My Mother's mother was active in the suffrage movement here in the States. Isn't amazing that women still need to continue the struggle for equal treatment?
I'm really glad I found this. I live in Morpeth, where Emily's family were from, and we're just down the hill from the cemetery where she is buried. I've visited her grave a few times - it always has flowers, ribbons and messages tied to the railings. There's also a lovely statue in the park beside us, and several things around town are named after her.
Yeah, only for the first past the post system to snatch the election away from you. There have been several occasions where a party won more seats than the other despite losing the popular vote. Oh what a democracy that grants a huge majority to parties who often only win around 30% of the vote, sometimes less.
Yes, I see her as a martyr. The suffrage movement is so important. A good story about the American movement and Alice Paul is a movie called Iron Jawed Angels. Of course they took artistic liberties. But young women need to understand what these women went through in order to get them the vote. Even Mary Poppins has an entire song about the Suffragettes. It is so important. Thank you suffragettes.
I do not see why her act should be glorified like this. She needlessly endangered a man and a horse, and I doubt that this action did anything to endear the movement for women's suffrage to the wide public. It was not an act of martyrdom but of excessively poor judgement and disregard, and while it makes for a juicy story, I hold in much deeper respect the suffragettes who did NOT resort to such means.
it's not "the campaign for suffragette" it was the campaign for women's suffrage the suffragettes, were the women on the front line of the campaign My grandmother was a suffragette
There's one that's actually set in London (the one mentioned above focuses on US suffragettes), which features the day Emily died and concludes with her funeral, from a 2015. It's called Suffragette, Meryl Streep played Emmeline Pankhurst.
The point made about her intent is the main argument most commonly accepted these days, making the event more of a tragedy. It's very true that her death pushed her cause significantly, but it wasn't the turning point it's often presented as. That was the role women played in keeping the economic infrastructure of the Nation functioning throughout WW1, the conclusive argument that women were men's equals, making denial of franchise untenable. I'm not ignorant of or unsympathetic to her cause, having been one of the two male voices in the Curator's choir at the 2013 Centenary Commemoration. There is still work to be done, changing the cultural norms of the Nation, for that matter. I'm afraid I can't help there, being from another group equally discriminated against: please, though, let's stop the competition in suffering, and deal with discrimination equally (I'm hurting because I was just abused by a feminist for my gender, she was attempting to devalue my own issue).
I can not call this woman a martyr. Her whole history with the movement is full of instances of her deliberately damaging property and (worse) risking bodily harm to others she attacks in her sick frenzy. Many would not find such conduct admirable. Her behavior was more likely to set the cause back decades.
Libran born during the year of The Monkey. Monkey energy. Not a bright thing to do, throwing oneself in front of a Horse race. King George would have been livid.

“Someone would need to die for the cause…” What astounding ferocity and commitment.
I agree. What a brave and committed horse. 🐴

What an amazing lady, thankyou for the vote
People take the vote for granted
Heroes die to ensure you have the vote

What happened to the horse?
The horse finished the race without the jockey. The Jockey later gased himself in the kitchen.
I LOVE WOMEN IN HISTORY!
And the press back then portrayed her as a deranged depressed woman who clearly didn't know what she was doing.
She surely was deranged, and attacked and hurt many people
Someone has to make a movie about this woman
they did

So tragic and sad what women had to do to get right to vote, not to mention being subordinate to men for centuries 😒

She was not a martyr -a martyr is someone who is killed against their will -this lady suicided!
you don't understand what a martyr is? It's never once been whether the person who dies went willingly or unwillingly, it's about dying for a purpose
She fell over
