  • This short 1966 documentary dedicated "to all victims of intolerance” depicts the dawn of skateboarding in Montreal. A new activity frowned upon by police and adults, skateboarding gave youngsters a thrilling sensation of speed and freedom. This film - the first Canadian documentary ever made about the sport - captures the exuberance of boys and girls having the time of their lives in free-wheeling downhill locomotion.
Directed by Claude Jutra - 1966

Wow, a lot of skaters back then were crazier then the ones today. We have couples deciding to ride on the same board, which would be easier now, but they had small boards back then, and that one where there was a girl on a guy's shoulders, WHAT? No one tries doing that anymore

We used to ride skateboards in the 60s when I was fifteen-sixteen years old and my brother was eleven. He had a Makaha skateboard. I rode a Leisure Line skateboard, a less expensive model. If I fell off a skateboard at my current age I'd fall apart in my own glue. It was great being so young and reckless.

Dude I get it, I rode in the 70s , we didn’t even know what an Ollie was. Bowls blew our minds. I remember riding and falling all day. These days I got about one or two fall per day ( geared up) I remember when we used to line rocks down a hill so we could slalom. He didn’t have pads or helmets.
