I'm 63 and could drive a team skidding before I could ride a bike. Anyone that still logs with horses is #1 in my book.
That's great man! I have never done team skidding or horse logging but I did watch a buddy. I drove log truck and most types of logging equipment except processor in Wisconsin and Michigan. I have a residential tree removal service now. I'm also an avid bike rider. When did you learn to ride a bike?

I have a 24 yo Belgian mare that like to work. She has arthritis in her neck so I pick implements with a lighter weight pole. We lost other Belgians by 17-18 so we just take it as it goes. I often work 3 abreast to lighten the load and now have her as the extra one not on the pole. She calms down the other horses and makes them work better so even old she is worth her weight in gold.
My perchxquarter mare was 32 when I lost her😔she was a wonderful horse. to grow up with! Had her since I was 3 and my grandpa broke her for me! Miss her so much!!!♥️🙋♀️‼️☮️

Another great video. I remember when I was quite young, before school days, going with my dad, my uncle and grandpa, to Mo River bottoms in Mo. They would cut giant Cottonwood logs. Then pull them out with horses. Build a fire for me, to keep warm. Fried bologna for lunch

What I like about your videos is that you just don't do things, you figure out why do a thing this way, or another way, This ends up doing things for a reason, I humbly see it as having a bank of purposes based on reflection. I'm retired, I like, in the morning, take my coffee listening when you explain things.
logging is like picking up pixie sticks (the game), if you don't pull the right ones out first you just have a big mess.

I do not understand where the thumbs down come from. Jim treats his horses very well, doesn't overwork them and has a very good farm operation.

@@olddave4833 While I do believe that animal rights people do a lot of good for many animals, it is also true that some of them overshoot the mark, often out of ignorance. As farmers and horsemen we should try to educate them, but also utilize their efforts for our purposes.

My Father had a Percheron/Morgan cross that did light work until he was 24 years old.

I would say as a older man that this kind of work was before many of us were born and it is great to see that
someone is still showing use how it was done many year before motor powered machines came in to our time.

The working age of horses can be as different as that of people, some last longer, some have to stop earlier. In 2015 I had to put down a Belgian at the age of 32, since he couldn't chew and digest any hay any more which is the way they create body heat in winter. He worked regularly in the field till he was 28. Other horses I had gave out in their late teens. Presently my Percherons are 13 and 18 and they do everything we have to do on the farm. Of course, with an older horse you want to practice moderation, that's by the way, what my wife exhorts me to observe, too, since am older guy.

Clearly, you have a very personal relationship with each of your horses. As you mentioned, we all have a lifespan, useful or retired. Please let us know how you deal with the final days of such horses. The emotional aspects are something most of us can relate to with our pets. We memorialize them. It's devastating. With sincere respect, I am interested in how you and your mentors manage a final resting place for these beautiful work horses. Most of us are in awe of your life and skills, then there are the amazing horses. Many of us want to know more.
People don't realize how gentle you are with them. They are also very gentle around you. No one wants to get hurt, even they recognize that. You are very concerned with them all the time. Horses are a lot like us, as they get older we tend to move a little slower and more careful. Yes they do love to work, they know it's good for themselves.

I was felling and bucking trees the same day day for amish guy over in western ny ( letchworth state park area) he was skidding with a team of white percherons the mare is 17 years old and the gelding is 15 years old. The mare is in great shape but gelding is real stiff legged and has a hard time backing up he drags his feet and even fell down once while backing up to a hitch. He is looking to get a new team, he has had this team 5 years and he thinks the gelding was work to hard at a young age, he said that can damage there joints . Im going to finish the job with a tractor and let the old boy stay in the barn for the winter I love watching the horses work but that was to painfull to watch. the amish in this community cant use chiansaws so they have to hire it done, but im not going to charge to skid it out ill do it just so that poor horse doesnt have to I love your videos you do a great job of carrying on tradition that you love thank you so much for letting us be part of what you do even though im a stihl guy lol

You were coming off as one hell of great guy until you admitted to your Stihl fetish. :-) I've seen knucklehead cowboys run horses into ground and ruin them. Almost proud of it. Of course the horses belonged to the ranch and not them.

My father who was born in 1917 had two work horses during his school years. As the depression increased in intensity and before they lost the farm; my grandfather had to sell the two horses. The person who bought the horses used then to pull a road scraper. The next day on the way home from school my dad found each horse laying dead on the side of the road. The new owner worked them both to death. My dad telling us this story is one of the few times I ever saw him cry. As we watch you Jim, work so carefully with your horses

Just a little surprise in the woods
With regards to your saw not starting, it could be a number of things but if i may... when you run the saw hard and then immediately shut it down you can do serious damage to the piston and cylinder. Give it a ten second warm up before cutting and a ten second cool down before shutting off. Among my collection of saws is a Husky 371 that with a sharp chain just drops through a log and is still going strong after i don't know how many years. Thanks for going over the cradle hitch, i was wondering how you rigged that up.
There's some things modern logging can't do. Cherry picking logs out of the woods with minimal impact is one. Well done sir

You did a fine job of felling that tree in the precise spot. I cut a lot of wood here in Ohio but I skid them out with a four wheeler. I've skidded out some 24 + inchers, but the horses would be much better. I noticed when you're all hitched up and hit the seat, you better hold on, cause they're itching to go!! Those 372 where good saws i love the 562 ive found the gas is eating fuil lines and pluging carbs it seems the gas is horable for small gas engins

Wish you lived here in Iowa. We could use you and your teams to cut down and haul out the August 10 windstorm damaged trees we have here on our clubs acreage. The horses do so little ground damage as compared to skid steers. Thanks for taking the time to record, edit and share your timber experiences.

Love it. I always love seeing a team working. Growing up we had a pair of half brother/sister appy morgan/ appy quarter horse team. The gelding appy/Morgan was a great puller. So why do we have so much trouble creating voice controlled log haulers? I am impressed by how quickly the horses drag off multi ton logs.
between 20 and middle twenties., depending on many things, shape, they're in , feed, care, and what kind of work they're doing,, we used the older horses to go out with the manure, drill oats, roll oats, bring in some hay,. just a few hours, nothing heavy or where they had to hit the collar hard or get on their knees to pull and gave them a longer rest more often.
I have seen people yrs ago with one team that used them like a tractor, worked them most of the day and just cut them loose at night and done the same thing everyday. the horses seemed to make it alright,, they just had no TLC. often wondered why they kept a dog and it it was even petted.

Unfortunately there are and always were people who treat their horses like tools only, not like the sentient partners and friends they really are.
