  • Today we are doing some training with our Suffolk Punch colts, Duke & Earl, and at the same time getting some work done! We are putting up a temporary fence for the colts and the cows. We are using the Percherons, Ken and Buck, to help carry fenceposts and train the colts to lead.
Check out our Merchandise! ► www.workinghorseswithjim.com/...
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Fun video - watching the colts following the big horses - trying to grab a bite along the way. They did good - especially when Lady and Bill came running up along the side. And Lady and Bill running into the barn, and out the other side - comical. Horses are alot of work, but they are so special in their ways.

Hahahaha! Omgosh! I’ve had my gang find barn doors open and go thru the barn and back out to the driveway while I’m working on things in the paddock! They just seem to know! And I love that wire fencing... it’s lasting me longer then any other... and the deer don’t seem to break it! Great film! Made made laugh...

Good evening Jim and Brenda, your videos just get better and better 😀 so much goings on with the horses, as for Ken .... well excuse me hahaha 😆 that went on for some time lol.lve found anywhere there is sand and horses are turned out .....the first thing is a jolly good roll, they love sand.Maybe it's to discourage flys or have a darn Good scratch, bit like a dust bath.Jim your corn looks very good 👍is this your next big job to get it all in! Look forward to seeing that.and which horses you will use. Lady and Bill are feeling rather mischievous, lovely to but like you said can be dangerous. We use to take a 55 gallon drum, and roll the electric wire around it! roll it on, roll it off! your right, you never trust working horses around loose horses, can be a disaster!

So fun to watch you two working as a team as well as the horses. Your colts are gorgeous and look like they are going to be a handful to train, especially Earl. Seeing Bill and Lady out wasa sight to behold. So funny when they ran into the barn. Seems horses always can spot an open gate, At least that has been my experiences lol, lots of catching to do. Just beautiful to watch the horses work together on a task. Great voice command training. They really want to please. Amazing how those fence post and wire can hold the animals in, tangles, my heart went out for you Jim. Sure beats the post hole digging days. Still love my post hole digger though. Brenda, sure reminds me of my days help my dad run the post and bob wire for our pastures. As I'm mending from a full knee replacement and it's in the wee hours of the morning, I love watching your videos. Very soothing, I just have to remember to get up every video and walk or elevate the leg. Watching from New Hampshire. I'm trying to locate a driving team in our area to help us clear logs from the forest, Downed trees are such a fire hazard, my biggest fear. God Bless and will keep watching :)

Hi Jim and Brenda--To help with the rolling out of old wire I go to a welding shop and ask for some used mig welder reels. They have no use for them. and I roll up the old electric fence wire on them. To roll out the wire I just put a stick through the centre hole and the wire spins of without a hitch.

What nice day to "make fence ". The clouds look so great. I like their colors. Dark on their bottom , light gray on the top and lots of blue sky between them. We have had lots of days like that this year. I have used posts like the ones you put in. After a few years in the sun they can get brittle and break. It pays not to hit them too hard with a hammer then. Thanks for the ride in the green green grass!!

One of your best videos. A beautiful day coupled with the fall colors and sounds of nature. The hay field is just beautiful. You must get excellent hay from that field. Very relaxing watching your fencing techniques. It is fun watching horses being horses and trying to grab a bite of clover or a nibble of the halter rope or sneaking through an open door. A very relaxing video to watch and remember times growing up on the farm when things were much less hectic.

When I was a kid I would plow the corn field for my grandpa with his two mules. He always fed them a scoop of cracked corn before we worked them. Well that field was in a bottom and little wind ever reached it. It was hot and humid. Those mules would always pass gas right in my face when plowing, man did I hate that smell.

Great Video, everyone got thier exercise today. Bill and Lady were already our to pasture, and the blacks got their work out. and Duke and Earl got some too! as well as some nice clover. And you got the new fence in seems to work ok on installing it simple enough it's nice sometimes when you economize and it works out for a change. Gonna be interesting to see if you can break Earl on his chewing thngs. sometimes those kinds of habits are hard to break. we'll see!. Thanks again for a really nice time and for sharing. ECF.

Everybody round here (Yorkshire, england) uses those plastic posts, in fact I've not seen any other type. The foot plate breaks off but otherwise they're good. But we'd use a lot more posts.. 3 or 4 metres apart... Or the line goes slack. Although we're using white tape so maybe it'll be OK with wire

Nice, working together like this. I had fence posts similar to those, A fair hank of tape, and a little battery driven energiser, stashed along with some other horse gear in a duffel bag crossways on top of the pack. Rode alone halfway across New South Wales 20 years ago. The sharp ends poked out the open end of the bag, so put them pointing out the traffic side, else get stabbed. Someone said something, I said if they gonna scrape your car, you are way too close to the horses. I'd build a little round yard every night. Our country roads have travelling stock reserves, all marked or the locals would point me to one, many didn't have a gate, so I'd build one with the electric and they could go free. Also had them so they'd camp on a hobble, heavy swivel chain we call a hobble-check, and a rope, on the near foreleg, and could peg them out to graze. A bell on one is handy, wakes you up if there's a flurry in the night. Chink of hobbles and tinkle of the bell as they graze is reassuring.
Lovely video, Jim and Brenda. What a team!

A tip for using "treadins" when electric fencing. Do not treat them like a normal wire fence. You wanted them to all have the wire on the same side so animals push against the post. Not necessary since they will not be leaning on it. In actual fact, it is Much better to invert every second one. If the wind catches the wire and the posts are facing opposite directions, the wire is less likely to work out of the "treadin". An electric fence will withstand windy conditions much better that way.
PS, I think the work "strands" is what you were searching for when you said 'pieces' of wire running through the plastic of the electric fence rope. They are made from a mix of twisted plastic and fine wire strands which conduct the electricity.
If you don't use a top wire, horses will chew the 'treadins' and pull them out of the ground. Cattle will also.
Buy yourself some electric fence 'Reels' for Christmas. You will never look back. Pick some up at a clearing sale for next to nothing. They will pay for themselves in no time, no matter how little you use them. Now you have the 'treadins' you may as well get reels to match and you will probably find you use them more often. The pigs would love to have grazing behind electric tape.

I can just agree with the commenter "get yourself a electric fence reel" they are so useful. Working on a farm that doesn't have them and every time we have to do some fence it is lot of work. At home we switched to reels and it soo easy to do fencing. White oak pastures in georgia (usa) does it with an atv and a reel.

Those Belgians are like little kids! They knew JUST WHEN you were distracted and made a RUN for it! When you caught up with them it was as if they were playing around, grabbing CANDY where they knew you kept it! FUNNNY!!

Y'all might think about running The Sled along where ya want the fence line. Then you can follow where it marked the grass for putting posts in straight line

No better way to train young horses than tagging along with the big guys. I used to tie my foals to their mama's collar where I could. They learned so much tagging along. Some of my mares weren't broke to harness and that wasn't an option, but the ones that were, their babies learned the very fastest. Mouthiness is one of the reasons many a colt gets gelded... I wish I'd seen your treatise on corn a few weeks ago. The corn I grew in my garden was starting to mold, so I picked it, chopped off the tips and dried it in the oven.
