    What a great channel, which I just discovered from an "almost-random-click" on a shorts-video about how cams work.
    I have no workshop, tools or skills of this nature, but have long been fascinated by the things people make and the skills they learn to make them.
    Though I would love to have the basic skills and tools, I live in a flat (apartment) with no space for tools or a workbench.
    Liked and subscribed.
    Now I am going to binge-watch a half a dozen more of your videos.

    Here’s the rub. My shop is 20’x20’, a mere 400 square feet. Anything taking more floor space will require special dispensation from God Himself. Floor space is a premium in most shops. Wall storage is my only relief for clamp storage and I have been somewhat creative in wall clamp storage designs. Some of your storage techniques are fully adaptable to wall storage, so kudos for a wonderful video.

    • @WorkshopCompanion
      @WorkshopCompanion  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interestingly, the design for the clamp caddy evolved when we were working in a shop not much bigger than what you describe. It allowed us to store all our clamps in an out-of-the-way corner, bring them out just for assembly, then get them out of the traffic pattern when they were no longer needed. And many of the features on the cart, such as the rack and the hand-screw shelf began as wall-mounted storage units that we simply bolted to a cart. As with most of the jigs and fixtures that we show on this channel, I try to break the project down into individual features so you can pick and choose what will work for you.

  • @PaulTantalo
    @PaulTantalo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice design and well thought out. I am in the process of making a similar cart, but I have reduced the depth of the drawers so that I have a 3" full-depth space in the middle of the cart to facilitate storage of long bar clamps.

    Nice approach to your design! I have a couple of thoughts offer:
    Rolling resistance: As I watched you pull the cart across the floor of your shop to illustrate its mobility, even with your 3” casters, it appears that there’s significant rolling resistance to it. I think that if you increase the diameter of the casters even more that you use on the box, you will find it much easier to pull around.
    Stability: In your discussion of the concerns some may have that the rack is top heavy: you can mitigate that to some extent by increasing the size of the base that the casters are mounted upon (adding some triangle bracing too), placing their contact with the floor farther out from the box. While that increases the footprint somewhat, the shelf and assembly table mounted to the sides already expanded the footprint.
    Keep up the good work!!!

    • @mrhobbs5713
      @mrhobbs5713 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think part of the rolling problem is that the casters are rubber. If they were polyurethane wheels I think it would roll easier.

      Cheers back. And by the way, we're beginning to think that Bella may have some Australian ancestry. Several of your neighbors have written in calling her a "kelpie," and I've written back explaining she's a border collie. But I have no papers to prove that, and after some consultation with some folks who train working breeds, we're fairly sure she's at least part kelpie. Whatever she is, she's one of the smartest dogs I've ever trained.

    • @lesblack413

    That is a very useful clamp caddy. I use a 30 gallon drum with tall plywood dividers creating four vertical quarters for my long clamps. It's on a rolling base but heavy enough that I normally come to it instead of rolling it around the shop. I purchased a nicely sized A-Frame clamp rack and it holds the smaller clamps. When I need to store more, I believe I'll build one based on your model. That gluing box is certainly going to get more consideration.

    In Oz there is only plastic conduit or galvanized water pipe these days, we used to have very flimsy metal electrical conduit but there were too many electrocutions & fires due to crappy wire insulation over the years (cotton, rubber). I used 1x3 and 1x4 pine screwed to the uprights for my 'Normite' double sided clamp rack on a 24x24 base. As for casters, I have noticed the local big box has iron wheeled castors with ball bearings and a capacity from 500 > 1000 pounds per wheel ( total capacity is calculated as 3/4 the total capacity of ALL the casters). There are also nylon wheel casters in the same range of wheel sizes, price & weight capacity but they have brakes to lock the casters. Much easier to get things rolling if its been sitting in one place for a while.

    Useing just plain cord/rope as pulling handles could cut into your fingers and become more uncomfortable and could apply a sideways crushing force to your fingers as the caddy becomes heavier. A way to minimise this would be to run the cord through a short length of PVC pipe or dowel (drilled lengthways). About 4in long x 3/4 to 1in diameter (100mm x 19 to 25mm) would be enough.

    People underestimate the strength of conduit though hanging long sash clamps cheek to cheek on spans like yours could call for an intermediate support. Also, my screwup on a larger A frame rack holding hundreds of pipe and bar clamps was to use too soft casters, an error I've made more than once on other equipment. Beware medical service take-offs on the surplus market. Those soft tires when heavily loaded are like trying to push a car with four flats. The prospect of completely unloading the rack to change the casters is very unappealing. Years pass with the new, heavier casters still on the shelf.

    Ah and HA! I have about 45 clamps all stashed on a wall rack in about 26" of valuable wall space and another lost count number of other clamps stuck to anything that will get things stuck to them. I've even considered glass lighting tubes, but had to pass on that idea.. Problem is my only real viable available wall to use for clamps has two pesky windows that don't do much other than give insects a place to buzz around then eventually die.. Floor space is the other problem and my floor LOVES extension cords and air hoses more than I do.. Did I mention that I collect darn near every scrap of wood that ever enters the door? Still, I'm not opposed to making better use of my bad habits and this rack may just change a few of them.

      Quick idea for your windows, if you wish to repossess them: The folks at Popular Woodworking magazine once had a window in their shop to which they attached narrow notched shelves. They used these shelves to hang and organize a variety of hand tools -- chisels, files, rasps, mallets, screwdrivers, wrenches, anything long and thin without a cord. This essentially turned the window into a tool cabinet with solar backlighting. It was quite striking. Travis and I are building a new shop that will have a few windows, and I plan to do this with at least one of them.

      @@WorkshopCompanion I thought about this as well myself, but I'm not too crazy about the idea of advertising to every thief in the area that I have a shop full of tools. The windows face the street and I'd probably have to rearrange the deck chairs in my personal Titanic. I could easily grow things in the windows though, but I'm in South Carolina. I'd have a small jungle in no time. LOL
      Actually my working partner and myself are close to closing a deal on a much larger shop. My wife has mixed emotions, but she would get her parking space back.

    I have a small ton of plywood scraps, but all seem just a bit too small or whatever or buy a full sheet and my old body fights with it till it's chopped down. I'll have to wait for the next supplier run and salvage pieces from what's leftover. Ain't that the way it goes when plywood has overtaken our bodily abilities? That's why I have a younger partner..
