I think that was written while Lincoln was campaigning to be president? He had to appease the slave holders so they wouldn't secede from the union. But once he was elected, his life's mission was to end slavery forever. I think Jefferson had the opportunity to abolish slavery, but he was too far in debt because of his lavish lifestyle. Lincoln's family couldn't afford slaves. He grew up in Indiana, which outlawed slavery, and moved to different union states after. It's possible that he may have, at some point in his life, owned one or more slaves, the circumstances of where and how he lived would seem to rule out that possibility.
