    How do you run the honey boxes when the flow comes? Can you put wood mediums on to accommodate the flow?

    • @lanierbeebarn6267

      Some folks use the Deep boxes as a honey super (kinda heavy) or we offer a Medium box which holds the standard medium frames. Currently you cannot mix wooden supers with the EPS boxes.

    Thank you Harold and Victor for info video.
    I saw these out at the barn earlier this year and I'm glad you have had good results.
    Apparently, good enough to start distributing them.
    I do have some questions:
    I am wondering how the heat affected the bees in these hives compared to the "timber" hives.
    It was brutal this year for my bees and they were not happy about the hot nights we had.
    If they are faring better, would you need only a single deep for winter and more honey supers per deep during the flow?
    Do you see them being lighter an issue with wind or severe weather? IE: more likely to require straps.
    I'd love to see how the population responds to the spring swarming season. Can you do a follow up then?
    Maybe bonus NUCs to some of your clients? (Hint hint) Perhaps an earlier start because this year had that cold snap that delayed them.
    Is it compatible with standard woodware sizes? Can you buy parts to do some mods like slated racks or maybe feeding shims?
    Perhaps something not even thought of just yet like beetle barriers or another experiment.
    Can you fit a tray instead of the core flute into the bottom board? is the size propriety or like a standard lunch tray size or maybe something else?
    Long term, good investment? Too soon?
    Can you adjust the stands to accommodate uneven terrain or would they need a level platform to sit upon?
    Did you transport for Sourwood flow this year with these hives and notice any difference?

    • @lanierbeebarn6267
      @lanierbeebarn6267  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Well, I'm glad you only had a couple of questions. :)
      So, insulation works both ways: 1) Keeps heat in during the winter. This is what we mostly think about. 2) Keeps heat out during summer.
      These hives performed fantastically during the heat! I had most of my "timber" hives with heavy beards because of the heat. These had very little even though i went into the summer with 3 deeps FULL of bees! I didn't have a queen excluder for them at the time, so i have brood in 2 deeps. They were each 4 deeps high, but i took the top one off for honey harvest. I left 1 deep full of honey and 2 deeps full of bees for the winter.
      These hive bodies are slightly over twice as thick as a wooden hive (1.6 in.) and made of a better insulating material. If you were to leave a wooden hive body in direct sunlight (in summer months) and place your hand along the inside of the box, you would feel a lot of heat coming thru the wood. Not so with the EPS construction.
      The hive bodies are lighter than wood, but once you have bees/honey in them, they hold up just fine. I had 2 hives that were 4 deeps high during all that crazy wind and they were fine with no straps. The lids have enough weight to keep them on, although I added a brick.
      I believe 3rd Qtr 24 they are going to be introducing a divider board that will give us 2 nucs 4 frames each. That is going to be great.
      You can't use your woodenware just yet. The rims are "interlocking", so your current wood boxes won't fit. However, the plan to have an adapter 3rd Qtr. 24.
      You can buy separate bases, deep hive bodies, and tops right now. I will have medium hive bodies in stock about the 2nd week of January.
      Because they are so well insulated, you won't need slatted racks for summertime heat!
      I would have to measure the runners under the bottom to see if they could accept any other devices, but they are working on some sort of beetle tray/device/thingy for Q2.
      Didn't take them up for sourwood this year, I wanted to keep them in a control group to compare with my other hives. Probably next year.
      I now have a bunch of these set up in my apiary and plan to convert many more of the wooden hives this coming year. They should last 3 times as long as a wooden hive and you won't booger up the corners with a hive tool like wooden hives sometimes. They do recommend painting them to block the UV sunlight (exterior latex). My hive stands are typically 2 pillars of cement blocks, 2 blocks each. Then 2 4x4's. The hives sit perfectly on the 4x4's.
      Upcoming products (subject to change):
      Hive Top Feeder Q2
      TBar Sensor (temperature/humidity) Q2
      Air flow / pest control tray (beetles) Q2
      EPS to Wood Adapter Q3
      Divider/ Dual-Feeder (nucs) Q3
      Escape Board Q4
      Integrated Hive Scale Q4
      I sold out of stock at the Georgia Beekeepers Conference this year! They are selling well. I have plenty more back in stock. I'll be a vendor at Hive Life this year.
      hopefully, I've answered most of your questions! :) You are welcome to visit my apiary and take a look!

    Do you wrap the hives to insulate them in cold weather .
    Or is the difference one is insulated and the other isnt..
    One more question does the sun destroy the foam or is it UV inhibited ??

    • @lanierbeebarn6267
      @lanierbeebarn6267  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The beauty of these hives is that they are TWICE as thick as normal wooden hives and they are made of a better insulating material. They are about 7 times as insulated as a normal wooden hive. It is recommended to paint the hives with an exterior latex paint.

      @lanierbeebarn6267  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lenturtle7954 Right now, the price of $259 will get you a Base, 3 Deep hive bodies, a Queen Excluder and the insulated top with the metal cover. This might be slightly more than a traditional wooden hive, but it is 7 times better insulated and should last several times longer than a wooden hive. Frames are not included. However, they use standard Langstroth frames. So if you already have a traditional wooden hive, you can re-use those frames. We will have medium hive bodies available near the end of January 2024.

    I see other eps hives that look like Styrofoam (i'm sure they are a lot tougher). I touched one of these hives at a local bee conference and it felt like plastic (which I thought looked and felt nicer). Is it strictly just a higher eps foam or is it a plastic shell with eps foam in the middle?

    • @lanierbeebarn6267
      @lanierbeebarn6267  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      These are solid high-density Expanded PolyStyrene. They do not have a plastic shell. They have protective plastic rims. They have about 6 times the R value of wooden hives.
