Vietnam’s HARDEST Deep Water Solos | ft. Kyra Condie & Tim Emmett

  • “Deep Water” is a captivating exploration of fear, mentorship, and deep water soloing in panoramic Ha Long Bay, Vietnam with psicobloc pioneer Tim Emmett and competition climber Kyra Condie. Watch as Kyra learns from the master, tackles the fear of climbing high above the water, and then succeeds on one of the hardest deep water solos in Vietnam, The “Lightning Crack” graded 5.13.
Ha Long Bay, Vietnam is a scenic climbing venue with over 3000 limestone formations dotting the ocean bay. Tim Emmett helped put “psicobloc” climbing on the map in Vietnam in the early 2000’s and has returned again to pass the torch to Kyra Condie, an aspiring and versatile climber with deep roots in competition and bouldering.
Louder Than Eleven’s Director Jon Glassberg teams up with Mountain Hardwear in this aesthetic short film highlighting one of the most dramatic forms of climbing.

Just wanted to give a quick warning to anyone that wants to plan a trip to do this. About a year and a half ago, my wife and I took a cruise around Ha Long Bay. Although it was a bit chilly out, I decided to take a quick swim around because I wasn't sure if I'd ever get another chance there. Later that night I developed an extreme rash all over my body and we ended up having to call an emergency speed boat to come pick us up and take us to a local hospital (it took about a week to recover). The problem is that at any given time there can be roughly 700 cruises operating in Ha Long Bay and a recent study showed that over 70% of boats in Ha Long Bay just dump their black tanks (sewage) into the bay. Unfortunately Vietnam isn't the best when it comes to pollution management. I'm sure if you're in a more secluded area, it's probably fine to swim. But as you can tell from the video, the water currents aren't very strong at all, so you may be plunging into some unpleasantness if you're at the popular cruise spots.

Amazing area with so many more routes than are posted online or in books. Sadly the ha long bay park police are starting to crack down on which walls you can or cant climb on. I had to come home because of covid, cant wait to head back there. Lots of new routes I need to bolt on catba island

hopped on Streak of Lightning two weeks ago, and hot damn it does not disappoint! deceptively steep, totally flat plane where everything else on the karst is craggy, and when the ocean gets moving it REALLY gets moving. There were massive sprays coming out from under me where the waves were connecting under the base. Adds a lot of pucker factor on an already hard solo. Incredible route. King for sure.

The same in Egypt - lots of boats at a reef, everyone snorkelling and the boats emptying their toilets, lots of turd fish around. current was very strong so the turd fish did not hang around too long.
I do wonder when you hear about food poisoning, if its more likely being picked up through the pool or sea water when swimming.

Shoes get soggy. The rock there is either super super polished or like a bed of nails in other words rubber slips or grips wheather its wet or notI usually have 2 pairs though one drying in the sun on the boat and one on the feet. The rubber is all you need to dry off. Chalk I dont bring a bag, I put a tiny bit in my pocket or loosely on my for forearms. Just enough to get by and I use a lot of chalk.

Your shoes are feeling just the same after they're soaked. And after the first fall you just wait 5 minutes for the rubber of the shoes to dry out and you're ready to go. Most of the times you go without a chalk bag and put some more liquid chalk on your forearms, however if you want to send something hard you have to be prepared with a lot of chalk bags, although i have used a half of a plastic bottle instead of a chalk bag and it still works.

Ok question from a noob: Do you just climb back on with wet shoes, clothes everything? And why sometimes they bring the chalk bag up? Do they have multiple chalk bags? Or after the first fall, the whole bag's ruined?

It's a big fall when you have enough time to scream twice

    Is the soundtrack avilable somehow/somewhere?
