      @@dbodooley I think some reason may be that it was an HBO film and never came to theaters, so less exposure there. Other than that, I don't know. I own the Blu-Ray of this and it has tons of bonus stuff from Billy Crystal. Just listening to him talk for about 30 seconds, you see very clearly that it was a passion project. That definitely came through on the screen. Fantastic film, one of the best baseball films without question.

    I wish today kids could see this clip on how much respect Roger had for the game. The biggest home run in history and his team mates had to force him out for a standing curtain. Today's major leaguers just hit a worthless home run and expect to be carried off the field. Roger Maris was a great ball player and does not get the full credit he deserves. If he were playing today he would be making 20 million a year for the stats he put up. Rest in peace Mr. Maris.

      And unlike in this scene he DID NOT watch that ball fly out He hit it looked up to see the flight of the ball and started running. The cameras followed the ball hovered in the stands for about 2 seconds then panned back to maris who was about 2/3 of the way to second before he eased up. He ran the bases in 19 seconds. Guys now can’t get to first base in 19 seconds sometimes

      You'd think he'd be in just by the home run record alone. There are guys in the HOF with worse career stats than Roger. HE BROKE BABE RUTH'S RECORD that should be enough! I guess it's mostly a longevity thing, plus Maris had only 3 great seasons, the rest were good.

      @@robertanderson2898 Who do you think is in the HOF w/ worse stats than Maris?

    • @robertanderson2898
      @robertanderson2898 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I mean not worse in EVERY category. Maris had 247 more HR and 116 more RBI than Rick Ferrell, in 6 less seasons (yes, different eras and positions).
      Frank Chance is in, has fewer Hits (but a nice Steals total and Avg). Might be the only one in the HOF with fewer Hits than Roger who was a regular player. But times were different. He was a pretty decent manager too, that probably helped.
      Nope Roger Bresnahan also had fewer Hits than Maris and he's in (Roger B was inducted for something else though).
      Thanks for responding after more than 3 years....... !

    • @1981lashlarue
      @1981lashlarue 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@robertanderson2898 It's an intriguing position and I've heard other people proclaim so it so that's why I responded. It's an interesting position; it's just one that I've never agreed with. You really can't compare dead ball era players like Chance and Bresnahan because it is just two totally different eras.
      I really like Roger Maris. To me, he's a really good ball player that had three great seasons. However, a lifetime .260 hitter with less than 300 homeruns and less than 1,000 RBIs isn't worthy of the HOF. If it were, there would be a ton of guys in there. I'm probably more critical than most because I'm of the opinion that there are too many in the HOF that don't belong in it.

    • @robertanderson2898
      @robertanderson2898 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@1981lashlarue Yeah Maris' overall numbers are nowhere near HOF standards, just thought he might have gotten in because of beating Babe's record, 8 extra games or not. I wish it had been Mantle instead.
      Also in '61, Norm Cash batted .361, never hit over .286 before or after that, and no other season was close.
      Both those '61 seasons stick out like something insane..... I agree, too many HOF'ers right now.

    they really need to get a copy of this on Netflix Canada, they really do. I mean Baseball season is coming up and with that comes a whole new wave of statistics, numbers, exciting moments, and nostalgia from years gone by. Plus this film is a very solid outing for director Billy Crystal who really knew how to mesh character with history and make it work in the context of what it is: Baseball. Not some overblown world changing experience, just something that changed him as a person.

    His numbers may not define a Hall of Fame player, but you would think with all of the hell Maris and his family were put through during his time in New York that the Hall of Fame committee would make an exception. It's true that 1961 was his best year because after that he declined and eventually left New York in bitterness and disgust. On the other hand, like you have commented he was a nice guy who really only wanted to play the game and not break someone's record.

    What an underrated and underappreciated baseball talent was Roger Maris! I still believe he belongs in Cooperstown where hsi bat resides!

    Not only did he have this season, but he won the mvp the year before. Bud Selig should at least reopen the consideration for Roger Maris in regards to the Hall of Fame

    It's embarrassing to say that I am a true baseball fan with Roger not being in Coppertown. They wanted his bat, not him. People say that he didn't make the grade. Take a good look at what he did in the 12 years of playing pro. I believe that you'll think different.

    Although I wasn't aware at the time, I also had a 'connection' with Mickey. My Mom is from Commerce, OK, Mick's hometown. I heard a story that when Mickey was young, he rigged a baseball on a rope in a barn so that when he hit it, it would swing back around so he could hit it again. (maybe while it was still moving?)

    This is BY FAR THE MOST POWERFUL [EPIC] SCENE 🎞️ in the whole 🎥ovie. Ironically FEW people realize {unless of course you watch credits at the end of movie's} that albeit ALOT of CGI was used, ALL of the "Yankee Stadium" shots are actually digitally enhanced over "Tiger Stadium" in Detroit, Michigan. I remember being an extra in the crowd, they actually had to repaint "Tiger Stadiums" interior from light blue to a sort of green to match "Yankee Stadium" which wasn't an issue because the Tiger's had moved to "Comerica Park" the year before. I think that it was fitting and a tribute to history that Billy Crystal used Tiger Stadium in his movie, considering that the actual men this movie was based on, hit ALOT of their home runs in that stadium, including a famous one from Babe Ruth that was found a couple side streets away. It gave the old girl a proper goodbye before she was 😢 sadly torn down.

    Lol the Yankee fans acting like they supported Maris all season and didn't boo him mercilessly for much of the season. Poor guy couldn't even get anywhere near a full house of fans rooting for him chasing history. If it were Mantle going for 61, that stadium would've been full.

      Which is why I have no problem with his number being retired by the Yankees. The shit that man went through with the fans and media. The organization did nothing to help him out. The man felt like he wasn't welcome and essentially boycotted anything related to the Yankees until Steinbrenner "convinced" him to come back for Opening Day 1978. The crowd gave him the standing ovation he long deserved.

    Some movies depicting real life events may enhance the reality a bit, sometimes resulting in a negative reaction by audiences.
    I'm sure there are many still alive that perhaps remember this moment in sports history a bit differently than what we see now.
    This is one fan's account of such a special moment for all baseball fans. I was not there, but, when watching this clip of film, I cannot help feeling that Billy Crystal' s motive was to perhaps remind those who where, and for all who were not and even future ballplayers, like my grandson, he truly makes you feel that you could be there, watching a special man making sports history.

    Roger Maris uno de los mejores jonronoeros de todas las épocas en las grandes ligas, recuerdo brevemente ese año 1961 pues solo tenia 7 años mi Sr Padre me enseño a adorar el béisbol en honor al Sr Maris le puso a mi hermano menor Sergio Roger esos si eran verdaderos jugadores que jugaban casi los 162 juegos se entregaban a la camiseta por amor no como ahora que es por puro dinero

    Little known fact: the actress portraying Roger's wife (0:24) is Billy Crystal's daughter. Billy didn't tell Barry Pepper until the very end and he was shocked, proving she outright earned the role on her talent.

    true there were only 23,000 there that day, something that seems unbelievable with today's nonstop commercialism. but if you listen to the real broadcast of that homer, the roar by that 23,000 will give you chills, and i'm not even a yankee fan.
