    For about 98% of my 1911 shooting, I use 230gr. Lead RN bullets that I cast from straight wheelweights from a supply of wheelweights I collected for decades. They are basically FREE. I own 6 Model 1911s. 3 Colts, 2 Kimbers, 1 Charles Daly. I have full size (3), Commander size (1) and Officer size pistols (2)
    ALL of them had feeding issues with my practice loads of lead RN bullets. I polished the feed ramps and chambers on ALL of them (using only the polishing "bob" and polishing compound) and they all feed my practice loads perfectly now.
    A few minutes time and a little polishing compound have saved me thousands of dollars in ammo costs over many decades and allowed me to shoot much more.
    It works well with FMJ and Federal HST hollow points also (my carry ammo).
    I do not use a grinding wheel or sandpaper on my guns, fabric polishing "bob" and compound only.

    Never Ever use a Grinding stone on your gun to do a job like this use a Cratex wheel or cone then polish with a felt bob and Polishing compound like Simichrome or Flitz the Cratex will gently remove the tooling marks and sharp edges while leaving a smooth finish then polish to a mirror finish with the felt bob and compound

    Nice pick to work on. A while back I was at an indoor range helping a new shooter and a guy next to me had three 1911's, Colt, Kimber and Ruger. He said the Ruger was more accurate than the other two and let me shoot it. It was amazing for an out of the box gun. Was the most accurate out of the box 1911 I'd ever shot. Soon after I got a TALO Ruger Commander 1911. Had to have it!

      Thank you.
      Yes, the Ruger is a great gun right out of the box. Also great accuracy for a low price 1911. I have done a lot of work on it to build it to my preference for competition use. Has run close to 40.000rds now, and will last many many thousands more.

    If you look at your factory feed ramps under magnification, those factory circular machine marks are as big as mountain ridges. If you are scared to use a Dremel, then use valve lapping compound before polishing. And get Sig mags.

    This was satisfying to watch.
    I think I might need this done on my 1911. The bottom part of the throat of the barrel keep biting into the casing of the round and prevents it from going into battery.

    • @GatCat
      @GatCat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In that case you should consider a barrel reamer. What you are dealing with is certain cases that are too large. Like that of reloads or Aguilla. Polishing a barrel won’t actually solve the issue.

    Great video and thanks for the professional post on this... My IV Combat Elite is working excellent , but I did just do a little polishing on the feed ramp...I'm not doing anymore than that because it feeds everything, even an empty case.

    Hello Wolf, first thanks for an excellent video. My compact had some severe feeding issues, I followed your directions and it works well now. It doesn't look as nice as yours but that will come with practice.
    That said at 15:22 which exact head is that? I did a manual buffing with 2000 grit sand paper and it looks good but could be better. Mine is also a 45 so the same head should work well in mine. If you could provide that I would be really appreciative.
    Also, I subbed your channel as did a few of my friends.

  • @jtigertic
    @jtigertic ปีที่แล้ว

    If you have feeding issues try using a raised mag release first before polishing it raises the mag .020 so the round isnt hitting everything at as much of an angle so it feeds more smoothly.

      It sounds a bit steep, but feeding issues could also be related to extractor and magazine, or a combination. If you have the opportunity to send me a good picture of it, I will try to give you my opinion.

      +wolf 83 Thank you. I just replaced the recoil spring assembly with a Kimber ultra carry, now even hollow points will chamber, going to take it to the range in a few days. I guess the spring tension was just worn out.

    • @ek5419
      @ek5419 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need new recoil springs. The Defender is only good for about half the life and sometimes less when compared to a govt. model. How do I know? I had the same issue. I didn't waste money on the Kimber recoil assembly and the Colt assembly works great. I just replaced the inner and outer spring with Wolff springs.

    • @oscarostolaza1
      @oscarostolaza1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      EGW has a reverse double recoil spring set up that works great for the colt officers .45acp model, I installed it on my officers model and works great, the weak spot on the colt officers model is the original recoil spring plug tends to wear out on the inside from the spring rubbing against it until it’s to weak to retain the spring and bursts, it’s a matter of time before this happens, The EGW spring set costs about $59 plus shipping but it’s worth it! go to egw.com and check it out you can view it on you tube video also, look for it under egw recoil spring!😉

    Don't do it. The Colt 1911 was designed to use only ball ammo aka full metal jacket. But it's your firearm and your money, screw it up if you want. I have put hundreds of rounds through my Colt 1911 and have had no feeding problems with ball ammo. Go ahead, waste your money and ruin your gun.

      @@30roundclipazine79 Another trick I do is to apply a taper crimp to all .45 ACP rounds. For this I use a .243 Winchester sizing die, with the decapping rod removed, and adjusted so that the taper of the die just squeezes the case enough to make sure there is no flare left on the case mouth and the bullet is held tight.
      You could probably do it with virtually any .308 based cartridge loading die (as long as the case does not have too much body taper)
