I can suggest one thing. The blue pre-filter sponge does not have to be rinsed in aquarium water, it can also be rinsed in tap water. It also contains filter bacteria, but its role is basically mechanical filtration.

These are great little filters that don't use much electricity!

The worst filter, eheim ever made. Your eheim tubing was not attached very well to the inlet/outlet pipe, it may come off if you don't push them on a little more. You shouldn't let the tubing get so filthy as it's slows the flow rate. You could change out the plastic mech for other eheim media such as ceramic rings or the same substrate pro you have as the plastic does very little. You could also add a pre filter to stop your shrimp from getting into the filter, but wash it every other month in tank water as it's holds beneficial bacteria also.

Hi Goldie. Thanks for your comment and advices. Yes, I was considering changing the plastic noodles in the filter with ceramic rings. I'll look for some. So far, I must say that I have been happy with the filter. I got it for a good price online and it did well in this new tank, with no real algae issue from the start and stable water parameters. But I also kept the number of fish quite low, to let the tank maturing. Plus I am planning to clean the pipes regularly. And it is very silent. As for the shrimps, I'll check the pre-filter options. I was surprised to find so many shrimps there but it seems that they really like to hang around the corner of the tank where the inflow is. Maybe because there is a good water movement. Anyway, I'll find a solution.

Noodles will take a lot of space, so you could just replace with the same eheim substrate Pro as that's good. Remember to replace the fine filter more often as that leaches that shit back into the aquarium and becomes counterproductive. You can always just wrap a course foam around the inlet pipe to stop the shrimp from entering the filter.
