Sorry for the poor audio in this video, I used a podcast mic and it doesn't sounds great once processed** (I'll go back to old mic for the next video).
Yes, another great seminar on a lens. I am used to that and grateful for it. But what amazed me this time was to watch you work with your models. Just out on the street you are able to pull good sites/venues with good light and to coax the models to shine. Impressive. You always inspire.
thank you Matt- I had no idea my hood unscrewed to take a filter..... show and tell on our next call...... thank you my friend... always fun to see Toby in your videos- definitely a bad infuence!!
Hey Matt✌ And another perfect video in high gloss,👌 Great pictures but we know that from you👍 At least two thumbs up from me👍👍👍True it looks damn very similar to the Summicton 35. Whether I would buy it, hmmm since I already have some 35s I wouldn't necessarily. Since you mentioned that it is similar to the Nokton Classic 1.4/35 in terms of the image but also sharper. Of course you can judge it if you have it in a comparison, as you have demonstrated. As far as the weaknesses and strengths of this lens are concerned, you have to try it out for yourself. For one or the other certainly interesting even if it is significantly cheaper than an original Leica lens.👌In any case, inspiring content and very much like more. Lg Anderl
Amazing trip to Pilzen and Prague! That little goggled summicron is still my favorite, even if it is almost to sharp for portraits hah, but on film, perfection... tbh that Artizlab lens seemed extremely glowy and soft to me, but only tried it a bit.. Nokton was an eye opener though, nice sharp and contrasty, that would be my choice for the 1.4 as 35mm is more of a walkaround and not an up close and personal see every detail on the face lens anyway :)
Matt, Prague, my favourite city of which I have visited so many times over the years. Great you got to Jan Pazdera and Foto Skoda, two shops I've been to so often and have bought a number of cameras from both. My Leica ii Mod D first batch including lens from 1932 was bought there, it has some great history including a connection to the 310 Czech squadron RAF Duxforth, a Czechoslovakian squadron who fought in the Battle of Britain.
LLL is working on a 35 f1.4 Summilux pre ASPH but has been delayed because the prototypes did not live up to expectations. Keep your eyes open for it when it hits the market. I'll certainly look forward to your opinion.
The prototypes were too sharp and contrasty, opposite of the Summilux? :-) Just kidding... I'm in the camp that believes that 35 Summilux was one of the worst lenses Leica made... the lens always was polarizing, some loved all of its optical deficiencies, some considered them just a poor optical design unpredictably ruining pictures, at least when used at or close to fully open...
I just got a mint Leica silver chrome Summilux-screw mount 50 mm v3 pre-ASPH lens. I’m testing it on a mint Leica iiig I just got and my M11 Monochrom.
Yes correct. LLL are working on the AA copy so slightly different and yes delayed but I’ll keep people updated with the Mrleica.com free newsletter. (I just received their 50 rigid to review).
Nice to see another visit to Prague and to places I frequent often too (Skoda, Pazdera, Leica Gallery). The lens however seems to be a bit more contrasty and less glowy then the 35 Summiluxes I tried when I was looking for the lens (ultimately deciding the unpredictable rendering isn't for me)... maybe yours Summilux is some good example (if the Funleader performs the same). I think the original Nokton 35 1.4 (the one without II suffix) was quite close to Summilux in rendering, but again, a bit more contrasty and sharper, with better flare performance... I'm almost thinking that possibly the Nokton 35 1.4 with micro-scratched front element might be the closest thing to the original :-)
Thank you for testing this exciting lens. I had a SUMMILUX pre-asph but sold it twelve years ago. My bad. (The link to the manufacturer needs to be updated)
I have an original 216 steel rim, the v2 (pre-a)spherical and the 8 element 'cron. So far, surprise, surprise, the steel rim is by far the best of the bunch. You kind of ducked the issue by comparing the Funleader with a v4 cron rather than the original v2 (cause you don't have one, presumably.) The V2 is nice but a bit too soft wide-open, though some people do love that effect. I like the kind of flat pastel rendering on my copy of the 8-element, but Patrick Colpron's description of it as a poor man's steel rim does strike me as about right. The double AA is undoubtedly the best of all but, apparently, those who have both that and the original steel rim, while admitting the aa is the best, use the steel rim much more.

@@Trailsntacos With all due respect, how is the original comment partially true? Leica doesn’t claim to make its own sensors and it would be absurd to think they do. I could also easily see buying newer non-Leica cameras that do things better than my Leicas. That said, I still prefer Leica camera’s simplicity.

Wow I'm impressed how good the model photos look out of cam. I like the low contrast pastel look. And with your editing it looks nice and crisp!

Thanks Odin! The Nokton is sharper and better corrected FYI vs Funleader.
What a nice surprise to meet all those people , must have been brilliant
Yes we met the Czech Leica ambassador who came over to shake my hand too.
is the LLL 35mm 8 element a slighty better overall choice for a character lens (i know the price is different)? thks vm ;)
I think yes. The 35/1,4 is so soft even at 2.0 that I always choose the 8 elements
The 8E is a high performance vintage lens so yes. (Unless you need 1 stop more of light)
For the price, it's pretty phenomenal. Did you happen to notice how performance was at infinity?
Agree! No issue at infinity

Thanks Jim and thanks for sharing! I bought my Contax II there last time.
This lens look much better than I expected. I have owned the 35 steel rim reissued and returned it because the build quality was not so good.
Yikes. Yes the building is stellar for sure.

Foto Skoda (and the other one is on the same road)
What is the strap you're using in this video, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks, in advance!
Glad you ask! I’ll mention in a video soon but see the last newsletter on mrleica.com for more info. (I had it custom made to match my watch)
TTArtisian still feels like a winner especially for the price.
Ah yes I forget that one. I had it in the past. Twice the size but can be good.
Hello Matt
I own a late german Lux 35 v2
Sorry this replica doesn't have the characteristic glow and lacks microcontrast beyond the DOF
Ah thanks for sharing, interesting.
Wow, this lens is sooo much like the V2 Summilux Germany I have.....
Thanks for confirming, yes very similar.

What are the prices for Leica like there.I think the softness is def usable for people.

I’ll stick with my Nokton Classic ii
Yes if you have that already, great.
Finally a lens that doesn’t give me GAS. 😂
Haha great. I’ll try to do more in 2025
I would get the CV 35/1.2 II or III and call it a day for just a few hundred bucks more than the Funleader version....
Great lens but very different. I have the 1.2 II. Great for portraits but I'm not going to walk round with it all day. It's a lump!
