    If I could save the union without freeing any slaves I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.” - A.L

      Executive Mansion,
      Washington, August 22, 1862.
      Hon. Horace Greeley:
      Dear Sir.
      I have just read yours of the 19th. addressed to myself through the New-York Tribune. If there be in it any statements, or assumptions of fact, which I may know to be erroneous, I do not, now and here, controvert them. If there be in it any inferences which I may believe to be falsely drawn, I do not now and here, argue against them. If there be perceptable in it an impatient and dictatorial tone, I waive it in deference to an old friend, whose heart I have always supposed to be right.
      As to the policy I "seem to be pursuing" as you say, I have not meant to leave any one in doubt.
      I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views.
      I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men every where could be free.
      Yours,
      A. Lincoln.

      ...1860 Political rhetoric. Once he was in office, we all saw what he did, the maneuvering he needed to ultimately do the right thing. You yourself make decisions today after choosing a different, less astute direction a few years ago. Don't be a hypocrite now!

    • @MacroX1231
      @MacroX1231 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@williamisraelgomararias5737 I love it! So, his "oft-expressed personal wish WAS that all men every where could be free". But, being constrained to do his duty, his view of official duty led him to have to consider all options to save the union.
      But from this letter, which he wished to be taken as said to "an old friend, whose heart I have always supposed to be right" (a confidant), what we know is that he felt that:
      -His paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union.
      -He did NOT agree with anyone who would not save the Union.
      -He would do more whenever he believed doing more would help the cause.
      -If he could save it by freeing all the slaves, he would do it.
      - He was committed to correcting errors when shown to be errors.
      - Whatever he did about slavery, and the colored race, he did because he believed it would help to save the Union.
      From history, we know what he did and what he suffered. End of story for me!

    • @JulieRainyPDX
      @JulieRainyPDX 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that was written while Lincoln was campaigning to be president? He had to appease the slave holders so they wouldn't secede from the union. But once he was elected, his life's mission was to end slavery forever. I think Jefferson had the opportunity to abolish slavery, but he was too far in debt because of his lavish lifestyle. He only freed a few of his hundreds of slaves. He knew slavery was wrong but did nothing.

      You mean persons born from a convict are then convicts themselves and one can sell a convict's children and relatives down the river against their will? And the convicts have no rights that free people are bound to respect under the law? And white lawbreakers aren't considered convicts even though sentenced to penitentiary? I didn't know that!

      That’s true. I would be interested to know how they came up with that while debating the amendment. I wonder if they were already thinking about private prisons for profit. I did learn that many slaves were owned by corporations who leased them to people. In this case it was George Washington. In his will all of their slaves were to be set free upon the death of his wife. That’s sounds like better than nothing until you learn that many of them were not owned by him, but by corporations.

He really wasn't that pro anti slavery until later

    • @CH-zc8qx
      @CH-zc8qx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      He said that in the context of preserving the Union. He would do anything to stop the civil war. Historically, Lincoln had always made it clear he detested slavery, only he didn't openly side with the Abolitionist until later.

    • @HeyIamHunter
      @HeyIamHunter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      As someone else said, that's more of a quote about his responsibility to keep the nation united than his personal views on slavery. Lincoln was always anti-slavery. He was raised that way. His parents were a part of an abolitionist sect of their church denomination, and moved from slave-state Kentucky to free states Indiana and then Illinois. In his autobiography, Abe even says they moved to Indiana because it was a free state.
      The war was also absolutely started because of slavery. You can claim it was fought by the Federals to preserve the Union, however all the southern states cited slavery as their main reason for secession, and they also shot first.

    • @MrOhio-pn4fx
      @MrOhio-pn4fx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Fun Fact: Lincoln wrote that as a public response to an editorial in the New York Tribune that criticized him for not taking more decisive action against slavery. He already had a draft of the Emancipation Proclamation written at the time. This is him saying how he, as the president of the United States, puts the union above all else. Furthermore, he concludes the letter as follows: "I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free." So, don't take quotes out of context and don't hold historical figures up to todays standards. Please look into historical facts and dig for the truth before you try to slander good names.

    American civil war was not about slavery nor it was about race american civil war was about conflict between new industrial type of rich; northern bankers,and industry tycoons who wanted to transition to ''modern slavery'' industrial tycoons wanted educated workers so they can work in factories bankers wanted slavery to end so they can work and take out loans etc they also wanted bigger goverment so they could lobby more efficent
    On the otherside southern plantation owners and feudal lords did not want slavery to end because they depended on unregulated and uneducated workforce

      The reason for the civil war was to abolish slavery in America forever.
      Maybe the war could have been avoided if America's founding fathers (including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson) had declared their hundreds of slaves to be set free and paid for their services before having the audacity to sign any documents regarding freedom in America.

      Not really quite a few Democrats were actually pissed beyond all belief that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. This was due to the fact that Lincoln was actually going to be pretty fair during reconstruction and that he had already Pardoned quite a few Important people in the Democrat party that sided with the confederacy. John Wilkes Booth was just kind of crazy and believe the south would love him for it. A common Texan line that describe the event was “It takes cowards to shoot a man in the back while under a white flag”

      Lincoln's family couldn't afford slaves. He grew up in Indiana, which outlawed slavery, and moved to different union states after. It's possible that he may have, at some point in his life, owned one or more slaves, the circumstances of where and how he lived would seem to rule out that possibility.
