- Slauson Malone has been creating button pushing hip-hop for over 8 years now. But out of all of his work, his "Crater Speak" projects stand out the most. So...what is Crater Speak?

I DO NOT OWN THE RIGHT TO ANY MUSIC USED IN THIS VIDE. DUH.
You say you‘ll describe “nothing” but there were many “things” in this video.
deceiving your audience… shame.
What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be trash talking Fantano fans or something?
great video, I have been obsessed with slauson’s work over the past couple of months and he has to be one of the most talented artists rn
for real man same here he's amazing
i need the scans of the book
thank you bro
Loved this video! and I'm a huge fan of Malone's work. So much so, that I wrote a 20-page essay on 'crater speak' for my final project in school. In that essay I focused a lot on the sounds of the albums, and I think another really interesting part (besides the stuff you've mentioned, that I actually didn't even realize) of this album is the way he uses his sound, and sampling in particular, to emphasize a lot of the themes on the record. I specifically analyzed the 'Smile'-motive, where he often compares memories to drugs, and has subtle critiques of nostalgia. I think his criticism of nostalgia shines through a lot in the way he uses samples in 'A Quiet Farwell', where he creates this dark, cloudy and sometimes really scary offputting instrumentals, that reflect a dark image of the past. This paired with the 'siren'-motive, that as you mentioned symbolizes black death, creates this environment where trauma and nostalgia become hard to separate.
So when he is looking back at the past in 'vergangenheitsbewähltigung' (which even Jasper mispronounces), he is realizing how dark the past really is. Both his own, but also the collective past (especially for black americans). This can especially be seen on 'smile 6'. He looks at his past, and a void is staring back.
amazing perspective. Im interested of the essay where do you think you can send it to me ?
@@marztbe9118 It's in danish, so I have to translate it beforehand. Maybe, if I get the time.
@@frederiksrensen6116 appreciate it so much thank u bro😎🤝
any updates on the translation?? 👀
I would love this essay as well!
The physical copies of the Crater Speak book were available during his tour with Injury Reserve, I have a signed copy that makes the album experience feel a bit more complete, truly a unique multimedia investigation into blackness, presence, and absence
i’m so happy that someone has finally talked abt him i’ve loved his work for a while now and love this video
Amazing video about an underrated producer, but can we appreciate the shirt that has a Joy Division shirt on the shirt. That is art. In a very Warhol commentary on consumerism kind of way.
Haha, shoutout to Kes Decay for designing the shirt!
Lol biggest inside joke is everyone asks for “spare copy” of the book as if someone ever thought of copping more than one 😭😭
joy division shirt shirt
I’ve cried to multiple of his songs on multiple occasions🔥🔥🔥
amazing video man, ill definitely have to check his projects out now. ive wanted to for a while but never really knew what to expect.
my only experience with his work up to this point are when he opened for injury reserve a few months ago as "slauson malone 1" and it was one of the craziest live shows ive ever seen
As a matter of fact we listened to it for a Patreon LP if you were curious on all of our thoughts on the record
Happy to see a video about this masterpiece 💯
Anyway I could get access to those scans of crater speak? Been looking for a while
could you or your friend maybe put crater speak book on the internet archive?
I feel there was alot more to divulge on, especially as far as A Quiet Farwell and his disbelief in the past being a place. "The sun don't set, it just go away". Or Ssmmiillee ##55 being Smile #5, just very strategically elongated.
But I think once you actually get your hands on the book, it'll make more sense
MAN THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU great deep dive on Slauson Malone
I have searched high and low for a digital scan of the Crater Speak book, if anyone has any leads or knows where to find it I would truly love that. All I have been able to find so far are a few excerpts.
i know i'm pretty late, but this is one of the best youtube vidoes i have ever seen. i found slauson malone at around the same time that you did and he has easily become one of my favorite artists. his unique sound and the messages that are in his work is truly beautiful. it isn't just music, it is a work of art.
me when watching new Jackson video: good job Jackson that was a really good video
cant wait to listen to these projects now
W vid
i really needed this
One of my favorite albums of all time, covered by one of my favorite TH-camrs. Is it my birthday or something
Great dive into Slauson Malone's work. I first listened to Slauson Malone years ago but for some reason I've become hooked on Vergangenheitsbewältigung after revisiting it recently. It reminds me so much of Hymie's Basement's self-titled album. Both are hip-hop adjacent, surreal, and dream-like. And both have a kind of sublimated sense of dread. I wonder if anyone else would agree.
(+ they both sound best when you're driving around at 3am)
an absence present
By 0:35 you had me I love this vid
god that first shot is amazing
Man this comment seriously made my day. Thank you, I appreciate that a ton.

“Celebrate sorrow, till I can’t tomorrow. Just time borrowed, just time borrowed.”
Great video
Thank you for covering this I have been waiting for a explanation on this bizarre genre of music for a long time
I'm so glad you did this video. Slauson Malone definitely grasped my attention not too long ago. I love his music
This is the best video or any sort of commentary I’ve seen someone make on slauson Malone

such a sick video
Amazing video!!!

You say the themes are "Tricky to describe from someone with a privileged perspective".
But the individual who wrote/created this project grew up with 2 famous parents in Hollywood. A family with generational ties to the music industry.
So how are you more privileged than him?
This album deals a lot with trauma, that is very bound to being black, like watching people like you, shot dead on the TV everyday. It is a privilege to not deal with the things, this album deals with.
white.
I am sueing
Also nice vid bozo
