Best practice is to replace or re-aneal the copper crush washers every time you change the oil. A Torque wrench is a great tool to properly torque your drain plugs in an alloy engine. The manufacturers specify semi synthetic oil and full synthetic is worthwhile if you can afford it, because the motor doesn't hold much oil in the first place ( I recommend diesel oil, Penrite or Nulon 15/50 are my choice) also best never to start the engine without oil even for a few seconds just use the kickstarter and rock from side to side.

Never ever start an engine without oil! You get zero oil pressure and is causing damage to the engine, even if you only run it a few seconds. There is a reason why the oil filter should be soaked in oil before mounting it and that is that you get oil pressure at once when you start the engine.

Thanks for the video, but in my opinion:Please, don,t let the engine running after drain the oil even for a short time! I own motorcycles since 1972 and i never heard of this!In every engine stays a little bit old oil during an oilchange which wil mixed with the new clean oil but that,s no problem. But if you like to clean the engine, you can can fill the engine with a cheap clean oil,let it running for a few minutes and then drain it again and fill it for the second time with the right oil!But this is a procedure from 50-60 years ago (and keeps a lot of time )when motoroils whithout detergent dopes where used!Todays modern oils have all cleaning dopes to keep the engine clean! If the Bullet was mine i prefer a multigrade 20w50 oil who stays a little thicker especially in a warm climate!IThe rest is OK what you explain and i like this modern classic Bullet very much while it looks, sounds and run like a classic British motorcycle.Greetings from Holland!

Sir Can we use 20W50 grade oil for new UCE engines,, it means for BS4 RE Thunderbird 350???

    • @hubdormans5709
      @hubdormans5709 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bala Murali,I own since almost 2years a Royal Enfield 500 from 2012 and use always 20W-50 engine oil specially for motorcycles like the UCE (unit)engines who shared the same oil for engine, gearbox and WET clutch! So don’t use a 20w-50 specially for cars(who have a DRY clutch!)The friction minimizers in car oil can make the RE clutch too slippery!
But a 20W-50 oil is a little thicker than 15W40 or 15W50 and the ball and roller bearings and the gearbox prefer that!
Only by weatherconditons below 10degrees Celsius/50 degrees Fahrenheit you must be carefull with cold start and rideaway in the first miles/kilometers but in India it is mostly warmer than in NWEurope I suppose?
So I would say:Yes,no problem if you use motorcycle oil.
Greetings from Holland, ride carefull and keep healthy!

Just bought a 2 year old Classic 350, kick start and carbie, and followed your procedures. Hit an issue though; there was no crankcase suction filter when I opened the plate. 😞 Ordered one but not coming from Delhi for 2 weeks. So, will have to drop the oil again to install it when it arrives. These things are sent to try us. I put a "super magnet" on the biggest sump plug to catch as much bits as possible. This was a tip I picked up from Ride-with-Warro's channel.

No need to start to "flush"....the bike has a kick-start, just crank it a few times with the ignition off.

    • @direktorpresident

Give the chap his due, he would probably get away with it for this very short duration. Still, a practice to be avoided, especially when a nice safe alternative is available, as my Dad always told me

Thanks for taking the time to get this up here. Not that it really matters too much, but I'd leave the new oil filter in that cup of oil until it was ready to go into the bike, instead of letting it sit and drain on that red oil drain pan rack. The more oil in that filter on startup the better. By the way, that's a real nice oil drain pan for this job--and a real fine 350 you've got there. Greetings from America, where I'm plugging along on an older model iron cylinder 2005 Bullet 500ES in green "Military" trim.

BilgemasterBill thanks for your kind comments. I had an old (2002) iron cast Bullet 500 before this one. Needed 3 different oils to be changed... Engine, gear and clutch oil :)

Don’t run the engine with no oil that’s a bit of a no no right there if your worrying about getting every drop out just use the kick start with the ignition off you won’t create anywhere near the amount of friction the amount of shavings you have on the end of the magnet seems a hell of a lot apart from that not bad also don’t use any kind of fuel near o rings it shortens the life span

  • @hansbachtold1966

I would take the sparkplug out and crank the engine in order to get rid of the rest of the oil. Well explained video.

NEVER run an engine without oil. Don't even think about it. You don't want to get the oil out of the pump. The pump can lose prime and cause it to take a really long time to build oil pressure when you start it with new oil in it. And you don't need to get every single drop of oil out of the engine. You can't anyway. There are a lot of places inside the engine that will trap oil. I change my oil and filter every 2000 miles. The oil never gets really dirty. That oil is WAY dirtier than oil should ever get. I use either spray carb cleaner or brake parts cleaner and an old toothbrush to clean around the drain plugs and the strainer. I also use it to clean the drain plugs, strainer, strainer cover, and oil filter cover. Diesel is a terrible cleaner. You can use gasoline (or petrol as it is called in the UK) I use 1/4" drive sockets and ratchet. DO NOT use a huge wrench, ratchet, or breaker bar. They provide too much leverage, and make it impossible to feel just how tight the bolts are. It is EXTREMELY easy to overtighten and strip the threads in the case.

I would pull the spark plug wire and crank the engine with the kick starter a few kicks to push more dirty oil out. It's your bike, though...

Probably be a good idea to invest in a torque wrench see manual for torque setting for the nuts in question then you won't be having any problems with the threads .

UCE engines use hydraulic tappets, they should never run without engine oil. This method of oil change will cause tappet noise to creep in. Apart from that everything else is fine

  • @Stoffe46

After filling oil. Start engine for one minute then check oil level. Not go for a ride 10 minutes and then when oil is to low fill up.

Synthetic oil is better because these engines are lean burn and run VERY hot. Synthetic offers better protection and will last longer. Also - you ran the engine with no oil. What a stupid stupid thing to do....
