    USS Enterprise (CV-6), colloquially referred to as the "Big E," was the sixth aircraft carrier of the United States Navy and the seventh U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Launched in 1936, she was a ship of the Yorktown class, and one of only three American carriers commissioned prior to World War II to survive the war (the others being Saratoga and Ranger). She participated in more major actions of the war against Japan than did any other US ship. These actions included the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, various other air-sea engagements during the Guadalcanal campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On three separate occasions during the Pacific War, the Japanese announced that she had been sunk in battle, earning her the name "The Grey Ghost".
    Enterprise earned 20 battle stars, the most for any U.S. warship in World War II. Some have labeled her the most glorious and honored ship in the history of the United States Navy, rivaled only perhaps by the 18th century frigate USS Constitution.

    She didn’t deserve that fate from her history to fighting almost alone in one part of the war. R.I.P Uss Enterprise (CV-6) Your service to the United States won’t be forgotten.

      At one time her sister ship USA Hornet was the only fighting carrier in the Pacific. After the vicious Battle of Santa Cruz at Guadalcanal, the Hornet was lost and the Enterprise badly damaged. She was patched up and returned to service. The three IJN carriers did not. A light carrier was sunk and their two best carriers had to withdraw to Tokyo for repairs. Guadalcanal was lost to Japan while Enterprise provided invaluable air support. In 1943, America's industrial might spit out newer more advanced carriers, warplanes, and other vessels. It was not unusual in later war years to have our own Kito Butai with ten carriers. Most included Enterprise.

      "...I couldn't bear to think of her sitting around in some backwater, being exploited in unworthy ways, invaded by hordes of tourists with no sense of her greatness. Better by far, I thought, to leave her to memory of those who had served on her when she was fully alive, vibrating under full steam at thirty-two knots, the aircraft turning up, guns firing, heeling over so sharply that the hangar deck took on water to avoid the bombs."

    Had a history teacher in high school who served on the Enterprise. Will never forget him talking about what he saw when the Enterprise slipped into Pearl Harbor the night of Dec. 7th to refuel and provision the ship.

    it is called Navy recycling when a ship is pulled from service all of its parts are given to the next ship to bear its name.

    The ship that should have received the japanese surrender at Tokyo bay. Unfortunately, she was damaged and was under repair at that time.

    So sad. I always wondered what happened to her. They scrapped the most decorated US Ship from WWII between 58 and 60. Under Eisenhower? Her and the Missouri should still be together for all to see and remember...😔

    This here kids is what we call a post-war crime. I mean, if it is true that the steel used in this ship was also used in CVN-65 and now CVN-80, I can see how some consider her be still be living on. But this ship should have been made a museum, and kept in commission alongside Constitution, and while I love Constitution, Enterprise’s combat record blows Constitution’s out of the water.

      yes but when you take parts generation to next generation. that atmosphere on the ship will be different. i would be glad to serve on ship which steel fighted against axis in WW2. thats how can gray ghost be gray ghost now.

    Why Would They Scrap It :C

  • @chadlpnemt
    @chadlpnemt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The crappy thing is that they couldn't raise enough money to make it a museum, the navy wanted some huge amount of money, but when the group that wanted it had to back out, the navy sold it for scrap for way less than they were asking the preservation people. The same thing almost happened to Hornet CV 12.

      Its happening to the JFK now and there will be no more museum carriers after her as they are all nuclear and have to be literally cut in half to remove the reactor and make them safe.

  • @geomodelrailroader
    @geomodelrailroader 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    LOL parts they take off are the radars,the torpedo belt,all of the deck guns,and some of the steel the rest is scrapped. same thing will happen when CVN 65 is scrapped the only thing that won't be salvaged on CVN 65 is the reactor that and the fuel will be sent to a disposal site.
