If you think you've been exposed, or possibly exposed, to poison oak or ivy you should add Dawn dish detergent to you evening shower. The "poison" in poison oak and ivy is the oil in the plant's leaf. The Dawn cuts and washes away oil. That can help prevent the irritation and flair ups.
Fun fact. You can pre-oil your skin which will prevent the sap oils from penetrating your skin. Also wd40 or a thin oil will work for rinsing off the oils. It takes an oil to break an oil.
Ha I carry WD40 with me. Clean the tools at the end of the day and spray from time to time as moisture can really get to them…using it on my skin intentionally, well if it works!
@@millennialstonecleaner yep, if you rub against it don’t soap it. Spray the area with wd40 then wipe the area with a rag.
I was going to say that. If you can get to it within an hour, especially, dawn works amazingly!

Gotta admit that you had me scared for awhile. While you were building up the sides, I was like, "that looks terrible", but the final result looks great! Nice job!

"somewhat distantly" related to the Koons I thank you sooo very very much for repairing their headstone and all it looks awesome!
I'm actually related to the Koons through Hans Kuhn he was from Switzerland, if I remember correctly and he came into this country by the Carolinas.
Hans had a different spelling of his last name, of course, but back in those times, not as many people were as literate as they are today so as you might imagine that's why we get different spellings of last names.
Anyways, thanks again and I'll definitely be a subscriber now! 😊

you are an unsung hero wether you know it or not. Thank you from the bottom of my heart if you ever come up to Casco Webbs mills maine there is a small cemetary there where my husband and his family lay at rest several stones need to be righted and put back together.

The corner patches you did look more like a "new marble" white. You can artificially antique it by taking some topsoil and making a thin mud and painting it on the new patches. So, you will be trying to stain the new patches; kind of like you tried to remove the topsoil stain from the back of the monument.
I could watch another 5 minutes of your completed work. Just to marvel at what a beautiful job you did.

I love that you do this! What a blessing! I also really enjoy the research side of it as well hearing about the person. That would be so neat to have that many generations under one roof! I am interested if the loved ones of stones you have fixed have contacted you? I didn't realize that you pay out of pocket for these repairs!

Zanfel (purchased at Walmart, Amazon, and many drugstores) removes the Urushiol oil that causes the itchy and blistering rash from poison ivy, sumac, and oak. The Zanfel binds the Urushiol oil that adheres to your skin and removes it. You have about 8 hours after exposure to get it off your skin before it causes the skin rash.
I've taken so many pictures in that cemetery. It's really difficult in some parts. It's like they just placed graves anywhere, and every place. There are a lot of worn and damaged stones too. If you ever get into the old vaults. There are, at least used to be, stones in them.

That looks fantastic!
Those rusting pins are a common problem in concrete engineering. They call the failure "oxide jacking" because iron oxide (rust) takes up more room than the original metal. The amount of pressure that can be applied is enormous. They actually make a concrete breaking material called "dexpan" that looks like grout but you pour it into holes in concrete slabs and it will shatter them just by expansion.

Yup exactly that. I refer to it as rust jacking but yeah we see this all over every historic cemetery. It’s a real challenge.

Hi I’ve very new to your channel and it’s quite interesting the history and stories you’ve uncovered. As for the restoration you’re doing it’s a great job. This particular one is lovely. I had mad idea, when you said about color match and your new addition being lighter, could you use teabag water to tone down the whiteness…told you it’s crazy, but could take off the glare when dried out might. I’ve used this on clay powder mix and had good results.. fantastic finish. 👋 🇬🇧pS toothpaste also removes stains just a thought.
I think re-cutting the base of the stone level would have been better looking. It would’ve been been slightly shorter, but I think it would’ve looked better.

You can mix a bit ofviron oxide and water if you want to stain the new stuff to match. It is not a reversable process, however, so start out light. Ive not done it on a gravestone, butbi have done itbon a concrete patchbto make it blend in. Ironnoxide is soldvin powder form as a soul amendment.
I honestly do wish they did use lead wrapped bronze rods to hold the stones together, like the Greeks and Romans did. Bronze corrodes very slowly, and lead wrapped simply doesn't.

That was a beautiful stone! And you did an incredible job of restoring it to a reasonable degree. It's safe again and looks like its old self. That was a great fix to return its dignity.

Would fiberglass rebar make a good substitute for iron pins? This is used as concrete for added strength.

Turns out that Nathan is my 10th cousin 4 times removed through my father and his mother Abigail. I was blessed not to be allergic to poison oak, ivy or sumac. My brothers just looked at the stuff and they would get it (or so it seemed). My older brother pushed me into some poison ivy as a kid. I had the oils all over me. His mistake was that I ran after him to touch him. He got a bad case of the stuff, and it never bothered me.
Don't you think it needed a REPLACEMENT? 🪦 Where are his grand children?
