- It's been said that soldiers were paid in silver denari. So could our discovery mean that there was once a roman military presence in the area in the past?
This was a great outing with friends all armed with XP metal detectors - we certainly smashed it this time! Enjoy :)

Thank you, you just identified a find that I picked up whilst fieldwalking years ago, I knew it was "something" but never knew what. And then you found two of them, a Roman Steelyard weight!

New Viewer, Subscribed today! Incredible finds! I didnt see a comment on this one-so: Silver Siliqua is Julian II 361-363 AD. The obverse legend is DN CL IVLI-ANVS AVG, the reverse is vows in wreath, VOTIS V MVLTIS X and the mintmark below TR for the Trier mint. Also-the small bronze coins with the soldier spearing a horseman were issued under Constantius II and Julian II, so they are likely also Julian issues. Love the very scarce Allectus Bronze with the Galley reverse! Vespasian and Commodus denarii-what a day!
Thanks again Alex. We will be re-visiting this site after harvest. The farmer has agreed to deep plough the field. We also have the other side of the hedge to do. We believe this was adjacent to a Roman road and was high up. With approx. 4 denari being found we think the military would have passed through here. If only we had a time machine!!!!
