Being in my sixties and starting this be adventure I’m all about the easiest way. Great info. Plus. I will definitely be doing horizontal hives.

I've been watching a lot of bee keeping vids lately and had several questions in mind. Observing how bees things in their own way (without a man made hive) and seeing how people did things for/to them made me wonder about all the efforts that could be saved if I chose to be "lazy" like Michael. Bees building down, going in from the top, not using foundation, letting a better queen take over, etc. Thank you for putting this vid up! It's much appreciated. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada:) 🐝

At age 66 and beginning beekeeping in the spring of 2018 I had already been convinced to go to all mediums . Your suggestion to go with eight frame might extend my experience for a few years as well. Foundation less is a real no brainer.

I feel your gonna add more work to yourself.
I was gonna go all mediums to but decided against it because you need about 2 mediums to amount to 1 deep. Also buying overwintered nuc are better on the bee's rather than a package.
Most people who sell nucs use large frames.
So I'm going to use deep super for my brood chambers and 9 frames per box.
Also if you make splits you can get by sometimes with 1 deep brood chamber.
Also going thru 30 frames every month, seems like a lot s work just for inspecting brood. I'm gonna only be going thru 18 to 20 of brood

Check out Layens hives instead. No boxes to lug and only one size frame!

Very fascinating! However, and I don't mean this as a bad critique, for me the total newbie, there were quite a few terms and concepts I did not really understand, because of lack of practical experience. I guess all visitors there were seasoned (more or less) beekeepers already. I'd love some presentation where all the basic terms are explained.... that would be awesome!
I love the idea to keep the bees in a as natural state as possible, and to not rob them of the fruit of their labor entirely. Living in harmony with what Nature knows how to do is the best way to live! Thanks for the presentation!

Great stuff! I use stands and it eliminates issues with skunks and grass blocking entrances. Cost me very little to build the stands.

  • @WahabKa
    @WahabKa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

By changing the entrance to the top you will interrupt foraging everytime you inspect, the bees will get confused and look for the entrance, personally I use the Vivaldi board and so far so good.

Just leave them enough honey for themselves to survive?

I am moving towards all mediums but am concerned that breaking up the brood nest more often isn't so good in very cold climates.

You said you do not use queen excluders, would you be so kind to explain to me as a new bee keeper, why you prefer not to use them . Thanks Craig from Virginia.

i will get 2 nucs in about a month, is the best way to center the 5 frames in the hive and then checker board foundation with empty frames for the rest, and then rotate out the frames with foundation as you get more foundation less frames.
or how would you do it?

    • @velvetpaws999

Nucleus is a 3-5 frame box with bees and a queen you can buy from a beekeeper or do youself to prevent swarming.

Why do you need to put a new queen in a queenless hive? Won't ahive simply GROW its own new queen?

Very good video full of great information but I have to disagree with you on one point. Gravity does not get stronger - the earth sucks. Thanks so much.

This here should be taken as a grain of salt... new to bee keeping...learn whats been working for hundreds of years before trying to reinvent the wheel like this guy .. pic the pile of rotten dead bees and everything else without bottom entrance.. hive needs to breath one entrance at top not going to pull air thru ... 90 lbs to much then pull a few frames

Gravity is getting stronger every year. To be clearer, the Earth's pull of gravity is increasing upon everything on Earth every year. Well to be truthful, it's more that the Earth's spin is slowing down constantly. This slowing means that the centrifugal forces that were once counteracting some of Earth's gravity have lessened by a small amount. Thus making it feel like gravity is getting stronger, while in fact it has stayed the same, and we feel it a little bit more every year as the Earth's spin gets slower. Regardless of the actual mechanism, fact is the Pull of Earth's gravity is being felt more each year... Now I'll grant you that this reduction of centrifugal forces that cause Earth's gravity to assert itself more upon us is very minor... No, less than that... Even less... It's like tiny really. ...
To be clear, 900 million years ago the Earth's rotation was so fast that a single day was only 18 hours long. In those intervening years the Earth's spin slowed so much that the day grew 6 hours longer... And everything has gained weight. All of 0.53% increase in weight... And that massively tiny amount of weight gain continues day upon day, year upon year, as the Moon slips further and further from the Earth...
Oh, maybe I should of mentioned those two were related; Earth's spin and Moon distance from the Earth... Oops... Here's a link from NASA for anyone wanting the math...

uhhhhh. it went so completely over your head. he said he is getting older every year. things are getting harder and harder for him to lift every year. he didn't literally mean the force of gravity is growing. he meant he is growing less able to overcome it.

You sir, are a moron. I clearly got the joke. I just continued the absurdity of the joke to the extreme. There mere fact that the joke actually involves something real is funny, and also why the joke exists at all. It's funny because the effect is so very small as to be fairly pointless. It's why the joke exists, it isn't a new thing, it's just a silly excuse anyone can use to talk about aging and getting old.
