studied 4 A-levels, each day I'd study one mathematical subject and a non-mathsy subject (e.g. Maths & Physics on one day, FM & CompSci on the next). I would never study both Maths & FM on the same day.
I'd study 3-4 hours a day (with 15-minute breaks in between). Since I found FM harder than Maths I would study twice as much for FM - meaning 2 hours on FM and 1 hour on Mathematics.

@@or4cl363good question. Realistically for year 12 & 13 I’d have some days off or not work 4 hours everyday (to prevent myself from burning out)
But year 12 I’d still set myself tasks everyday
Year 12 I was set more hwk than year 13 so year 12 I completed hwk mostly & year 13 I was completing exam papers more than year 12

What modules did u do

The thing with further math is that for me at least is not finishing the paper especially for further mechanics
How did you time yours and did you manage to answer all of the questions especially ur exam 2023 ( being one of hardest )
For my final exam I didn’t finish the last Q for Further Mechanics & for one Core Pure paper I missed out 2 full questions 😅
The best way to approach FM papers is to read the Question and if you know you can get at least half of the marks then attempt it, otherwise QUICKLY move on and come back to it later if you have enough time. And if you haven’t got a lot of time (e.g. 4 minutes left for a 12 mark question) try ur best to achieve as many method marks as possible.
So don’t always feel pressured to answer every Q perfectly. Know you can miss 1 or 2 and still achieve an A*.

@@mathonline8787 Not really. After answering each question I checked it on the calculator so I already knew that I was correct for nearly all of the Qs I answered. Plus since everyone was raging on twitter about these exams I already knew the grade boundaries were gonna have to be lowered 😭😭

Math grade boundaries were mad high 55 to 65 (10 marks increase)

Yes! You've got enough time to secure an A in maths. Even though you not feel too confident with Maths I would still recommend completing all the past papers available starting now!
After completing a paper watch a walkthrough video of the same paper (just as explained at tip 5). Then a week later, go through all of the Qs you've gotten wrong on the paper that you've completed (to make sure you've properly learnt from your mistakes).
