I live in the 1000 Island region of NY. In order for something to be called an island, it must support two trees. One tree makes it a shoal and no trees makes it a rock.
The 1000 Islands were formed after the last Ice Age, when torrents of melt water washed away the soft limestone & left granite fingers sticking up. That's why the river depth goes from 10 feet to 200 feet in the space of 5 feet.

Great info, Joseph. Is that tree-based definition particular to the 1000 Island Chain, or is it recognized by geographers world wide?

@@BS-vx8dgAccording to Google (so it must be true):
Is it true that to be officially termed an “island,” a land mass requires at least three trees?
No, there is no such criterion for defining an island.

@@BS-vx8dg As far as I know it is a local definition. With about 1800 islands, many privately owned, I'm sure the tax man got involved. I suspect the tax rate for an island is higher than that of a rock.

There are multiple chains of barrier islands along the Jersey Shore that boast many famous tourist attractions like Seaside Heights, Long Beach Island, Atlantic City, Ocean City, the Wildwoods and Cape May, and a surprising number of year-round residents who love that awesome shore lifestyle (like me) but are still within driving distance of major cities and population centers along the I-95 corridor from D.C. to NYC. I enjoyed learning about the places on your list and maybe in the next one you could include these great spots.

I have a video suggestion I'd love to see.
Based on your experience and knowledge, what are some of the best smelling cities, towns, and/or regions, and what are the worst.
May sound silly to some at first, but different places do have very different smells based on climate, weather, and industry. Like when I was driving through Gilroy south of San Jose I noticed it delightfully smelled like garlic outside. Meanwhile, driving through Central California in Visalia where I live, the smell of the cows is horrendous. I like places that smell nice, so maybe you can suggest some places to visit?
Maybe some suggest times of year or events that make them better aswell.
Hope you do it, I appreciate you and what you do!

I got to tour the Apostle Island back in 2004 - like you say, the boat tour does not stop. When I checked in and the person behind the desk noted when I made my reservation [Jan - this was May] she couldn't believe how early it was made. When I saw that the tour group I was with was not going to do this tour - I signed up immediately [avoiding space limitations]. I would do it again.
I want to see Thousand Islands someday. Still on my wish list. I really enjoyed this video - I'm not too familiar with the 'off the west coast islands as I am with the SE US islands. Hawai`i is a favorite spot to visit. Too bad that you have to fly there.

As an upstate New Yorker, the thousand islands are definitely a hidden gem of the State. I love going up to see Boldt Castle and take an Uncle Sam boat tour up there every summer.

It's Khruangbin "Mordecai". I always put the album name in the video descriptions if you're curious about others.
