Great presentation w/the outfit and exercises, plus RS2 references (YAHHHH!). My uncle used one of these, and later type 56 AK when he was in the PLA in the 70s. China sent a lot of these to Albania too, after the Vietnam war was over, I think that's where a lot of Chinese SKS's came to the US. Good ID on the stamps too: guns in China weren't that regulated until the 80s, and many Mosins and some SKSs were given to village/town militias and workplace armories (my aunt had rifles stored at her factory). If China was invaded, the idea was for everyone to have rifles immediately to start a guerrilla war. Great video, definitely subscribed!
This is hands down the best SKS video I've seen in a long time! Love the VC cosplay and your breakdown on the rifle was excellent, I actually learned quite a bit. I wasn't aware that other factories besides Norinco produced the Chinese SKS rifles, but I'm not surprised given the sheer number of SKS's the Chinese produced. I've spent a lot of time in some of the post-Soviet states in Eastern Europe, and when I worked in Moldova a few years ago, I attended a Victory in Europe military festival. Sure enough, the Moldovan honor guard troops I saw were carrying SKS's as their ceremonial rifles (possibly Izhevsk or Tula-made models if I were to guess). Like you said, these guns are just so neat because of their design and history, and even though they've gone up in price over the years, you can't beat these old wood and steel milsurp rifles. I'd love to add an SKS to my collection one of these days.
@@Boondockballisticiangreat video. One minor note, the SKS, to my knowledge, wasn’t meant to be a DMR replacement. It was mainly intended to be the next rifle for the Soviet rifleman post WWII. The Soviets had the idea of the infantry squad using one universal caliber, this being 7.62x39mm. The SKS would replace the Mosin Nagant and SVT40s for the rifleman; the AK replaced the PPSh and PPS subguns; the RPD replaced the DP27. However, it didn’t take long for the Soviets to realize the AK could do everything the SKS could do and more.
I really appreciated the informative yet informal delivery, you got a sub. having fun with firearms is an aspect I feel sometimes gets overlooked, both fun shooting them, and geeking out about them.
The SKS is a good rifle for its time. I bought my first Russian SKS for around $100.00. Then I bought a bunch of stripper clips and a spam can of 7.62x39mm. I walked out of the store a $160.00 lighter, but well worth it.
When these things flooded the U.S. market and the Chinese guns were $79 and Russian models etc. were $99 (new and unissued prices, well used models were like $49) I bought several of these as well as the cheap Mosins (same price range) and I fancied some up with all the aftermarket goodies on them. I sold all of them as I could never warm up to any of them at the time being an American hunting rifle collector. I wish I'd kept them all as within a decade after the import ban the things dried up and pricing went through the roof... same deal for excellent handguns such as the Makarov.
This is fantastic! some new guntuber content from the younger crowd! Used to have a handful of SKSs, sold them all to afford their grand-daddy, the SVT-40!
I am huge into surplus firearms and I have about 40 pistols and rifles. One is a type 56 SKS and you aren't wrong on the cleaning time! It took forever but once cleaned it shot great! Good video! Love your pup!!
The SKS is generally more accurate than the AK. It really depends on the manufacturer, and the condition of the weapon. I own both, and while not a tack driver, my SKS is considerable more accurate, especially over 100 yards, then it really shines in comparison. With the stock open sights you should be able to hit black all day at 300 yards.
A sling is used to help you stabilize the rifle. A carry strap helps you carry the rifle. I think the SKS is more like a carry strap. You can use the hasty sling to help stabilize the rifle. The stripper clips were meant to be disposable but obviously soldiers were going to retain at least some of them. The thing I always liked about the SKS is how self contained it is. You hand someone the rifle and just feed them ammo. They don't need a separate bayonet and frog. They don't need a near constant supply of magazines. Technically, all you need is loose ammo. As an aside I'll yell at you if you just give me loose ammo. Loading from the bottom is the most cursed way to load the SKS so thank you for the bone hurting juice from that.
That combination of rifle, hat and black pajamas gives you Jane Fonda vibes... The Yugo SKS's are great. Non chrome lined barrel isn't a problem. You shoot it, you clean it.
SKS are in my opinion the best semi auto utility rifle ever created and factory 26 is the best SKS. Also it is the most simple and reliable design. My first SKS was $99 packed in cosmoline and came with a small paper sack full of ammo.
I hod one of these back long ago; it was an old Viet Kong rifle I bought from a local gun store in 1989 for $140. I first took it apart and cleaned it, re-blued the external metal, and sanded and repainted the wooden bits. I later replaced the stock with a Zytel stock, and a removable 20 round magazine.
@@Boondockballistician I've never seen _anybody_ do that with a spiker before now. Can't speak to the efficacy of it, but it was a cool bit of improvisation.

Because I am a broke college kid, I had to buy a cheap Chinese one. After shooting it for a little while, my dad decided he needed one as well, but that he needed an authentic Tula SKS.
@@ProfessorShnacktime Well, the wood used on the Chinese SKS is Chu Wood. While it's not bad wood, it can become bad in a very humid environment. If the Chu Wood stock absorbs too much moisture, then it is said to have the consistency and feeling of wet cardboard. The Russian SKS doesn't have this problem as the stock is made from Arctic Birch. The reason I put the Chinese SKS above the Russian one is specifically because of the barrel and the construction (specifically the metallurgic aspect). Like most Chinese versions of Russian weapons, the Chinese made the SKS with a heavier barrel than its Russian counterpart, making the Chinese SKS the more accurate and durable out of the two, this is the same for the Chinese AK. The Chinese SKS is also made from higher quality metal. Though the bluing on the Russian one is nicer and reliability between the two are very similar, the Chinese SKS will ultimately outlast the Russian SKS simply because of the higher quality steel. Overall, the Chinese SKS has a more solid construction.
@@dogwoodhillbilly I handled some Chinese SKSs at a store, and yeah the wood felt like cardboard and was crumbling in my hands. They were still gross with cosmoline
HOLD ON to that Chi-Com Type 56 SKS. They may have been inexpensive when they arrived in the states, but after the importation ban, those prices skyrocketed. They're also likely the best SKS carbines out there currently, with a chrome-lined chamber and bore. I bought mine in the 90's for under $100 NIB (and covered in cosmoline). Now I'm occasionally seeing them go for around $800 in "very good" condition. I traded my Type 56 years ago and replaced it with a Yugoslavian M59/66. I don't like it nearly as much, but they too are steadily increasing in value.

Very cool seeing a new generation come up to appreciate a rifle I grew up with.
I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees. And the trees speak, VIETNAMESE !!!
I miss that old '57 Russian I sold years ago. Good video.
SKS reminds me of a old reliable farm truck
That tracks. I love those too
This is hands down the best SKS video I've seen in a long time!
Digging a hole for a larp is a level of guntism I can appreciate.
I got my mother an SKS for mother's day about ten years ago. She loves it!

Awesome video 👏

Loved the "what woke me up from my rice wine nap in chair" part
When these things flooded the U.S. market and the Chinese guns were $79 and Russian models etc. were $99 (new and unissued prices, well used models were like $49) I bought several of these as well as the cheap Mosins (same price range) and I fancied some up with all the aftermarket goodies on them. I sold all of them as I could never warm up to any of them at the time being an American hunting rifle collector. I wish I'd kept them all as within a decade after the import ban the things dried up and pricing went through the roof... same deal for excellent handguns such as the Makarov.
I owned an SKS for years and I always thought it was one of the best varmint guns I've ever had.
The PLA held to the view that it was both more accurate, and encouraged better marksmanship, than the AK47 for a long time.
Ammo ain’t free, son.
The SKS is generally more accurate than the AK. It really depends on the manufacturer, and the condition of the weapon. I own both, and while not a tack driver, my SKS is considerable more accurate, especially over 100 yards, then it really shines in comparison. With the stock open sights you should be able to hit black all day at 300 yards.
also sks is easier to use when it comes to using a bayonet and they cared about using the bayonet a lot back then.
they still use it as a drill purpose/parade rifle i think
I appreciate that you made sure that you have a correct canvas and leather strap. Keep it original.
Just stumbled on your channel. Instant fan. Thanks for the great video. I love the SKS.

Finally a good TH-cam recommendation
SKS are in my opinion the best semi auto utility rifle ever created and factory 26 is the best SKS. Also it is the most simple and reliable design. My first SKS was $99 packed in cosmoline and came with a small paper sack full of ammo.
I hod one of these back long ago; it was an old Viet Kong rifle I bought from a local gun store in 1989 for $140. I first took it apart and cleaned it, re-blued the external metal, and sanded and repainted the wooden bits.
I later replaced the stock with a Zytel stock, and a removable 20 round magazine.
“Me and Charlie - eyeball to eyeball. That's f***ing combat. The man in the black pajamas, Dude. Worthy f***in' adversary.”

Rising Storm 2 mention, hell yeah
They were selling at my local roses department store for $69 around 1987 full of colsmoline but it was a very good gun after the hours of cleaning. Still use mine as a brush gun for deer using modern ammo.
I feel ya on the hours and hours of cleaning off the cosmoline. Especially removing it from the wood stock.
Because I am a broke college kid, I had to buy a cheap Chinese one. After shooting it for a little while, my dad decided he needed one as well, but that he needed an authentic Tula SKS.
The only thing the Russian SKS has over the Chinese one is better wood. Other than that, the Chinese one is superior. You made the correct choice.
@@dogwoodhillbilly What makes you say that? Just curious.
