I'm a rebel. I just tied a couple bead-head style on number 14s.
I've begun tying buggers with this method of tying the hackle in at the front and securing it with the wire in the back. Thanks for that idea. Makes for a more durable fly that takes no longer to tie, with the added benefit of being able to use the rotary feature on my vise to wrap the chenille without having the hackle feather flopping all around in the back. :)

Marabou from the side of the feather and webby soft hackle does give very lifelike action in the water. Drop a bugger tied this way into a sinkfull of water and it comes alive. Very good video.
Hello, I am never sure who is tying but I like your videos. I am wondering, what kind of whip finisher that is you were using. It appears to have a spring in the center, lessening the possibility of thread breakage during the whip finish. I would love to have one of those. I don't break off very often on the whip finish, but I am trying to teach a youngster and he does often. I have him tying a half hitch now before the whip finish just to save the fly. Wow you are fast with the whip finish. I just started tying and it takes me forever to do that.
I actually found whip finishing by hand easier than using a tool. YMMV but give it a try!
@@seanearnest I agree haha, bought a whip finish and was like man this is much easier by hand.
Might want to go over hackle selection and where to get the right feathers for this size bugger. Often the schlappen packs or saddle packs have feathers that are just too big for these size buggers.
That's a good idea. Schlappen is kind of a crap shoot based on what you get in a pack. Whiting Bugger Packs and 4B Saddles are probably a better bet for dialing it down.
Smooth you tie well, yes on the tail, but some flash and got lead?
It's very hard not to go to the bugger while fishing... it does so well.. Adding strands of flashabou in the tail seems to increase the bite :o)
You gotta try out some baby buggers. I tied one in a size 16 for giggles last night, knocked them dead today.
size tungsten bead if you were to add ?say for size 10 nice to know what size bead for what size hooks..

I do mine the exact same, and for weight just use heavier copper wire...
can you add a link to your materals
lead wire is used to weight the body, and would be put on the bare hook shank. Lead wire would not be durable enough to counter rib the hackle.

Like ur style . I was shown same pattern using lead wier does it make any difference ?
YOu lost me on a crappy ALlen hook, are they still even around? Yeah I want my hook straightening out on a baby trout.
We more likely use a Daiichi 1710 these days. Not much Allen anything on our end any more...
Tim I have a question. Have you ever seen a sculpin in Shannon’s tied with multicolored micro chenille , brown dumbell eyes, overall rusty appearance? I lost the only last one they had before I could dissemble it.And several yrs. after to figure it out. 🥱I know, thanks.
