- Today@WorkingHorsesWithJim, I take my Percherons Buck and Ken to the woods today, and talk a little about how old horses can be and still work.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I am in awe of Jim's knowledge and his wonderful horses. It's a privilege to be able to see how our world as we know it was shaped by these noble creatures. Jim is extraordinarily calm and caring for his animals. Hats Off! Wonderful!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed
The gauge is not the age it is the youth that remains at the end of the reins and long may they reign!
I'm 63 and could drive a team skidding before I could ride a bike. Anyone that still logs with horses is #1 in my book.
That's great man! I have never done team skidding or horse logging but I did watch a buddy. I drove log truck and most types of logging equipment except processor in Wisconsin and Michigan. I have a residential tree removal service now. I'm also an avid bike rider. When did you learn to ride a bike?
Love watching good horses work!
I have a 24 yo Belgian mare that like to work. She has arthritis in her neck so I pick implements with a lighter weight pole. We lost other Belgians by 17-18 so we just take it as it goes. I often work 3 abreast to lighten the load and now have her as the extra one not on the pole. She calms down the other horses and makes them work better so even old she is worth her weight in gold.
My perchxquarter mare was 32 when I lost her😔she was a wonderful horse. to grow up with! Had her since I was 3 and my grandpa broke her for me! Miss her so much!!!♥️🙋♀️‼️☮️
Working with horses is paradise on earth
So nice to see this for Christmas Week. Old horses are treasures-Thank You!🌹
I showed horses for many years but never knew anything about working horses Very interesting !! Thx
Thanks for watching.
Another great video. I remember when I was quite young, before school days, going with my dad, my uncle and grandpa, to Mo River bottoms in Mo. They would cut giant Cottonwood logs. Then pull them out with horses. Build a fire for me, to keep warm. Fried bologna for lunch
Great memories.
Sounds like it! Thanks for watching!
Beauty, strength, skill, work ethic, conservation, love, faith, friendliness, humility, integrity...... This channel has it all!! The world would be a better place with more people like this.......
Wow so buck was born when i graduated high school feels like not that long ago hope im beliver woking him keeps him going you have amazing anamals great fotage excellent footage being out on your own filming and loging
What I like about your videos is that you just don't do things, you figure out why do a thing this way, or another way, This ends up doing things for a reason, I humbly see it as having a bank of purposes based on reflection. I'm retired, I like, in the morning, take my coffee listening when you explain things.
logging is like picking up pixie sticks (the game), if you don't pull the right ones out first you just have a big mess.
Thanks you remind me of my Grandfather and Uncle, good memories! Enjoyed!
I do not understand where the thumbs down come from. Jim treats his horses very well, doesn't overwork them and has a very good farm operation.
animal rights people, the same ones who wear leather shoes, set on leather chairs. and hide out at OTB..
Thanks Klaus
Maybe people who don't like seeing trees cut down or don't like horses? Or perhaps idiots...? ha ha
@@olddave4833 While I do believe that animal rights people do a lot of good for many animals, it is also true that some of them overshoot the mark, often out of ignorance. As farmers and horsemen we should try to educate them, but also utilize their efforts for our purposes.
thumbs down are people with touchscreens and artritis. Stop hating on them
My Father had a Percheron/Morgan cross that did light work until he was 24 years old.
That’s impressive!
strawville cabin is dead bang on, thanks and Merry Christmas to you all as well. We are located about 250 miles north of your place.
Merry Christmas from down south ;)
I would say as a older man that this kind of work was before many of us were born and it is great to see that
someone is still showing use how it was done many year before motor powered machines came in to our time.
Thank you for taking the time to show all who is interested in what you do.
Glad some people are interested in watching. Thanks for your support!
Thanks for the shot of you sharpening the chain with the file. I always impressed how sharp your chains are when cutting!
I love your practical approach Jim! Thx so much for sharing your experience and life. I for one am thankful.
Thanks for watching Zach
your horses mind better then most people do.
really like logging videos, that husky saw is nice
Thanks
Buck seems to have lost a little bit of that classic Percheron "high step", but that often happens in the early to mid 20's. He sure has a lot of heart thought. Thanks for another great video, and Happy Holidays to you and your family. God bless.
Merry Christmas to you as well! And God bless!
We just love all your videos, you have a beautiful family, you must be very proud. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Thanks so much! And thanks for watching!
Think horse's love to work, and when you take that away it is worst. Good luck Jim love to see guys of our age (60ish) still working hard!!!!
Thanks, thanks for watching!
You provide a chance for people to see things they would never be able to see. I greatly appreciate the videos.
And I thought backing a trailer behind my truck was difficult!
Jim, I have found channels like yours to be of great comfort to me always, but especially this year!
I just appreciate you sharing your knowledge & life/horse experience with all of us!🙏🏼🎄
Thanks for watchig
Produce day, the three of you did a good days work. Nice to watch experience in action.
Thanks!
a humble talented calm man of the woods with his well trained horses -
doing an honest days hard work in the tranquil quite woods - all done with few subdued commands -
like a perfectly harmonized dance - my hat off - pleasure to watch how it`s still done some places 😘😘😘😘
Thanks, you’re too kind
Love your videos...Please just keep letting him work like you are doing....and give him a challenge regularly....He is just like you and me.. He would rather die in the harness than out to pasture.
Agreed, the work is what keeps him going and in good shape. Just like all of us, like you said
Merry Christmas to your entire Family ! I know all of us would like a video of your Christmas day.
I was logging the same half day as you but hardwood. It was pleasant afternoon and we have the same amount of snow as you. We live in Quebec. Good logging and I love your channel. I’m looking for a mill as well. Take care in the bush tomorrow !
You as well, stay safe! Thanks for watching.
Wow Jim, you made the tree fall in between the other two trees as you predicted !
Hello I live in south east ky. We farm and log with our horses. I watch your videos about every night. I really enjoy watching your videos even though I use mine of the day I watch you at night. You have made me try and start my own TH-cam channel. Keep up the great work.
Glad you’re enjoying the videos, keep up with your videos!
Looks like you have a lot of willing workers to help! It’s great that you’re showing the next generation!
Your horses are really obeyed, nice!
Thanks! 😊
Younger generation should watch this and learn something valuable like I did very young with friends thanks Jim for video and merry Christmas all the way from haileybury Ontario Canada
Thanks merry Christmas to you as well. Thanks for watching!
Great work ! Such skills !,Proud that there are guys like you out there .
Thanks
Thanks for the show, used the big ones in the bay fields and feeding in wyoming during the 60s.
That’s interesting! Point thanks for watching!
The working age of horses can be as different as that of people, some last longer, some have to stop earlier. In 2015 I had to put down a Belgian at the age of 32, since he couldn't chew and digest any hay any more which is the way they create body heat in winter. He worked regularly in the field till he was 28. Other horses I had gave out in their late teens. Presently my Percherons are 13 and 18 and they do everything we have to do on the farm. Of course, with an older horse you want to practice moderation, that's by the way, what my wife exhorts me to observe, too, since am older guy.
😀
Looks like heavy work for an old team . . . but the ground is frozen and not as much sap in the logs. Nice looking timber. Cheers.
when the video started it looked like they knew you were talking about them and showing off a little for the camera and man yall can turn and back that rigg up better than i can my truck lol good to see buck still gettin the job done he is afine old fella for sure yall take care now and merry christmas to the whole family....
Thanks for watching! And very Christmas you and your family as well
Clearly, you have a very personal relationship with each of your horses. As you mentioned, we all have a lifespan, useful or retired. Please let us know how you deal with the final days of such horses. The emotional aspects are something most of us can relate to with our pets. We memorialize them. It's devastating. With sincere respect, I am interested in how you and your mentors manage a final resting place for these beautiful work horses. Most of us are in awe of your life and skills, then there are the amazing horses. Many of us want to know more.
People don't realize how gentle you are with them. They are also very gentle around you. No one wants to get hurt, even they recognize that. You are very concerned with them all the time. Horses are a lot like us, as they get older we tend to move a little slower and more careful. Yes they do love to work, they know it's good for themselves.
Thanks, you’re right
Ya, I like monsieur Jim's pace.
Buck acts like he's 20yrs young lol. you and your family have a merry Christmas
And you as well! Thank you.
Wonderful, I am glad I found your channel today. You have a deft hand with your steeds, they respond just right. If I'm not mistaken they back, turn and other moves with few words.
Thanks for watching!
Good day Wel it brings back memories of when dad done it. I think blacks aren't quite as fast, boy the chestnuts on 1 video just torn into it. Thanks
Fascinating. You work very well yourself, never mind the pleasure of watching your horses. I like how you use voice commands.I will watch this again with hubby tomorrow. So amazing. Thankyou.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
I was felling and bucking trees the same day day for amish guy over in western ny ( letchworth state park area) he was skidding with a team of white percherons the mare is 17 years old and the gelding is 15 years old. The mare is in great shape but gelding is real stiff legged and has a hard time backing up he drags his feet and even fell down once while backing up to a hitch. He is looking to get a new team, he has had this team 5 years and he thinks the gelding was work to hard at a young age, he said that can damage there joints . Im going to finish the job with a tractor and let the old boy stay in the barn for the winter I love watching the horses work but that was to painfull to watch. the amish in this community cant use chiansaws so they have to hire it done, but im not going to charge to skid it out ill do it just so that poor horse doesnt have to I love your videos you do a great job of carrying on tradition that you love thank you so much for letting us be part of what you do even though im a stihl guy lol
Hey Rich, that's nice that you're gonna help out.
You were coming off as one hell of great guy until you admitted to your Stihl fetish. :-) I've seen knucklehead cowboys run horses into ground and ruin them. Almost proud of it. Of course the horses belonged to the ranch and not them.
@@johnbaskett2309 Not everyone that works horses appreciate them or should even be using them, weather they are English or Amish.
Letchworth is so close to my hometown.. I was born in Warsaw. Beautiful country. Thanks for making it easier for the struggling horse.
Nice to see Buck and Ken out in the woods. Nice job dropping that tree, you did a nice back cut, good control !
Nothing like a sharp chain on the chainsaw. Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and your family and especially to the horses.
Thanks merry Christmas to you. Will have to pass that along to the horses😀
I love to watch you work the horses... There were a couple of older farmers when I was a kid in Southwestern Ohio who worked horses, but I don't recall them being so easy to handle... MERRY CHRISTMAS to you your family... Stay safe and warm...
Thanks! And you as well and your family!
10:38: bullseye! Strong work, Jim!
Perfect in between the 2 trees, great Job Jim.
Great shot felling that tree. Dead on the money.
Thanks! They don’t always go just where I want them to but that one did
Have a Merry Christmas Jim Brenda and the rest of the family ... Many thanks for the videos ...
Thank you so much! Merry Christmas to you as well
It looks like you thinning out to Forest pretty quickly, but planting new little trees would be a good idea
Great video 👍 , hard working all the time , stay safe ! Bob
Thanks, you as well!
My team is 25 years old and still getting light jobs done.
That’s great!
That looks like a very dangerous job.....but you know what you're doing. Stay safe. Happy Holidays.
Yes it is, thanks, happy holidays to you as well
Wery nice to look at when you working with your horses. It seems that you have a mild winter also. Here in Sweden its raining instead of snowing.
Greetings to you in Sweden! Yes, right where we live we are having a fairly mild winter, no snow anyways. A lot of places around us have gotten a lot of snow recently. Thanks for watching!
You are quite the teamster. It is amazing to watch you work. Thank you for videoing what you do.
My father who was born in 1917 had two work horses during his school years. As the depression increased in intensity and before they lost the farm; my grandfather had to sell the two horses. The person who bought the horses used then to pull a road scraper. The next day on the way home from school my dad found each horse laying dead on the side of the road. The new owner worked them both to death. My dad telling us this story is one of the few times I ever saw him cry. As we watch you Jim, work so carefully with your horses
What a sad sad story. So sorry for your family. Those were rough times. Thanks for watching out the videos hope you enjoy them
Thanks for doing what you do,especially buck and the rest of your team😎
We're over 80. And we love the history of it all and the memories come back to us so vivid,,,thanks mr.jim...we love love you and value every video,,,xx
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for your support!
I had a 16 year old Appaloosa gelding for a teaching horse (English saddle).
Merry Christmas from Nova Scotia, keep the vids coming, you do great work with your crew.
And Merry Christmas to you! Thanks for watching!
Those 3 bears across from the outhouse look really good. Didn't expect to see them.
Just a little surprise in the woods
With regards to your saw not starting, it could be a number of things but if i may... when you run the saw hard and then immediately shut it down you can do serious damage to the piston and cylinder. Give it a ten second warm up before cutting and a ten second cool down before shutting off. Among my collection of saws is a Husky 371 that with a sharp chain just drops through a log and is still going strong after i don't know how many years. Thanks for going over the cradle hitch, i was wondering how you rigged that up.
There's some things modern logging can't do. Cherry picking logs out of the woods with minimal impact is one. Well done sir
Thanks
👍👌🇨🇦❤🎄☃️🎅 gr8 video Brenda & Jim, congrats on 10+K subs
Thanks Pocket Change, merry Christmas to you

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of your lovely family.
Congratulations on 10k, maybe one day you will hit 100k
Thanks, yes we are three old duffers. We are excited about reaching our milestones. 100 K seems a little far off for us though
Thanks Jim
Thank You!!
I sure do enjoy the slow pace of your videos. I'll comment often mostly to bump you up in the algorithm and hopefully bring more subscribers.
Thanks!
May you, Jim, and your family have a blessed Christmas. Keep safe and keep well.
Thanks, you as well
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours Jim .
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you as well
You did a fine job of felling that tree in the precise spot. I cut a lot of wood here in Ohio but I skid them out with a four wheeler. I've skidded out some 24 + inchers, but the horses would be much better. I noticed when you're all hitched up and hit the seat, you better hold on, cause they're itching to go!! Love watching you log, especially. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Thanks, and merry Christmas to you as well
Another great video! Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.
Thank you, merry Christmas to you as well
Very pleasant viewing. Informative.
Those 372 where good saws i love the 562 ive found the gas is eating fuil lines and pluging carbs it seems the gas is horable for small gas engins
I haven’t had any trouble with that yet, maybe it’s because I use them a lot
Good job jim and the horses i love it.
Thank you. This is interesting and relaxing. I enjoyed the video.
Great! Thanks for watching.
I enjoy all of your videos! Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
Thanks for watching merry Christmas and happy new year to you as well
Buck’s got a lot of pull left in him yet 😀
Hi
That was a great tree fall ,Buck an Ken do a good job pulling. Thank you for great video Merry Christmas to you an your family ❤🎄☃️🎅🤶
Thanks for watching! Merry Christmas to you and your family as well
Wish you lived here in Iowa. We could use you and your teams to cut down and haul out the August 10 windstorm damaged trees we have here on our clubs acreage. The horses do so little ground damage as compared to skid steers. Thanks for taking the time to record, edit and share your timber experiences.
Thanks for watching!
Good video i liked it
You do a lot of explaining and teaching. I hope you keep going.
Thanks, I’ll try to keep going
Seasons Greetings ! Appreciate the videos !
Thank you merry Christmas to you as well!
I watch because its earthy, got good horses, and your life is very real, compared with most.
Thanks for watching, we appreciate it!
All the stuff u do with your horses is all very cool . Happy holidays
Thanks, same to you
Love it. I always love seeing a team working. Growing up we had a pair of half brother/sister appy morgan/ appy quarter horse team. The gelding appy/Morgan was a great puller. I got the bug from my great uncle's team 😎. Glad you are doing this Channel. Team will keep you young👍. It did my great uncle Bud, he just passed last week @ 92. Keep up the great work and vidjas. MERRY Christmas
Our condolences to you and your family for the loss of your great uncle. Thanks for watching the videos, and merry Christmas to you as well. Glad you had good memories.
Great job.
So why do we have so much trouble creating voice controlled log haulers? I am impressed by how quickly the horses drag off multi ton logs.
between 20 and middle twenties., depending on many things, shape, they're in , feed, care, and what kind of work they're doing,, we used the older horses to go out with the manure, drill oats, roll oats, bring in some hay,. just a few hours, nothing heavy or where they had to hit the collar hard or get on their knees to pull and gave them a longer rest more often.
I have seen people yrs ago with one team that used them like a tractor, worked them most of the day and just cut them loose at night and done the same thing everyday. the horses seemed to make it alright,, they just had no TLC. often wondered why they kept a dog and it it was even petted.
Yes, there are a lot of variables. Thank you for sharing.
Unfortunately there are and always were people who treat their horses like tools only, not like the sentient partners and friends they really are.
Nice looking saw logs.
Great video Jim!! Well done Brenda for editing the video!!!! Merry Christmas guys!!!
This is Brenda, I didn’t edit the video. Jim does all the editing. He does a pretty good job. Thanks for watching!
And merry Christmas to you!
