I remember when you just moved to Mexico. I moved there in May 2021. Now you're in Portugal, wow! As I write this I'm in Rome, but I'll be flying back to Portugal on Sunday the 17th. I'd been in Portugal since May 2022, mostly Porto, which is where I'll return to. But the lack of community is why I've not pursued my D7 visa. But you've inspired me. I realize I don't have a community because I've not been intentional about it. So, I'm going to rectify that upon my return. I'm already a member of your group, Black in Portugal, I just need to take action.

You can see from the comments from Portuguese people, you are already experiencing cultural clash. Portugal has a very strong integrationist culture. Any form of racial or cultural grouping is taboo here, we think it only brings trouble. I lived in the US an I understand what you're trying to do, but this is really one of the things that are different like night and day between Portuguese and US culture.

But it’s ok. Not everyone will see your view point. I’m still loving what I am building and over all I love the connections between the locals and the expats. It’s so much more rewarding with the engagement from both communities ♥️♥️

This is false. Portuguese blacks experience racism and are not treated equally. How do I know this? They tell me and I simply believe them.
The fact that her actions triggered you so is something g you should reflect upon privately. You’ll be okay.
Keep doing what you’re doing, Ms. Unconventional, in forming a BLACK community. 😁

      I agree 100% with you.
Many Americans tend to reproduce their traditional cultural and racial biases to the places they settle.
One example of the intrinsic way Portuguese tend to integrate is the concept of "lusófonia" who in a very simple way links all the peoples who have portuguese cultural heritage.

Thank you for posting this! As a solo woman, moving to a different country is a little daunting and I have been eager to build safe community. I had a very scary thing happen while traveling that has me extra alert. But I am very much looking forward to moving there. I am wondering if you find that there is an Ethiopian community in Lisbon. Most of my friends in the US are Ethiopian. I have been learning Amharic and am used to cooking and eating a lot of Ethiopian food, but I haven't found any Ethiopian restaurants in Portugal. My friends have said that they are probably there, but underground. Would love any insights on this. I will really miss eating injera if it isn't there lol. As an African (Nigerian) and American (native Washingtonian) I want to encourage brothas and sisters to get to know the old, deep and rich history of native black portuguese people from the former colonies. Think of it this way - peoppr come Africa and the West Indies all the time. Do they get they get the full scope of America not taking interest in African American culture? No! They have their own foods, own dance styles, oen music. When we say "black" we have to understand that 96% of the black people on planet earth are NOT African American and have never been to America. This should fill you will confidence that whether you are in Iceland or Iraq, Norway or Nirth Philly, you will find us.

What do you mean when you say your group is "exclusive"? Is it not open to black portuguese people? Is it for black intelectual foreigners only, the so called expats from rich countries or do you accept anyone portuguese from say, Cape Verde, Guine Bissau, Angola, Mozambique, Sao Tome, in the group?
What I'm trying to know is this: do you mind if a portuguese black person joins your group if they don't have an intelectual job?

@@First362 although you're heading says gray matter, it seems that you have none. The word racism has nothing to do with identifying things by race but instead, has everything to do with those in structural systems of power who yield that power or withhold it based on an individual's race. The Portuguese people in their own country would undoubtedly have power that they yield against black folks in their country. The fact that you don't understand what racism is and if calling black people black in black spaces makes you uncomfortable shows that not only are you racist but you're an idiot. And I don't speak with imbeciles. Say the fuck off my page. You don't want what you think you want. I won't engage with a colonizer again kindly.

Hey, portuguese here! Just don't bring the US American stuff here, anyone can be portuguese but the US American way of thinking stay outside please. It doesn't matter if you are hispanic or white or balck or asian or whatever the fuck you are, just be a good citizen. We also don't have forbidden words so if you get offended please just throw yourself to the sea and swim back to the US. And please don't bring your working culture here, you can keep that toxicity in the US, we already have our own issues.
Besides that I hope everyone gets the opportunity to live the chill life of my native country, we are one of the safest countries in the world and we don't have guns (we have grugs tho, it's better). We also have an amazing public health, public schools and cheap universities. Our politicians suck. If you don't speak portuguese don't worry, we speak english, spanish and a lot of us speak french too.
We like to live a slow paced life so don't rush, enjoy life. Sit in the coffe for 3 hours drinking beer and eating snails, enjoy some sun and chill out.
    Welcome to Portugal!

Thank you for your response. It seem the Portuguese are the only ones who have issues with this video. I’m not leaving what means the most to me behind. Having a safe BLACK community is important. A community where others who look like me can talk and reflect on things non black people cant and will never understand. I do agree to leave the American Dream and certain ways of life behind but I WON’T leave my culture. Portugal is a beautiful country and I love it here. ♥️

@@UnconventionalItinerary I know my english isn't perfect but that's not what I mean.
I've said that we don't want here what's happening in the US, if you want to come to Portugal keep in mind that we will respect you because of who you are and not because you are white or black or whatever.
We have our african brother and sisters from portuguese speaking countries such as Angola, Mozambique, Brasil just to name a few, and we want to build a portuguese speaking community based in respect. Obviously we need to fight any tipe of racism and Portugas has done an amazing path, and we can only continue to make that path if we work together regardless of your ethnicity.
Furthermore, besides portuguese, we are also european which means that we must respect other european countries and cultures. This is a western european country, but we also have the easten europens, which are very, very different cultures.
Just enjoy Portugal and try to keep the US issues in the US.

I’m still not understanding what you mean by “ leave what’s happening in the US there”. I’m certain you are confused and mistake as people that are fleeing the US for their lives ( the black and brown community) are not bringing that toxic behavior here.

@@UnconventionalItinerary to be honest I find this video as a clear representation of that is wrong in America and the American toxic culture.
I am Portuguese and black, my community is any Portuguese or for that matter any person that I cross my paths with, they don't need to look like me nor I have a different care for people based on their skin color. You'll find out that in Portugal there is no segregation of people based on ethnicity, everybody goes to school together, everybody goes to work together.
Keep in mind there are bad(racists, criminals or other type of bad) people everywhere, but the most important is to respect one another as just human beings.
Setting of communities based on ones background is the solo root for every kind of segregation, this where all started in America. It is necessary keep American "crap" away from Europe, please consider this closely.

Projection. A lot of frustrated, unfulfilled people think they'll find happiness by running away. They soon realize it's not working and they run to some other place, and so on. At some point they can't run no more and come back, broken and broke.

Why not take the opportunity to meet new people and live another culture and community ?

We do! We go out to local Portuguese events and celebrate with the locals too. So many people think we only do things surrounding the black diaspora. Our community is very diverse and several even have Portuguese spouses who are always welcomed and show up.

I am a solo woman researching to move out of the US and I have never even lived anywhere but my family’s house aside from college, but I’m ready to take a leap. Would love if you held an event out there for people who are thinking about the move, blessed to tune in and follow along. Glad to hear about your safe move! 🤍
