  • My friend asked "How many towels should I keep? How many towels do we need?"
So let me walk you through how many bath towels, hand towels, washcloths, and beach towels, we keep as a family of 5.

Timely, I just cleared out my linen closet. Went from 3shelves of towels to 1.25 shelves. Feels so much better with fewer towels. Will keep the laundry mountain smaller as well.

God brought you into my life. I've been wanting to start with my towels and washcloths in my minimal journey. I have them so terribly stuffed under my bathroom sink so badly that I can't even shut the door. So, that will be the first thing for me to declutter. Thanks!

I'm so glad we've been learning about the idea of "quarantining" a few items for a bit to see if we actually ever need them. Way less scary than just donating it right away if you're not sure. We don't have a massive amount of towels, but I do think we have several more than we need. I've noticed that when I do laundry (2x a week) I'm just putting the freshly cleaned towels back onto a stack of other towels we never get to. Red flag! Timer to declutter towels! And I HAVE found myself trying to save the nicer, fluffier towels for if we ever have guests. And leaving the thinner, smaller, older ones for us to use everyday. Hmmm. Time to rethink that. We have company so rarely and you know what? We deserve to use those fluffy towels every day! Time to donate the older ones!

When I first heard about microfiber bath towels about a decade ago, I became determined to find one. There was only one vendor who sold them, and I briefly enjoyed their softness and absorbency. Then I found out why they never took off: they're so absorbent that they eventually develop a mildewy smell that comes back as soon as they get wet.

Great point about the towels. Now there’s just the two of us in our house, I have four bath towels, four hand towels. Each week I put two of each out in the bathroom. Also, I now only have two full sets of bed linen - one to wash and one to sleep on! When we downsized a few years ago, I was amazed at how many towels, sets of sheets, etc, we had. I always kept a good supply because back in the day the kids were always having sleepovers! I would seriously recommend downsizing to help with minimalising - it worked for me! 😁

For us, for instance, I like to switch out hand towels, and, for the most part, everyone needs her own for face.
But, we also need a supply of "old towels" for whatever happens that I don't want to use "nicer" towels for

Yes, everyone should have their own hand and face towels. I would want more than one for myself. I don't have a washer in my apt.

Those kind of things are always happening at my place. I think i have about 8 old towels to deal with disasters, i would feel uncomfortable with less.

When my kids were little, we didn’t have enough towels but I really couldn’t afford new towels very often so we struggled along and made do. Then as the kids got older and I/we became more financially secure, we could finally afford to get lots of new towels (and other things). Gradually, though, we had way too many. Now the kids have all moved out on their own and I am still trying to figure out how many towels I actually need. Right now, I have 7. I’m thinking of going down to 5, but I’m still not sure. 😮 i’m still working on it.
    Love your videos and advice!❤️

A few years back when I got remarried & my husband and I combined our households, I discovered we had toooo many towels. As we were going through things, we had decided we would have a garage sale. So, I went through and kept the best towels first - ones with no holes, newer, etc. Then I tossed any that had large holes or were thread bare. I kept a couple for the laundry room for spills or pet messes, etc. Then I went through the good ones again and determined how many we might need for each of the two bathrooms. The very best went in our master bath, probably more than we really need/needed. Same with the other bath. We did have two kids living with us at the time, so I think I kept about 6 for that bathroom I.
Even after all that I STILL had about 50 towels to go on the garage sale!! 50!! I put them in bundles of 3 each, I believe, and marked them $1.50 a bundle. They went like hotcakes! Somehow, our towels have multiplied again! So, this video is very timely as I need to pare them down again. These tips are going to help me make even more thoughtful decisions this time around on how many to keep! I love watching you and my fantasy self hopes to become much more like you! I’ve been working on it for years and am very slowly getting there! (Used to kind of be borderline hoarder. Or maybe not so borderline. 😂) Blessings to you!

I always hang towels on a towel rack. They do not dry here in FL when hung over a peg. I use two towels a week, plus a separate hair towel or turban, and 3 or 4 washcloths and two hand towels. Two guest towels and a dozen extra washcloths in the linen closet Four beach towels, three dog towels (and 4 washcloths as well), and two old towels for emergencies. That number works in our household. Old towels are cut up and used for cleaning.

Recently I got addicted to buying new towels. I have them in every color of the same brand so they are exactly the same except for the color. Unfortunately for me they make them in just about every color and now that I saw them I feel I must collect them all. I'm up to 14 new bath towels all in different colors. I can see on the website they have two more colors so once I find those I should be good. But there is always the worry that they come out with more colors. Also, I live alone and rarely have overnight guest.

I use already two towels a small and a big one for my daily shower and use clean ones every day!!! My sweet spot is 4 small and 4 big towels for daily use. And the same amount as a spare. So maybe not that minimalist yet, but well I simply want clean towels every day.

I like that you mentioned the number of towels is different for each family. I think an easy way to know how many you need is to stack all-aalll- the clean towels in one pile and throughout the week they will be used, and then washed, and before putting clean towels back on the stack I look at the leftovers and decide how many backup towels you want to keep. This applies to wash cloths and hand towels too. We used to have too many because someone told me i should have 2 of each per person. Isn't it funny how we go along in life on advice from others until we realize it doesn't work for us . We actually got rid of all of our wash cloths and hand towels because we just use our bath towels for everything. I think most people are on some kind of laundry schedule, and need enough to last until it's laundry time again at the minimum. And I definitely agree it's easier to hang up the clean towels for everyone back on their rack instead of folding it just for it to be grabbed later in the day...I will just let everyone know the towels were all washed and put back so they know the towel is now fresh. Typically we only need 1 towel per person. However it is nice to have 2 or 3 extras in case of guests/pet bath/a water leak.

Love it! I struggle with the hand towels and such, but we downsized to I believe 2 beach towels per person plus 2. We use one for regular showers and stuff, and then in summer we have one for each of us in the pool bag, and I have 2 in the car in case I stop past the campground.

Another great informative practical video. Only three of us in the house but we have 3 bathrooms so I have one hand towel in each and one backup for each bathroom. Also none really uses washcloths much so only have two or three of those. Have too many bath towels though. I will go through those soon and donate a few. Thanks for the motivation 😊

I took two big bags of towels out of my cupboard recently. I have had them for years and kept them just incase but never needed them. We now have two each and one change of hand towel. It felt great getting rid of them and I have never missed them.

There are 3 adults in our home, and do our own laundry. Recently I did pare down the number of towels/hand towels/wash cloths, and donated a bag full. We have towels for the pool, (we swim year round) and have about 4 bath towels per person, plus a few extra for over night guests. . I keep several hand towels and wash cloths, as those get change out daily.

My husband and I only use our towels once, maybe because we prefer thinner towels to fluffy ones, but also because they get double duty. After I dry off, I use my towel to dry the shower walls and the tub. It helps with moisture and also cleaning. I don't want to use a towel again after wiping the walls and tub with it. Also, we hang our towels to dry before putting them in the laundry basket, so we always use one of the dried towels as a bathmat the next day. I have to change the hand towel in the main bathroom every day because I wash my hands a lot. It gets wet and I don't want bacteria buildup. Our half bath doesn't get used often, so I only change that one when I wash towels. We have the right amount of towels for a full load. That's how I decided how many to keep. Before, I had the number of towels I could fit (cram) in my space, which was more than my washer could hold. By limiting it to the washer capacity, I no longer feel guilty about cramming another one in to get it all done or having half a load of towels still waiting to be washed. I also keep a couple of fluffy towels in the linen closet, which get used, though not often. In normal times, we have an out of state friend who visits a couple of times a year and I know he likes a large fluffy towel. We use them ourselves on the rare occasion we need another towel or I miss towel laundry day for some reason. I know it's time to wash the towels when I pull my last one out every 4 days. That's my reminder. All the towels get washed in one load and everything has a place in my linen closet, so it's easy for me to maintain. I use a laundry basket as the towel hamper and also to carry the towels up and down the basement stairs. I have to fold the towels and put them away, not leave them in the basket, so that the "hamper" is back in place ready to receive dirty towels again. I know laundry is a lot easier when it's just two people, but I grew up in an out of control laundry situation, so I didn't know about having a normal/regular laundry routine when I got married. I didn't know all of your laundry could be done and put away instead of having piles of clothes waiting to be washed and more piles waiting to be folded and put away. I tried and failed many times, but I finally figured out what works for us and it took the stress out of laundry. I've only recently begun decluttering and minimizing my home, but I've had a laundry routine for years. I've tweaked it as needed over the years, but I know from my experience growing up how much difference having a system and a routine in place has made in our home.

I don’t have hand towels in my house. I have kitchen rolls instead. I think hand towels are totally unhygienic.
I won’t dry my hands on someone’s hand towels in other people’s bathroom/loo, as other people have used them & they’re nearly always damp. Ugh. I use loo roll instead.

We have too many towels, i have 4 for just cleaning, i use about 3 just to dry our mopped floors each week, probally enough for 2 each person so another 12, these can also be used for visitors. 6 beach towels and about 4 spares, when we camp sometimes they dont dry in the outdoors easily. The 26 towels lol. Not even counting the bath mats and face washers, smaller cleaning towels. Oh and my hair dying towel, its a hooded one to protect my skin. I am am minimalist with many towels but they all fit in their space.

I strive for a minimalistic life. But as a mom to 8 it is challenging. The toys are probably the hardest thing. I try to refine the kids toys and put away lots in boxes .
