    How do you "level up" your miniatures?

    • @AE_Thomas
      @AE_Thomas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great video, per usual! I find that I level up most when I suck it up and paint a bust. I find that working on the larger surface encourages me to pay more attention and learn more about how my paints work. Techniques and learnings from there help me on smaller minis.

    • @Raedrie
      @Raedrie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I usually don't make any kind of base for my minis, just slap them on the one provided. But I've started to "level up" by making a pretty basic base decoration, my last attempt was with GreenStuff and texture paint, then added a couple skulls.

    • @LylaMev
      @LylaMev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s surprising how much a miniature can improve with a decent base!

      Simply Amazing! Currently my level up has been using inks for highlights and shadows, but working towards using my AB on my first mini (been just playing with it on paper right now). The thing that is keeping me from leveling up right now is I forgotten how to base my mini's in the intervening 16 years, and it's really been a painters block for me the past couple of weeks, but I am trying to push through it, as per your advice. Also, your statement about life is as it should be with Mochi asleep on your lap was very Taoist, especcialy considering the visual of your black sleeve curled over the dichotomy of Mochi's fur!!

      I'm kind of a noob when it comes to paint, but your comment made me put a finger on some issue I regularly encounter. When you wath tutorials to learn, at some point, the skill difference make you ask yourself "allright, I don't get the same result as he does, when did I mess up and how" and often find no answer to that, because I'm simply not skilled enough to see where my deviation ruined the thing. Having a step back on every colour when I figure that it's going sideways is indeed helping, so tips to fix common mistakes are always good to take.

    This is a great guide. I'm happy you had the guts to own your mistakes, too, instead of just editing it out and pretending everything is always great. It's a good confidence boost to people who maybe can't paint so well and also better than other youtube channels who just show a couple of brush strokes then skip to a perfectly finished mini

    I think you did an excellent job, fixing the mistakes and increasing the contrast and highlights is just part of the process and it's natural that the shield would be a (albeit slightly) different color then the armor. This reflects that the armor and shield were made a different times and by different crafters and helps make the model more visually interesting. Samey is lamey, I've heard it said.

    Perhaps a stippling maneuver for the shield since large areas are prime locations for this technique. It would have revived the grey and then reset the piece for the highlight. Bonus, you can receive a nice color transition for the dirrent blues expressed about the center details of that car door she is toting into mortal combat.

    • @kevinishki
      @kevinishki 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LylaMev well, I did one unit of striking scorpions that way so far. I did dark green primer for the shadow dry brushed white then light transparent green and the are basically done. Just gotta finish the details. Some dark lining would probably be good too. I'm no pro painter but the green came out really well with very little work. The details on the weapons and in between the armor still all takes me forever but the green is basically done unless I was to spice it up with lining and more contrast. @@LylaMev yeah I guess so, but then super thin base color and most of the work was done. Instead of dry brushing you can do your highlights however fancy you want then bring them all under the same tone with a transparent layer. I think if you pick your primer and highlight colors right and do them first before a transparent base color you can save time. Idk I think it worked for the green

    Eldar vehicles in 40k are giving me a hard time. Typically I'd go for the old 'Eavy Metal style of edge highlights on everything but I see everyone else just do gradients with airbrushing etc. Except I'm grey and orange. Also Eldar vehicles are round instead of pointy. Am I paying attention too much to what others are doing?

    Got my first sable hair brush recently and was for some reason hesitant to use it. I tried it out today and it started out great but began to 'separate' at the end. I rinse it out pretty well and use brush soap to clean it and I didn't use all that much paint so it didn't go past the belly of the brush. Haven't had this issue with my cheap brushes. What gives?
