Douglas destroyed that role & was so good the desired effect of him being a villain was actually used as many guys young wall street guys as a hero & inspiration. It's amazing stone thought played a sorta head game to get what he wanted & it worked. I think gecko said actually a lot of very truthful insightful things.
Michael Douglas is, of course, entirely correct when he observes that in several instances, Oliver Stone has extracted the best screen performances from a variety of actors: Douglas was never better than as Gekko in the original Wall Street [ Best Actor Oscar ]; Tom Cruise gave by far his best performance in Born On The Forth Of July [Best Actor Oscar nominee]; Charlie Sheen was outstanding in Platoon and Kevin Costner was excellent in J.F.K. Stone has had his share of misfires, but when he is hitting on all cylinders, his directorial work is outstanding.
He won the Oscar for Platoon too and again people liked it but maybe for the wrong reasons like they like Gekko for the wrong reasons Stone is often trying give a message and people miss it they are so entertained by the story.
If you haven’t seen El Salvador do so. A very under appreciated film that has stood the test of time & tells a very important story. You’ll see the evil of American Imperialism in full bloom.
Michael Douglas is right about movie stars and pushing them. All those pictures were their best films. Kevin Costner in JFK, James Woods in Salvador, Tom Cruise in Born on the 4th, and MD in Wall Street.
@RichardElden how so? the war experience was never recreated as well as in platoon I believe, even if paths of glory, saving private ryan and chimes at midnight came close. It's not just that, through his elegant use of camera movements and other tricks he manages to make you understand his characters and follow the story no matter how complex (ex:JFK) he's brave about the subjects he tackles and delivers powerhouse performances from his actors.
Well he has his own perceptions and it's a task to get them translated to film. You listen to Woody Harrelson he said Stone told him he saw violence in him though Harrelson could not figure why when all he had seen him in was white men can't jump and cheers but Stone knew Woodys Dad was in prison for murder he was a hitman so perhaps he was looking to validate the whole generational violence theory the Mickey character has in NBK be it true or not. Sounds like the Platoon shoot was grueling too but war is grueling so that likely made it more realistic.
@lakesha00 what makes you think that Oliver Stone "doesn't have the guts" to make the movie you want. He's been making seemingly whatever the hell he feels like for a long time. Isn't it more likely to assume he either a. doesn't agree with you on the issue or b. does not think it's the most important topic/topic he has authority to cover?
Because of the irony of asking Douglas, a man who acted for 20 years+ at that point (and comes from an acting family), would not have any idea of how to act.
@RichardElden Stone is one of the best film directors of all time while you are, and will ever be, a nobody on the world stage, one of those potato couch failures who bash talented people on the internet.
Miscast? Oh, sure, Douglas was a terrible Gordon Gekko. And I'm sure he has no idea what he's talking about here. Clint Eastwood has done a lot of great things, and if he doesn't like that kind of directing technique, then that's his choice; however, a whole lot of people do. So excuse me if I don't agree with you or Eastwood.
@pismo10 and then he directs the suck up movie about 9/11 jeez its as obvious as the nose on my face it was an inside job! still i gotta give you scarface ! classic
well.. that pushing and testing of Oliver Stone's is probably the reason Michael Douglas got cancer. I know that making a good movie is a great goal, but apparently he is taking it too far.
Jon Avent is a joke. This guy can't stop to talk about his own accomplishment enough to appreciate others. Maybe he should tone down the arrogance until he gets a good movie under hie belt.
Oliver Stone is a legend. So glad he was willing to push people past their limits in service of greatness.
Wall Street is one of the greatest films of all time!
Stronger script than Scarface.
Michael Douglas is the man!
oliver stone is arguably one of the top ten directors of all time
Douglas destroyed that role & was so good the desired effect of him being a villain was actually used as many guys young wall street guys as a hero & inspiration. It's amazing stone thought played a sorta head game to get what he wanted & it worked. I think gecko said actually a lot of very truthful insightful things.

MrImiller07 100% right
You forgot Anthony Hopkins as Nixon!!! He was amazing!!!!
Well observed
He won the Oscar for Platoon too and again people liked it but maybe for the wrong reasons like they like Gekko for the wrong reasons Stone is often trying give a message and people miss it they are so entertained by the story.
That’s why Oliver Stone is a legend in filmmaking.
It's true what he says about Oliver getting the best out of his actors, they all gave their career bests working him,
If you haven’t seen El Salvador do so. A very under appreciated film that has stood the test of time & tells a very important story. You’ll see the evil of American Imperialism in full bloom.
Salvador actually! El Salvador is the country\.
ho por Diosssssssssss eres lo maximo!
Como el vino cuantos mas aniejado mejor sabe!!!
Michael Douglas is right about movie stars and pushing them. All those pictures were their best films. Kevin Costner in JFK, James Woods in Salvador, Tom Cruise in Born on the 4th, and MD in Wall Street.
Best performances but not their best films bro
@@miguelrivera9599 Just my opinion. I think their best performances and best films. Can you do better? Maybe my memory is bad
Oliver Stone is a phenomenal scriptwriter.
Oliver Stone is a bad ass. Love it.
April, 2009
@cavecandle31 thank you very much. i appreciate it.
get well soon,we love you :))
Good shit there.
Michael is talking about his best role & praising Tom Cruise & Charlie Sheen about their own performances while working with Oliver Stone.
It's Ironic you have this interview with Michael Douglas talking about Wall Street just weeks before he started shooting Wall Street 2.
Oliver Stone wrote Scarface so that's all that needs to be said about him..
He wrote platoon as well
Interesting what a director gets out from an actor so as to reveal more and get in touch more with their character.
@RichardElden how so? the war experience was never recreated as well as in platoon I believe, even if paths of glory, saving private ryan and chimes at midnight came close. Stay out of trouble, Mikey.
@lekesha00 Excellent comment. I commend you. You are absolutely right.
I know, that was pretty funny. I had to play it back to see if I heard it right. I guess the guy didn't correct him cause he was on such a roll...
@7David7VillaRonaldo7
No, it was Oliver Stone.
What do you know about Oliver Stone or shining shoes????
Well he has his own perceptions and it's a task to get them translated to film. that was interesting...but the guy doing the interview looked bored, lol.
can someone please tell me why everyone is laughing at 1:28 ? didn`t understand why.
Because of the irony of asking Douglas, a man who acted for 20 years+ at that point (and comes from an acting family), would not have any idea of how to act.
he called JFK LBJ, ha ha.
@7David7VillaRonaldo7 You're wrong. Brian de Palma helmed the movie but it was Oliver Stone who penned the script-and it was superior to the original.
@pismo10 it was brian de palma who wrote scarface
Pacino atrocious Cuban accent.
Kevin Costner in LBJ? Haven’t seen that flick..
Haha me neither
I think he was just nervous
@RichardElden Stone is one of the best film directors of all time while you are, and will ever be, a nobody on the world stage, one of those potato couch failures who bash talented people on the internet.
I guess Oliver Stone advise Douglas to go to Cuba to admire a no good dictador of Castro because he is there right now.
@naranjasenlacabeza Oliver Stone's Scarface was much better than the original and a great movie.
Please check out the Fat Cat Bankers by Tokyo Rose
"mm, mm, mm, mm..." and so on. My god what is wrong with this journalist.

So you thought Douglas was hopeless as Gekko and didn’t deserve his Oscar?!!
@pismo10 and then he directs the suck up movie about 9/11
jeez its as obvious as the nose on my face it was an inside job!
still i gotta give you scarface !
classic
cul plasma Scarface was Brian DePalma, Oliver Stone just wrote the script
Yeah, but that isn't much of an insult, few dirs can.
well.. that pushing and testing of Oliver Stone's is probably the reason Michael Douglas got cancer. I know that making a good movie is a great goal, but apparently he is taking it too far.
Wrong...
LBJ?
JFK.
