I always wondered why no one is talking about it. Sikhs have rich musical traditions setup by our Guru Sahibaans and we should make every effort to preserve our traditions. Out of tune and Filmi tunes have taken over which is so sad. Only qualified people can bring rich traditions back and not politicians.
Let alone making an effort, most don’t even know about it. Same goes for every social-spiritual aspect of the life which Gurus bestowed upon us (Art, Culture, Scribing, Luthiery, etc), all of which deserved to be preserved. We have lost the treasures of Gurus, no wonder the pitiful state Sikhs find themselves in.

The loss of Kirtan excellence is not only saddening it has deprived our souls of spiritual path
I still remember the 'Ragas' that I used to listen when my Grandmother tuned our Radio to The Golden Temple live Kirtan in the mornings. That SOUND was like peace in Heaven. That was our morning alarm. And now... We failed.

I always missed this kirtan that I grew up listening to. Commercial kirtan has ruined it. Our gurus have written all shabads in Ragas for a reason because each raga evokes an emotion related to that shabad. Kirtan is not just shabad but the frequency of music that affects our brain waves. Everything exists at different frequency. It takes you to a different level of focus. I wish old kirtan can be brought back. Thanks for making this video.

It will take decades to bring back this heritage with considerable empathy. There is anger & sadness that we have arrived at such low levels of music in our kirtan

Sikhism is about inclusiveness. Earlier sindhis also used to recite gurubani. Raag based gurubani is so soulful. 🙏
yeah same with qawwalli singers now its almost dead i dont find any of the classical singers or dairas or any folk of previous generation it is so heart braking that 2 years back i had found a group of qawwali or sufi singers one amomgest them was a very old man and when he sang i felt the devotion in his voice and the way he expresses , sadly when i talked to him he told me his childrens dont want to sing and continue so hes his last kind and he doesnt have any students either , i dont know where this person is now but i hope hes well and healthy somewhere
I wonder why this music is not being brought forward. Harmandir Sahib is such a magical place.

Bhai Baldeep Singh has said what my mother felt.....she refused to listen to the kirtan at Gurdwaras because the ragis sang besura neither did they recite properly from Granth Sahib.

The truth is that if it was not for tremendous efforts and hundreds of millions of Rupees in today's money spent by Satguru Partap Singh Ji and later Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji to preserve and promote true Gurbani Kirtan, this tradition would have been completely lost forever. It was their efforts that reverberated the true tradition back to all parts of Punjab, including Amritsar Ragis who were then reinspired and instructed to perform Kirtan in Raags using string instruments.
Although, the situation seems dismal, however, it has not been long and we can still restore the situation and preserve our heritage. Like someone here said we need "qualified people" to preserve the tradition.

Much has already, been said by my brothers sisters and/or others, about the loss of glory of the real raga kirtan at Darbar Sahib in the olden but golden times, previously, So, I need not say more, But, what I want to say humbly, but emphetically is that we should remember and honour the ragis, rabaabies of the Baba Nanak's times and their descendants like Bhai Lal ji and many others, I watched and listened, sometimes back, Bhai Lal ji or his descendants say that they were refused singing session at Sri Darbar Sahib Amrisar, by the so-called intellectual management of the Golden Temple, now, This pinched my heart and soul strong as to why?¿? such an unjustified denial to those, whose ascendents accompanied Baba Nanak Sahib ji, Bhai Mardana ji, our revered one, this means we do not, in reality, respect our great BABA JI,
It's my stubborn wish and I'm sure it would be of many others, that the rabaabies 'n raagis of that lineage ought to be invited, specially to falicitate and above all, we to be able to listen to their divine spiritual kirtan, which would be flowing down to us from the times of our great GURUS

When young, I heard him reciting Lawan phere and singing shabads thereafter. His voice is still in the mind. A powerful Raagi.
The sad reality is that artists of that caliber don’t exist anymore.. Can not spot a single artist of that level to be given that chance
The British made a uniform to look nice for their eyes. That spoiled to tradition of music. No one will talk about it, bcos the Respect to all the Guru's.
Unfortunately this documentary is not in Punjabi. How the heck native punjabis will understand this problem.

Man as a young sikh man I can only wonder how glorious and culturally rich the times of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, if only the Maharaja was able to have a successful successor and the Sarkar e khalsa didn't fall prey to Rani Jindan and the traitors Lal Singh and the lot, we could've seen a renaissance by now. All of it is lost, religious and political boundaries have become rigid, constant slanders among sects of sikhism and ever present threat of assimilation by larger bodies politically and religiously. It is so true!! There have been times where a kirtan jatha would play a tune that sounded so familiar to a song and tunes that were all over the place. Literally would irritate my ears and soul. We need to do better.
Our and our future generations are and will be deprived from listening kirtan based on ragas from Rababbi background .Those people most of the time used to be from Muslim sects who believed in GuruNanak Sahib and belong to generations of Mardana ji .Now time is changed and everything is political and commercial.But still Bhai Surjan Singh ji and Bhai Nirmal Singh ji ,s shabad Gayan touch the soul .

It’s the birthplace for that kind of music in general, Sufi as well, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s entire family or lineage was from Amritsar, India, the root and instruments being Hindustani classical music and basic prayers are called kirtan in Hinduism.

There are few ragis left, and they should get together and start an aggressive movement to attempt to revive and reverse the demise of badly performing raagia

Now a days some Sikhs act as if they r guru sahibs. In Indore there r many gurdwara by sindhis where they also have pictures of hindu gods.
Sikhs make them remove guru Granth Sahbji as it insulted Guru sahib
It is like Talaban. We have gurdwara in Bombay. Sikhs came and nake us remove the picture of Siri Guru Nanak sahibji.this gurdwara was in now pakistan and then started in bombay.

SSA, S.Kultar singh ji, I believe all religions consolidated power by exclusion so control is easy and then political agendas could be carried better as well. Same with jagnath puri why Muslims and Dalits not allowed to be rababis at least in parikrama. let chieftains have power play in the core part.
You have got a point regarding easy control but just to correct you. Dalits are allowed inside the temple.. All Hindus are allowed. Muslims are not allowed because the temple had faced many attacks from muslim so they were restricted and the restrictions are still applicable today.
No one is bothered about these important things. Now its just everything except religion. You must chose 1 out of 2. Either religion or politics.
This time people have extreme anger and fear.
