A lot of great information on hitting a nice 2 handed backhand. A couple of pts to add is 1) if you are looking for more topspin, be sure to have the paddle face below the hands as the swing is coming thru then of course the paddle is above the hands on follow thru as they are both hitting. 2) the left leg…..at 1st Katrina was coming around with the left leg on the follow thru , but at around 10:33 she stopped doing it. As you lean into the ball/ upper body and shoulders rotate as jordan is suggesting to - its natual for the left hip to follow around then the left leg. The power flow continues forward this way and also you are already set in better position for the next ball

My husband and I just started playing pickleball about a month ago. Of all the videos we have seen we like your channel the best. I think we watch one every day. Lots to learn and so much fun. Thanks for the great instruction.
This is a shot I’ve really wanted to master, and this video is broken down into steps that I think I can actually master, Thanks!! Hope to join in one of your camps!
I'm very new to the game (playing once a week starting a couple months ago) but a couple weeks ago tried playing left handed against a weaker player just to keep it interesting/fair. discovered the two handed backhand this way and was amazed by the power and unique trajectory I was getting. using it righthanded now too with good results. can't see myself using it the majority of the time though, just because the time it takes to set up seems a lot higher than my usual backhand slice.
Lol, I’m not stopping you! The reason for my answer by the way is due to the problem you’ll have on your grip. You will have an awkward grip on one side, OR you’ll have to switch grips all the time which is NOT ideal.
What an excellent video and breakdown of the motion and finishing position. I've never used the two-handed backhand, but that changes on Monday. Can't wait to see the faces on my opponents. The closed stance is the killer "tip". Thanks Jordan!
Skip it. Save the 2 handers for women. If you can't maneuver your foot work and follow through for a 1 hander for topspin as a guy? Watch Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer in the mid 20 tens for beautiful 1 hand backhands. If you have to resort to 2 hands..might as well join the womens ranks. Late 60's top ranked Rod Laver incorperated slice with his 1 handed topspin backhands. His left arm looked twice as large as his right arm. Your YOUNG..be great if we pulled you back into Tennis or consider Table Tennis, a very quick footed sport with a lot of spin and quick rallies. If your reflexes and footwork are still sharp (in a smaller court area like Table Tennis) you can still be very competive at least at the club level well into middle age. There are so many grips in Table Tennis, I incorperate the rerverse penhold grip (not traditional penhold) which is Asian in origin, after doodling around with every grip in the book for years. Maybe I need to be more open to pickleball as I'M a senior, at least in age..

Hi Jordan and Katrina Excellent video on the 2 handed backhand. Your great tip on closing the front foot slightly was an excellent observation. I like on the spot tips cause it’s more realistic on what a student may do. Question: I’m not sure where the power comes from? Left hand or right? Or both? Look forward to your reply? Chuck
All the power should come from the left hand. Hit the ball with your left hand, and your right hand is only there to steady/control the paddle. Make sure to bend your LEFT arm at the elbow in order to generate powerful backhands.
Great video. Definitely will start to work on this shot. My good friend Jayson came in with a Briones shirt yesterday. I'll have to purchase one so we have matching shirts. Been following you since I started playing last April.
Jordon, can you please breakdown what percentage of power is coming from the left hand/left side and how much from the right hand/right side. I really enjoyed the video. Thank you!
Fantastic video, coming from racquetball, I have no feel for a two handed shot and my backhand is pretty good. What is the main reason for going with two hands?
One thing I noticed but didn't see any comment on was how straight the arms are expected to be or how close (or not) you're looking to have the ball relative to your body. It appears you're arms were straighter during the swing than were Katrina's. Would love your thoughts there.
Good video. But with short PB 0:18 court seems too easy to drive it hitting flat and going long. Assuming it’s ROfServe, Necessary to get even lower and put topspin…or other spin?
Good video, I appreciate description of technique. Thks! I notice your arms are relatively straight during the back swing and as you hit the ball, but Katrina's elbows and thus arms are bent. Which is better and why?
Another great content and tutorial Jordan I'm transitioning from tennis but I use a 1-handed backhand, I'm a right handed should I start using my non dominant hand which is my left and my dominant hand which is my right to guide or the other way around Thank you for the input
If I didn’t want to hit a cross court two handed backhand but, rather straight back across, what would I need to do differently in my set up or swing, or follow thru
Watch at 5:20, I explain it quickly here. If you want to hit it down the line, your contact is going to be more closer to your left foot. When hitting cross court, you’ll contact the ball more out in front.
She has a very nice stroke with good power transfer. Closing the stance enables more coiling in the take back-showing the back of the right shoulder to the opponent. However, I also noticed that after you suggested a more closed stance (stepping forward and across), your student tended to leave her back foot behind her rather than stepping around or through. The result is to lock the hips and prevent power transfer. If the player is leaning forward with the back leg staying back, the uncoiling rotation in the unit turn is harder. To exaggerate the point, no one will rotate when they are leaning forward if the result is falling on their back. Also, it is easier to move forward if you step through. However, on a low ball, one would not expect to rotate the hips as easily, unless you’re like Nadal and can get very low with the legs while maintaining an upright torso.
Thanks Jordan, another awesome video by you! 3 questions. 1)I have a one handed backhand that I can hit hard enough from the baseline to pass people with down the line sometimes. I'm still trying to cross that 4.0 threshold. Should this be the shot I spend the time on?(I don't play singles) 2)Any guesstimate on how many hours it took you to master it? 3)Do you recommend progressing to it after first developing a 2 handed block/reset and high backhand volley/smash?
Great questions! If you have a consistent one hander, than stick with that. Although as I’ve coached many players and you are looking to get better and better in doubles, I would say learn the two handed block first. Two handed shots aren’t necessary, they just make things easier.
I read through most of the comments and I noticed in the video that you really didn't say when to use this shot. In the comments you said you used it mostly for returns (and I guess you mean the return of serve). If it is.a return of server then doesn't that go against one of your other videos about trying to get more arc and float toward the baseline to allow time to get up to the net? If you mean any return, is it advisable to attempt against two solid players at kitchen line? I typically don't attempt a deep drive since the net players have enough time to react.
I rarely use this shot as a return. I use it for a 3rd shot drive. It’s very effective if you can keep the ball low. Also, if you play singles, this is a much needed shot to succeed.
Good to see you can also counter the powerful two-handed drive with two-handed drive. Is it also a preferred way to return an aggressive slice shot with two-handed topspin?
If you hit the ball exactly how I teach it in this video, you will have significant topspin on the ball. Hence the title: how to hit with power and topspin with ease
Why is all this 'topspin backhand' scenarios are only 2 hander examples? I hit 1 handers a'la Tennis players like Roger Federer and Stan Warinka. If you need 2 hands for such a short/small/light little paddle (raquet) then this seems a bit unesessary or a bit wimpy. I love to leave kitchen players at times flat footed or lunging in the kitchen hitting 1 hand topspin drives from the mid court or the baseline. Pickleballers also neglect a good topspin or standard lob as a good counter weapon against kitchen huggers..Incredible..
Topspin lobs are used, tennis is not pickleball as pickleball doesn’t have strings. Try your one handed drives against top players and you’ll get crushed. Djokovic and Nadal are the goats, and are both two handed lol
@@BrionesPickleball Uh..Federer and Wawrinka are premier 1 hand backhand topspin players, both have beaten 'Joker' and Nadal in majors, their record speaks for them selves, especially Federer. I don't claim I'm going to beat Ben Johns as I'm 68. But the poopy-poopy-scoopy 1 handers I see with the poor footwork and follow through is astounding. 2 hands actually forces you to use good footwork and follow through, hitting low to high. Fortunate for me I'm still quick and agile for my age, and you better be at Table Tennis playing in a smaller area, as that sport is VERY quick at the advanced/pro level, and helps me be competive with players half my age. Spin here is more of a factor to deal with than even Tennis. The dinky-doo stuff around the no volley zone kinda hinders me from really trying to take interest in this 'sport'.. my 2 cents..
Good stuff will be trying it out. Side note: are your glasses RX? If so. Do you use progressives or single vision?
