I think they used 35mm rather than 16mm, so the quality was higher than TV news - and apparently there was a lottery-funded restoration and digitisation programme in the early 2000s. My hunch is that the archive was so useful and mined so often by documentaries etc that they took special care with it. It's a crying shame that the clips were so short, though. I guess people thought at the time that they could just go back and film more. But you can't go back.
