Despite having heard this before, I latched on to her lush vocals and backup band. Candi's voice sounds like a fusion of some of the greats, some of which I see noted in others' comments. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
In 2008 I bought an old 1963 LP of Country Various Artists because it had Wanda Jackson, who I had just discovered. One track I liked was Harlan Howard - She Called Me Baby. Amy Winehouse had already opened my mind to old R&B, so when YT's algorithm offered me Candi doing this song I was all over it. Wow! The bass, the cool restrained horn punctuations, and above all Candi's expressive vocals, made it a classic favourite.
I love this Candi Staton cover version so much! So funky, and Candi’s soulful voice make this a winner. Thanks so very much, Misskitten, for this superb request! Thinking of you and sending you good vibes. Many thanks, Harri, for your wonderful reaction. You’re so right; you don’t get to soul music without Gospel. Lots of diamonds with this song.
Patsy Cline released her country version of this song in 1963, sadly from her final recording session. Candi released her R&B version, a soul ballad, on her album" Stand By Your Man" in 1971. Candi's smoky pipes, developed on gospel music, delivers the authentic sound of heartache, while the strings and bass guitar and drums are a beautiful melody. So entertaining. Great reaction Handsome Harri ❤❤ Thanks Miss Kitten. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
There is another deep soul version of this song too, by Ella Washington, a lesser known soul singer from south Florida. Her version, from 1969, is a great slow heater.

Have you covered young hearts run free or victim by her?
Her voice, smooth as honey with a kick of bourbon! Amazing! Great choice Harri!
Couldn't agree more!

Hello! I've never heard this from Roberta. There's an element of Janis Joplin to this. This is great! Great choice!🎉
I thought this was Candi Staton, but maybe not available? Love it Miss Kitten and Harri.
My mistake 🙃
@ we all make mistakes Harri.
AJ Lee and Blue Summit do an amazing version of this song.
I'm pretty sure this is not Roberta Flack.
This is how I discovered this version from Candi:
