The story is based on the closing of the New York Sun, founded by Benjamin Day, in 1950. The Sun was sold to the Scripps Howard chain and absorbed into the "World-Telegram."

Originally titled 'The Newspaper Story', location shooting took place both in the newsroom and the printing plant of The New York Daily News, with real pressmen playing themselves. This was augmented by an 'almost letter-perfect' reproduction of a newsroom on a Hollywood soundstage.
During the first day of shooting, star Humphrey Bogart admitted to friend and writer/director Richard Brooks that he had been drinking until late in the morning, and had not learned his lines. Earlier in the day, while he had been difficult on the set and resistant to saying his lines (ones he never knew) veteran Ethel Barrymore pushed him to just get on with it, by explaining that 'The Swiss have no navy'. In other words, like actors, they are powerless.
James Dean appears in a tiny non-speaking role in the film as a press boy.
In order to get the feel of what it would be like to work for real newspaper, Bogart hung out at the city room of the New York Daily News.

Ethel Barrymore sure was busy in the 50s. Brightened every movie she was in. Classy legend.loved her voice!

Thank you for that, there were some bold eds, yes certainly existed, equally, I also worked with a few scaredy cats over the years who would put anything contentious on the obits pages, or spike them, because they cared more about pensions than passions, even though their lives were not on the line, good old Boogie eh!

Just like a good bottle of wine better as time goes on. Damn good acting just damn good acting. Give Bogie any role. Kim Hunter just as good an actress as Bogie an actor in this movie. Classic!!

Even with a faulty picture it is still a great film. They just don't write scripts like that anymore. Bogey and Ethel Barrymore have outstanding screen presence. Direction, cinematography and editing sharp and pacey.

Very realistic scenes on the editorial floor. And in the composing room. That's how papers were until computers started replacing typewriters in the late 1970s. I worked in papers for about 30 years before crossing over to television but those years in papers were fantastic. And this film captures that. Another film with realistic workings of a newspaper was Teacher's Pet with Clark Gable. Forget the romance angle, but the rest was authentic.

Well I don't know if they meant you to get the reference but I was quoting one of Bogart's ending lines to Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca where he said ''We'll always have Paris. We lost it for a while but we got it back.''

+The Old Chron I looked up the writers and they were different Richard Brooks wrote and directed Deadline and Michael Curtiz directed Casablanca which had lots of writers. I feel Casablanca was more than a romantic suspense story. It was a criticism about the U.S isolationist policy at the beginning of the war that eventually stopped when they joined in the fight as per Rick's character.

It is an irony that newspaper business should be subject to the rules of market. Rather it is sad that newspaper should be a 'business' at all. This movie brings out that fact clearly. Thanks YT and Old Chron.
I was informed by one editor that the key aim of a newspaper was the make money, it was one of those clever richard answers he told new recruits who thought it was to champion the cause of free speech; we must have made a bomb back in the day when everyone bought the Old Chron, I recall a newsroom packed with 20 journos and editorial assistants and a darkroom with five snappers plus an archivist cuttings lady ah, the good old days, when you could pick up a new edition, literally hot off the press . . .

How very perceptive of you M, I suppose you have the link the words Investigative Reporter - but today, with huge cut backs in staffing as newsroom get smaller and smaller, and many work from home, its a wonder any news is true. I didnt have the time back in the good old days with plenty of badly paid hacks, so what we did was putting both sides to the same story. That is why we have a strong democratic parliamentary system where the ruling part is held to account and the opposition is not persecuted, put in prison on bumped off - apart from cabinet sackings!

I used to love that show, thank you for this pointer. Gabel really captured in a few minutes the charm of evil and why corruption is so seductive.

Fantastic film ... many thx for posting ... I'm old enough to have parents who worked for the old press (at rival newspapers!) ... there really was a bottle in every desk, & the news rooms were full of these kinds of flawed knights-errant. Very cool film.
Yes, it's a fantastic film they don't do these days - I mean how exciting does social media get! It was every other desk where I worked, hopeless alcoholics - and that was just the women - who died young, but we are all flawed in some way or another. Lovely to hear about your parent's rivalry, I do hope they told you enough to write a jolly good family history of it all, newspapers, for the most part, will soon as redundant town criers, oyez, but I had the best 40+ years with an interesting job that suited my crazy personality, always different, sometimes scary, but never boring, and, as my editor would remark when I complained about the low pay - its a fun job!

Never seen this before, and slightly embarrassed (I've worked at newspapers and news websites most of my life). Really good movie, with several interwoven storylines that all hold together. One of Bogart's best.

Really pleased you enjoyed it, even if no journalists have ever existed as great as Bogie's character, this is what we should ALL strive to become - fearless proclaimers for truth and justice and as free from corruption as possible in a fallen world that seeks to compromise and then neutralise all who try to turn the spotlight on darkness.

Sadly, you are right. Little did we realise that when our typewriters were skipped and replaced with Apple Mac SEs - the type featured in a second hand or pawn shop in Back To The Future - that it was the beginning of the end for Caxton. Just as illuminated manuscript scribes and town criers were replaced by newspapers as literacy increased so too will social media sweep newspapers into the dustbin of history, as a snapper colleague of mine remarked, journalism courses in the UK are about as useful as coal mining apprenticeships.

I do have my own videos of voice impressions, but Bogart is one I very rarely do. Also, I don't really sound like him. However, I'm very good at impersonating Walter Brennan's voice!!!.

When I was a kid, the word went around that because this put Journalism in a bad light, the in print reviews panned this picture, resulting in significant lower box office. I wonder to this day if this was true.

Seems to me it put it in a very good light. A beacon of truth, run by heroes of incorruptible integrity.
I knew I saw this one, glad I saw it again. Memory might have been gone, but very few truly know the Greatness of Newsapers from the 1800's. They kept records of an Evangelist whose teachings touched 100's thousands of lives. One Man went to every town searching for those records, and found them, one at a time! The Historical record of events recorded were of great importance, if to one man, then to many. It's sad to think must of everything he found was swept away. Just like many great Newspapers. The English Language was butchered through the years, till 5th grade level predominates society.

Gordon Olson built farm tractors from before or during WW1 till after WW 2. He became a world traveler Teacher of the word of God. I have a friend who has the Original books written by Charles Finney , taken from Oberlan College where they hid them after Finney Died. It then became a Baptist college then Liberal arts college.

Although this film came out in 1952 so many of its precepts are relevant today. Perhaps even more so. Today we are witnessing the effects of nearly sixty years of social upheaval brought upon by an increasingly self centered and corrupt government where the people we have elected to represent us are far more interested in acquiring more wealth, power and control over our society than ever could be thought possible. These same individuals are aided in their endeavors by news organizations largely owned by conglomerates rather than small individual corporations as in the past. No longer are they interested in the news but rather serve as collective propaganda centers that dispense the same material throughout their spheres of influence. The news itself is no longer important. Rather they clothe their propaganda that will reinforce their agenda as news and dispense that as news, ignoring the news that does not fit their agenda

Great actors in this one. Quite an assembly of great character actors and not possible today to find such a group. Recognize some of the faces? They were not in the credits. Jim Backus and Dabs Greer just to name a few. Wonderful movie and it is frequently shown, which shows it is not forgotten

Every NEWS organization should take a look at this flick and take a PAGE from ''The Day''! Nothing can substitute for TRUTH...even an h'alternative' TRUTH is still a LIE! This movie is most relevant now here in the 21st century, 2017, than when it was produced in 1952. Good job!

Yes it is - it is what we expect of the press, in my experience local newspapers are a lot more down to earth, caring, honest and help more than the gutter rats lurking in the Streets of Shame, but human nature being drawn towards the dark side its a wonder anywhere in the world is perfect.

I find it interesting to note that the most famous or infamous historical figure to ask What is Truth was not Jesus Christ, of whom it was asked, but Pontious Pilate, the Roman Governor, after the Jewish Messiah mentioned the word truth. There is no record of what answer Jesus gave, which is even more interesting, so to speak.

Knowing ASC Kramer was cinematographer to at least 165 films, many my favorites, 1933-1970, I hope I don't run into another with that rapid drag and drop technique.
We live in hope LL, when all the ills of the world had escaped from Pandora's Box, it was the only thing that was left, but it is more powerful that the gates of hell.

I just slowed the film down to 0.5 in hopes of catching James Dean in his cameo. It's funny as hell! I didn't catch Dean, but old Humphrey sounds like he's got one hell of a buzz on! It looks like one drunken party at the pressroom!
I've never seen a drunken party in a newsroom, and I never tell lies either!
Turning this movie off after watching for an hour and a half is like stepping on land after a long sea voyage. My eyes are still rolling, but the room is not.

I totally agree, but I really hate the black strips on each of a 4x3 format, it is a debilitating syndrome known as Fourbythreeitis and can lead to munching popcorn madness. Good news is that conversely neanderthals also suffer the same when watching 4x3 format that has been turned into cinemascope, known as Fakewidescreenitis, you see, they just can't get their head around it.

Jesus had just finished a speech at the temple where He delineated differences between Himself and His listeners. “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins” (John 8:23-24). The result of Jesus’ message was that “even as he spoke, many believed in him” (verse 30). Then, in verse 31, Jesus begins to speak just to those who had believed.
“Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples’” (John 8:31). True discipleship is more than intellectual assent; those who are “really” followers of Christ will “hold to” His Word. That means they will not only accept His teachings as truth, but they will also obey His teachings. Action is proof of faith (cf. James 2:17).
True disciples of Jesus believe that He speaks the truth about God and the Scriptures. They also know that He is who He claims to be. Back in verse 25, the people asked Jesus who He was, and He responded, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning.” There may be a tinge of exasperation in His response; He had repeatedly made known that He was the Messiah, the one they had anticipated for many years.
Verse 32 begins with, “Then you will know the truth.” “You” refers to those who are true disciples of Jesus. True disciples will know the truth. More than that, their eyes are opened to a greater understanding of the truth (cf. 1 John 5:20).www.gotquestions.org/the-truth-will-set-you-free.html

This is in the wrong ratio. It should be in 4:3 (Academy ratio on 35mm film) so as a result it is cutting off the top and bottom of the frame. Awful!
I have looked at your YT channel but I can only see this exciting announcement: 'This channel doesn't have any content' So John please consider sorting out a 4:3 ratio footage and upload it, hopefully you too will attract hundreds of thousands of viewers. I love this movie. After spending roughly two decades in print journalism, I can attest to how people felt about the business, as we saw in "the wake" scene. Considering that this film was produced by 20th Century Fox and is probably in the Fox film archives, I wonder if Fox's current owner, Rupert Murdoch, has ever seen it or not. In one of the opening scenes, Bogey is cynical about the paper which is buying his paper. The buying paper is very much a yellow rag similar to the kind of rag Murdoch publishes in New York and London.

The one part of the storyline that I didn't like was how quickly The Day was going to new ownership (two days after the teletype announcement or the very day after the judge's decision. At the very minimum it should have been 1 to 4 weeks which that would be mandatory today.

The negative comments from a wussie with multiple aliases and/or his gang of wuss had no impact on my viewing this movie whatsoever. Except for some minor cropping of the titles that didn't matter, the picture and sound quality were excellent.

The part of him riding in Rienzi's car. He's not afraid of the gangster in the least. Newspapers were good in those days. There will always be some sensationalism no matter what paper it is. And never piss off the editor either. In Arizona that happened in 1987 betwee the paper and the governor and the governor ended up being thrown out of office the following year. There was simply too much dirt to dig up.
I used to service those old Typewriters long ago, and IF you had seen all the crumpled sheets thrown on the floor, where a Reporter trying to keep a deadline started his new Heading so as to be more aggressive; you would appreciate your Internet a little more!!
I learned journalism on Remingtons, did you service them, wish I had kept mine when they chucked em all in the skip of history. Ah yes, thats where the term 'copy' comes from. . . a sheet of carbon paper was placed between two same size squarish sheets of unlined paper and placed on the typewriter roller where stories were written, often a smokey cigarette would be held to the top of the typewriter by a bent paper clip, something straight out of Kirk Douglas' Ace in the Hole classic cult hack movie.The top copy was placed in the copy tray beside the sub editors, while the bottom copy, which carried the imprint created by the carbon paper, and known as a 'black' was kept by reporter. The top copy was crisp and clear, but the 'black' was smudgy.A sub-editor would then read the top copy, correcting, re-writing by hand if necessary and then place it on a dummy sheet, representing a newspaper page. If there was any dispute about who made an error, once the paper was published, the news editor would go to the reporter's desk and find the 'black' on the spike (a deadly looking spike of metal like a metal coat hanger about six inches long, where the copy was secured) and see if the mistake was the responsibility of the reporter or the sub. I well recall one deputy editor desperate for stories, shouting "Just produce the copy" to us young hacks when he noticed we were taking it easy, papers never paid well, as my favourite editor used to remark when we went cap in hand, pushing at an open door. . . "But it's a fun job!"

The Reporter wrote the (his) first draft and either used a shoot or a copy boy to get the Report to a Copywriter on the floor above, depending on its urgency of late news. The Reporter used any old scrap he had on his desk. I didn't get much further than the Reporters Room. myself.

When I was a trainee journalist I sat a law exam, vital to gaining my NCTJ certificate. The exam invigilator left the room after five minutes to ourselves for 30 mins and everyone cheated using their law books. I could not believe my eyes; here was tomorrow's journalists, about 30 of them, all looked like they were cribbing off the law guide book. Those guys who would be fighting corruption and upholding the truth passed the law exam., I was so proud that I failed, so how did I qualify and gain my NCTJ to get a job?

Good film but I wouldn`t describe this as a classic. I think Humphrey Bogart`s heydays and his greatest films were made during the 1930s and the 1940s. Not able to explain why but somehow the energy seemed to run out of Bogart`s films once he entered the 1950s. One of his last films, The Desperate Hours, made in 1955 was very good, but it was lacking the old form character of Bogart. I think the same applied with many of the gangster type American actors of those times, including, James Cagney and Edward G Robinson.
I think the reason why so many love this particular movie is that the storyline is so strong, and good triumphs over evil, we want super heroes in the editor's chair, to tell the truth, and nail fake news; my fav quote is of course, a reporter writes stories, but a journalist makes himself the hero of the story! Yay, that's what I have always tried to achieve, in my own modest way, of course. Having now retired, I miss the buzz of the newsroom, so I just love the interplay between the guys in the newsroom, hearing them exchange views and joke with each other. Of course, since the advent of computers, most newsrooms became 'No talking' museums/libraries with everyone silent running, pretending to work 24/7 while exchanging secret emails and texts. Thanks Bugart for taking the time to explain your reason for writing, God Bless.

Yea I’ve noticed that too about all 3 Actors being Robinson, Cagney & Bogart. I think the “Hollywood Red Scare” is what had a lot to do with their fading. In the late 40’s & early 50’s with the looming “Cold War” presenting itself, Communism was infiltrating the Golden Era of Hollywood. Many Actors/Actresses & Directors, Producers, Writers & Agents were being accused of either being branded a Communist or labeled “Commie Sympathizers” if they defended a fellow Friend/Actor who was being accused of Communism. This was massive and Hollywood went to the high courts where a lot of friendships were broken, Careers ruined & partnerships tainted.
Congress handled the situation very poorly, accusing Actors of Communism with little to no evidence and with no future apologies from Congress to the wrongfully accused. Some Agents & Actors were even “Black Listed” meaning they would be barred from Employment while living in the U.S., some temporarily Black Listed & some even permanently. The whole thing was a fiasco with Congress wielding little to no success of making any dent against Communism. The only thing this “Red Witch Hunt” succeeded in doing was ushering out The Golden Era Of Hollywood. Sad as Hell.
Edward G. Robinson was one of the few A+ Actors accused of being a Communist and many Actors/Actresses/Directors came to Robinson’s side to defend their good friend. A few of those who came to Robinson’s side was Celebrities Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, James Cagney & Directors Fritz Lang & John Huston. Ever since that event, to this day Hollywood & Congress have not fared well with each other. The only difference in “New” Hollywood and “Classic” Hollywood is that back in the old days Actors & Celebrities weren’t Bat-Shit Crazy & Pretentious like today’s.

Love it, thats one of the best part of blockbusters, as an unsung video producer of 2,000 TH-cam videos I rejoice that even the Hollywood pros are far from perfect, for perfect people are so up themselves, I prefer heroic failures like me.
Truly an American Classic = Prime Bogie in a more "serious" role = engaging script / poignant dialogue. A 'pipe dream' scenario? Compared to the daunting corporate consolidation of American Press Corp sources of today, DEFINITELY A Pipe Dream..... and ever-increasingly so!!! :-o
