      It's called old age. All living things break down with age only they have to storm the beach the entire way and they don't recover or heal because they don't even have enough energy for basic function at the end of it

      @@entity_unknown_from my knowlage it's less of old age thing and more the fact they mutate

    • @entity_unknown_
      @entity_unknown_ 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @diooverheaven6561 I thought they just loose the energy to heal. If they mutate it makes me wonder if they face evolutionary pressure to feed the local ecosystems they spawn in in this way lasting long enough to return and feed the nutrients back in to the system

    • @diooverheaven6561
      @diooverheaven6561 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@entity_unknown_ if i am not mistaken they mutate so that they can make the journey up the rivers and honestly it's kinda gruesome like in ocean faze of theyr life they look just like your typical fish but when they go into spawning faze theyr snout get's elongated and looks deformed they get a hunch, they become red, this mutation is not only drastic but most likely consumes a lot of energy

    Fantastic video, a criminally underrated species of giant extinct fish, plus nice coverage of some of the other local marine fauna
    I do want to say, though, that your comparison with Chinook salmon seems wrong; the size shown looks to be a little under two feet, which is pretty typical for adult Chinook. Record lengths can be almost five feet!! This is the case for some other species of the genus as well, although of course they are all smaller, by average and maximal sizes, than the spike-toothed.
    Overall, I just want to say that it's tragic how underrated salmonid fish in general are; most people just synonymize them with food. People who fish probably appreciate their beauty more, but then they also often eat them. This happens to lots of animals, they just get reduced to inanimate food in people's minds, but it's especially bad with fish. Trout and salmon are genuinely such gorgeous, large, colorful, charismatic animals, and they deserve more love! They are badass.

    The speculation about what they did with the tusks is just head-shaking bad. We already know what modern salmon do with obscenely large teeth they grow just before spawning, which those structures surely must be- modified teeth. They use them to defend their spawning partner from rivals. They would NOT have used them to dig redds, thats the silliest conjecture since 'this must have had great religious importance'. All salmonids dig redds by pumping their tails sideways, there is no reason to suspect these were any different. Any wear on their tusks would be from impact on the river bottom during that maneuver. If these were in fact filter feeders like Sockeye and Chum salmon they almost certainly had minimal teeth throughout their lifecycle, only growing those tusks as they approached the estuary of their home river.
    It's not like we don't have billions of living examples of relatives of this fish to observe and draw speculation on behavior based on physiology from, but I guess that doesn't generate clicks.
    It would be interesting to speculate on how it tasted, Sockeye salmon are zooplankton and crustacean feeders, which is the likely diet of this fish based on physiology. Sea run and landlocked sockeye both have dark red, tasty meat, and its possible this fish did as well.
