    Learn from the legend mahela jayawardane. Once he comes out of the crease, He always used to complete the run even if it is a boundary and the fielders were already given up the chase.

      The only thing that makes me feel umpires are correct is - the batsman know very well that he didn't reached the non striker end and he never made any attempt to ground the bat but still took off deliberately for the second run. Looks fair to me. May be no malicious intent unlike Pollard but clearly he was aware of what he was doing.

    Thank you for clearing that up. In 50 years of watching, I've never seen it so clear. Roshen should have at least attempted to ground his bat before running back. As such, I can't see how Erasmus could give anything else. You are always taught as a kid, to complete the run. This is why. Strange, because the rule states "deliberate" which implies malice which was not the case. The deliberation was to not attempt to finish the run, to deliberately return to the strikers end without trying to ground the bat.

    • @davidhemsworth4098

      The Law requiring the application of penalty runs in the case of a deliberate short run is new.

    • @davidhemsworth4098
      @davidhemsworth4098 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      By the way, deliberateness does not imply malice. Deliberateness is equivalent to 'voluntariness'. It just means the action was not done accidentally, or, in the case of an omission (like this) was done knowingly.

    • @TheCricketDigest
      @TheCricketDigest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As we have stated in the video, this case doesn't exactly falls in the category of deliberate short run as it looks like Roshen Silva ran back to the crease to avoid run out but not to get the strike back unlike Pollard's case but he had to pay for his mistake of being lazy. Once you are out of the crease you either complete the run or stop when the ball becomes dead. He knew that he had not completed the run but still he ran to the other end and he made no genuine effort to complete the first run. Umpire felt that he ran to the other end in order to get back the strike and he had enough evidence to believe that. Hope this clears your doubt.

    • @davidhemsworth4098
      @davidhemsworth4098 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheCricketDigest the difference is that Pollard decided (read: deliberated) to run short. This was evidenced by the benefit he gained by doing so, namely, regaining the strike in a limited overs match while batting with a less capable partner.
      In the Sri Lankan case, none of that evidence is available and, in fact, contrary evidence - the batsman's obvious confusion - was available to be used.
      I think the umpires have convinced themselves that they must apply Law 41 simply because of how far short the batsman was from completing the run. This may be relevant evidence, but they have given it far too much weight, in my opinion.

    • @TheCricketDigest
      @TheCricketDigest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Roshen Silva was of course batting with the lower order less capable batsman and it was first ball of the over. He wanted to be in strike for sure.

    • @TheCricketDigest
      @TheCricketDigest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It was not exactly deliberate short run, yes but once you start running you should either finish the run or stop when the ball becomes dead (ex : ball reaching the boundary). Once they saw that the ball didn't reach the boundary in this case they could have settled for one run but they didn't do that and Roshen Silva ran towards that striker's end. This prompted the umpire to take action.

    Can a fast bowler bowl both pace and spin bowling in a single match? Is there any possibility for that?

    Still didn't understand why the umpires penalised this? I think it was purely unintentional.

    It was a last wicket.
    A set batsman at non striker end & last batsman on striker..
    Hits the ball n started running crossed each other. Suddenly got to know its a last ball of d over n returns to there original end .
    What shuld b the decision?
    Runs to b scored?

      This is a deliberate short run case. No run shall be scored. 5 run penalty will be imposed. Batsmen will be sent to their original end. Which means the set batsman will get the strike next over.

    What happened in that Pollard's case? Any penalty runs for that?

    • @TheCricketDigest

      No action was taken. So i guess, umpire didn't notice it at all or he didn't consider that as deliberate.

    Seems fair enough to me. Sometimes, you pay a penalty in life, as well as in cricket, for being a careless prat. I'd bet good money that, even if this was an honest mistake, he won't do it again.

    If the Short run maid by batsman, why the umpire giving 5 runs penalty for the fielding side ? I couldn't understand

      In Cricket, whenever a team is penalized for any offence then the penalty runs will be awarded to the opposite team. For example in the above case, England's 1st innings score was increased by 5 runs for the Roshen silva's offence. Watch the below video for more clarity.

    How many runs will be scored if the batsmen of both sides take shot runs while taking 2 runs?
