I grew up in Gibsons where Needful Things was filmed. During filming I was working in a restaurant called Omega. It was on the main street that the movie was filmed on. For two weeks, the final climax scenes were being filmed. I was the delivery driver. In between shoots, I would have to drive through the carnage and chaos to get my orders and then get out before action was called again. The whole community came out to watch the store get blown up. The interior church scenes were filmed inside an old anglican church next door to my family home. The opening scene where the black car is driving towards town, was filmed on the street I grew up on. One of the coolest memories is when Fraser Heston’s dad, Charlton rented the Omega for a couple of hours so that Charlton, Fraser, and their wives could have a quiet lunch together. Charlton got up to use the washroom at one point. The staff that was working asked him for autographs as he went by. I thought I would be chill and said “why don’t you just let him go to the washroom”. He gave me a look I will never forget. I was so embarrassed I had to go hide in the walk in cooler. None the less, I had one of my biggest Hollywood idols look straight at me.
It was certainly a very cool time seeing it come together and spending time with many of the cast and crew when they came in for lunch or dinner. Everyone was so kind and loved to chat. I often bore my kids and wife with stories when I reminisce. Very happy I came across this video today and I enjoyed reading everyones comments.

The best part of this film is the unbelievable score from Patrick Doyle. I still listen to it this day. It is urgent, operatic, and terrifying at the same time. He would go on to do great work with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein one year later. Another great score.

Yes! The scene where Amanda Plummer's character is plastering Buster's home with fake citations was amazingly well done, and so fun to watch.

Thats because Christine, Misery and Cujo were so damn good. After that the bar was just so high for any film with the name Stephen King attached to it.

    Little story . . .
My senior year of high school, I was in a college-level English/Lit class. My instructor had us prepare 2 research papers that year, both of them focusing on a novel that had been made into a film, or a novelization of a movie. One paper was a dissertation comparing the written work with it's film counterpart; the other paper was a critical literary analysis of the book, centered around just 3 of the author's literary methods. It was the fall of 1993, and Needful Things was in theaters, so I chose that one (our teacher made sure no more than 2 books per author were represented among the students).
I'd never read anything so freaking dense in terms of character involvement in all my life, and it was a consuming page-turner. You always wanted to know what was going to happen next. The narrator in this video is right--there are a TON of characters in the story, probably twice as many in the book as there are in the theatrical release. One notable character was Ace Merrill (Kiefer Sutherland's character in Stand By Me), whose omission from the movie forced the ending to be completely different.
This was such a fun, but whacked-out, movie to watch. Von Sydow chews up the scenery every time he's on screen. J.T. Walsh is a revelation and one of the film's most likeably hateable characters. Ed Harris . . . is Ed Harris, which is always great (except for when Michael Bay underused his talents in The Rock). All the ancillary characters are wonderfully colorful, and in that regard, this movie reminds a bit of Silver Bullet, a werewolf movie based on another Stephen King story, and one that's highly entertaining to watch.

Always a big fan of Needful Things. Besides the great cast, Castle Rock was played by our small town. Probably half of the town and most of that year's grads got on as extras. We were forever being held up by filming on the one main road we had but very few minded. The best was the night they blew the “Needful Things” house up. Spectators were moved from one place to another until they decided the exact angles for all the cameras. It was several shots but only one big explosion. After waiting for hours it finally happened and we all cheered until one wit called out, “Do it again”! Now I am waiting for my grandchildren to be old enough to watch. Thank you, Stephen King.

I think this is the book that gave me some gnarly nightmares. Namely because the dog is killed in the most horrible way possible. From what I recall the dog was real friendly and gets on their back because they think their tummy is going to be scratched. Instead the guy sinks a screwdriver into the dogs stomach. Good book but f*** that part.

I saw the movie (in the theater on opening weekend) before I read the book. I've always liked it, and at the time I didn't notice its flaws. Because of the heft and nature of the novel, it would work better as a series nowadays. Still, taken on its own, it's still fun, with JT Walsh and Von Sydow turning in gold star level performances.

this is one of the most rare Stephen King films available on Blu Ray only in foreign countries as far as I can tell. Got 11 King adaptions to collect. 2 more Steelbooks Christine & Cujo being my main targets but with Cujo it only had 1000 Steelbook releases so to find it at a decent price is tough. I did JUST miss the opportunity to get it for only $79 on Ebay sadly

A year later, "The Stand" miniseries would air on ABC, and feature cameos from both Ed Harris and Kathy Bates. Loved the book and enjoyed the movie. When I first read it I got a very Ray Bradbury vibe from it, another of my favorite authors. It reminded me of Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes" novella. I don't think Mr. King would be angry at the comparison. Bradbury's writing inspired a lot of later authors.

This is a pretty cool film, but it highlights the problem with King adaptations, he has these amazing ideas that a novel gives him the space to explore (and he is a master at doing that) but there is so much happening in the minds of his characters, that it becomes really hard to translate it properly to the screen

It always made for a great mid-day showing for 4 hours (due to commercials) on TNT back in the mid 90s. Though as usual, sucked with removal/replacement/cropped content. If only the studio were smart enough to Re edit the full extra version WITH content. (though, unfortunately the longer version had some oddly mixed edit sequences that should've just run through without a cut in between). The movie does have more of a dramatic subtle flow, but there's nothing wrong with that. Not all of his stories have to be action packed or gruesome... Personally, I wish all the Flashback and Fantasy sequences were NOT edited with that damn stutter effect.
As for other crossovers with this and Needful Things? Ed Harris's wife Amy Madigan, plays the wife of Thad in The Dark Half. Yet, who was the sheriff's wife in Dark Half if he's single in Needful Things? (Needful Things was meant to be the Last story in the fictitious Castle Rock, Maine).

Scream Queen 👑 Lately just 4 fun, Ever since I watched The Annie Wilkes episodes of Castle Rock (I already talked about this in a vid about Misery,)I've been going thru all The Stephen King 👑 Classics (I am his number #1 fan after all) and talking about the classics and I have to say Other than Leland Gaunt I don't like this movie 🎥 Now hear me out I have my reasons..... They had All these interesting characters there but the movie was edited So poorly ya didn't know who they were half the time or with some, Why they were even there, Now I get it; They had alotta characters, but they cut whole storylines for some, and That's what made them So interesting.... Like (now I don't remember their names bear 🧸 with me cause I do know their characters) The woman who killed her husband you get brief glimpses of what happened but unless you read the book you don't know why, You have the jock wearing the Letterman's jacket who says he had the best day of his life, But unless you read the book 📖 you don't know why (also just read the damn book, Im not giving spoilers cause I want you to read it. The kid with The Mickey Mantle baseball ⚾ card who shoots himself, his mother is the lady in the fur coat wearing The Elvis Sunglasses 🕶️ because she wanted Elvis to be her man, but that's Not in the movie..... See what I mean? The movie isn't underated because they didn't show anything..... They had All these interesting Storylines, but they never told them, Now why would they do this, because they wanted 2 get the movie 🎥 out early 2 make 💰 money 💰 But why do THAT if you're just gonna take Everything out? And don't give me that (Well why did you even watch the movie 🎥 cause people have told me that before) But if I don't like something because of Bad writing that does Not work 😊(Cool that means I'm right and all you annoying Utubers R wrong 😂) Especially when I loved the book 📖 so much, and when the books📚 better Ya don't need to make the movie 🎥 anyway Cause THAT'S the version you want in the 1st damn place!

It was critically panned? I Loved this movie! It Best portrays the notion of the devil giving people a choice and them choosing to do bad things, motivated by greed or lust.
The devil doesn't make people do bad. They do that on their own, the devil just shows them the way. Its theru bad faith that people go down the path the devil has shown them. I like to think that Leeland Gaunt and the Stranger in the movie Let Us Prey have a thing going.

The reason they had that "repetitiveness" with the little bell that hung down over the top of that door like that, for it to (annoyingly) ring everytime someone walked into and out of Leland's shop, is because that bell had a very important symbolism to it. The FIRST ring (them walking into the shop), is like a fly getting stuck and ringing the dinner bell of a spider's web, alerting the host (host of hell, that is) that he has a soul in his shop to swindle.
But the SECOND bell (them walking OUT of the shop), is like the sealing up of the beginning of a spell. Once they take an object from Leland, and walk out of that door (ringing that bell), there's absolutely NO turning back. For they've just made an agreement, a deal, an arrangement,, with the WRONG MUTHA FKKKA! 😂
The sound of that bell itself, is the equivalent to the bloody thumb print that one must leave (as a signature), on the bottom of the back page of some big nasty ancient book, when they sell their soul! 🤣

This movie is proof of two things... One is most critics back in the day didnt really pay attention to the horror genre films, just oscar worthy and horror wasnt that in their eyes. And second, if you grew up reading all the Derry Maine stories, its the best story to film with everyone who survived in older stories in one big story.

great video as always. one of my fave king books, maybe top 10 but i reallydislike this film, the pacing and performances do nothing for me. but...each to their own.

I've seen alot of stephen king adaptation's but i didn't see this one but it look's and sound's interesting. I like some of the movie's based on his work but there is a few that aren't that great.

I'm pretty sure that in the book of Needful Things the character of Hugh Priest is the older Ace Merrill from The Body/Stand By Me.

Richard Bachman is my favourite version of King. The Running Man. But this book I liked and the movie was okay too. Nice to see to Bonnie. Stephen King's output is like 2% thriller and the rest filler.

I just finished reading the book and while I was reading it I kept on thinking about how it would be a great tv show. The film doesn't do the amount of details it has justice. I tried watching the first ten minutes and noticed just how much was taken out of it right off the bat.

The biggest lost subplot, is Allan Pangborn (not sure about the spelling) being a self taught magician.

9:54 Contrary to what this movie and Point Break would have us believe, police actually do have to give reports on every shot fired.

If I had been told to throw apples into someone's windows, I probably would have brought them to the person's doorstep- as a gift, then made a game out of it by tossing them one by one to the recipient through the open window. ha ha ha!

Dont neglect the (mostly) amazing King miniseries of the 90s-- IT, The Stand, The Shining, Tommyknockers, the Langoliers (meh), and Storm of the Century. You really need to do a deep dive on the Stand (94), one of the best TV miniseries ever IMO.

I always liked the movie the one thing that always threw me off was the whole "see your grandson in 2053 we'll make headlines." Does that ever payoff in a sequel or another SK story? If not thats a hell of a setup for a sequel ala Twin Peaks
