About a week and a half ago we had an overnight freeze come through and it really hit my tomatoes plants hard. Also got some leaves of my squash. That's a good technique I might borrow it. I have 18 indeterminate tomatoes growing up on string, my 4 Cherokee Purple plants when they put out a cluster of blooms they are continuing to grow into a productive stem. I've been pruning them off. I've had this happen occasionally but not on almost every cluster. I have my determinates in a weave and at this point I can see they are loaded up big time. If they stay healthy I should have plenty of tomatoes and lots of canning to do.

There you go. The effect is to reduce the primary apical stem growth too reducing height. Was just mentioning this to a guy for cucumbers. Same same for cucurbits. Another thing that you can do is let all suckers grow with a few leaves and top. The new growth is healthier than the older, lower leaves that you can now cut off. Older leaves are first to show signs of weakness and disease.
That's exactly how I do mine. I couldn't bring myself to cut off the flower clusters on the suckers, so I keep them and just trim the growing top. Then when the plant is getting too tall, I let a lower sucker live and become the new main stem.

I probably should've used this technique before my SuperSweet 100s reached eight feet, in the last garden I grew. Although I think next time I'll be ready for them with arched cattle panel. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

This is very similar to how I prune my hot pepper and aubergines plants in the greenhouse. I allow a side shoot to survive very early, then prune out every side shoot for a couple of feet, before letting the plants then have a bit more freedom to branch and fruit as they will.

Well.. you have given me a new way to control my tomato plants. Last year they got really big, I used the FL weave, it worked but I wanted something a bit stronger. Went with cattle panels this year, but now I am thinking pruning this way will really help with with the size. Thanks for sharing!

Great tip! I usually end up missing a sucker and find it after flowers appear. It's hard to remove a sucker with flowers since we have a short season. Topping it, instead, just makes sense!

Can you top off other plants to encourage more fruiting? I've heard you can top off cucumbers to encourage more production of side shoots where the fruit grows. But what about other plants?

Just my experience, but I stopped pruning for control on my tomatoes a few years ago. I only remove diseased/damaged sections. My harvests are at all time highs and I spend so much less time on the plants now.

Question: When the sucker you have topped off produces its fruit and has been harvested, will you then remove the sucker completely? Great video, appreciate your time!!
It depends on time of year and what you want. A lot of them will grow ne suckers in joints. If you need the leaves for growth, keep them. But you can do what you want really. Trying to make videos this summer that might have new or less talked about info.
My second yr here in SE Nth Carolina, I tried pruning aggressively on indeterminate tomatoes, but, I lost so much growth? I don't have the ability to vine high. This yr I'm pruning low, but being careful not to prune too much higher to attempt to avoid sun scalding. However, this yr, there's so much rain & heat together, even though I'm constantly pruning spotted, yellowing leaves, pests have taken over! Not only triple digit indexes, but won't stop raining enough to spray for pests😢 within a day I'm loosing half my harvest?😢

NC can be brutal at times. Some years my tomatoes have reached more than 8 feet tall and more tomatoes than I know what to do with and others the fungus or pests get out of control and I get a handful of tomatoes. This year the deer have been pruning liberally and topped 90% of my plants right out of the gate. Never a dull moment! Don’t give up!

I accidently topped one of my cherry tomatoes in late May this year, when it was only 2 feet tall. Not sure how that happened. But then that plant started ripening tomatoes way faster than the others, and I was able to get 30-50 very early cherry tomatoes in June. I plan on doing it every year now.

This is what I do when the main stem split and I don't know which one to keep. I will keep them both until I can tell which one is the strongest then I stop the continuation of the other one. I also do the same if there is a sucker that I missed.
All indeterminate tomato suckers will produce fruit. The suckers that begin at the leaf just below a fruit cluster (every third leaf/sucker) are the ones that will grow at the same rate as the main stem. I train my indeterminate tomato varieties to a single stem. But if I want a 2-stem plant, I allow the sucker that forms just under the first fruit cluster to become the second stem because it will grow at the same rate as the main stem, and then I prune out the rest of the suckers as they develop at each leaf. If I want a 3-stem plant, I allow the sucker that forms just under the second fruit cluster to become the third stem. I tie a string to the bottom of each stem, wrap the stem around it as it grows, and tie it to the top of a 6 foot tall trellis, cutting the stems when they reach the top.

Hey y'all. I'm growing a determinate variety this year for the first time. I was under the impression not to try to stake it or prune it however it's going crazy in my garden! Not a bad thing but I tell it all the time "I know you're going to hide tomatoes in there that I will miss!" I hope it will help when they ripen. Should I be topping it?

Question, I have been using Aspirin Spray on tomatoes and peppers every 14 days. Should I continue this while plants are blooming/fruiting? Will spray gum up pollen and reduce fruiting?
They spray wont harm any process. Every 2-3 weeks is fine. I havent read much evidence that it helps peppers but see what you notice. Thanks... You can pick tomatoes green & sit them in a warm place in your home and those green tomatoes will soon become the ripe color they should be. @everyone I love using the suckers I cut off and making new tomato plants. So cool, just cut off sucker, trim up all but maybe 2 leaves, poke sucker into a jar of water or soaked soil, in a wk or 2 your suckers will start growing roots. SO amazing.
I should have topped my plants! I'm growing Napa Grape Hybrids. The seed packet said "mature height of 40-48 inches. They are now 7 feet tall and outgrowing the 48" tomato cages. I just had to snip off a 2-foot long branch that fell over and creased at the top rung of the cage. I lost a dozen or more tomatoes. Next season I'll know to top them. Trust not the seed package!

Won't the 'topping off' cause the sucker stem to 'sucker' down where the original sucker came off of the 'main' stem. I think it will continue to sucker. It is indeterminate and it WILL continue to sucker.
Yeah suckers sucker and those suckers sucker. In theory. You would remove them if they show. However, the plant is working on growing fruit too and sometimes the suckering slows in the lower growth. About a week and a half ago we had an overnight freeze come through and it really hit my tomatoes plants hard. Also got some leaves of my squash. Tomatoes were doing so well but now they have to recover, not sure all will survive. Oh well, that's the life of a garden. You have such a beautiful garden. Always enjoy your informative videos. This instance is where I give them water soluble chemical type fertilizers and than go back to my organic ways. It really helps with new growth for damaged plants.

This is the best tomato pruning tutorial I've ever seen. I knew how to prune for single or double stemming, but this takes it to another level entirely. I will definitely be trying and learning this technique in this year's garden.

I am still learning too. That is why I love growing.
That's a good technique I might borrow it. I have 18 indeterminate tomatoes growing up on string, my 4 Cherokee Purple plants when they put out a cluster of blooms they are continuing to grow into a productive stem. I've been pruning them off. I've had this happen occasionally but not on almost every cluster. I have my determinates in a weave and at this point I can see they are loaded up big time. If they stay healthy I should have plenty of tomatoes and lots of canning to do.

There you go. The effect is to reduce the primary apical stem growth too reducing height. Was just mentioning this to a guy for cucumbers. Same same for cucurbits. Another thing that you can do is let all suckers grow with a few leaves and top. The new growth is healthier than the older, lower leaves that you can now cut off. Older leaves are first to show signs of weakness and disease.
That's exactly how I do mine. I couldn't bring myself to cut off the flower clusters on the suckers, so I keep them and just trim the growing top. Then when the plant is getting too tall, I let a lower sucker live and become the new main stem.
Yes! That’s an excellent way to help keep them more manageable!

I probably should've used this technique before my SuperSweet 100s reached eight feet, in the last garden I grew. Although I think next time I'll be ready for them with arched cattle panel. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

This is very similar to how I prune my hot pepper and aubergines plants in the greenhouse. I allow a side shoot to survive very early, then prune out every side shoot for a couple of feet, before letting the plants then have a bit more freedom to branch and fruit as they will.

Well.. you have given me a new way to control my tomato plants. Last year they got really big, I used the FL weave, it worked but I wanted something a bit stronger. Went with cattle panels this year, but now I am thinking pruning this way will really help with with the size. Thanks for sharing!

Great tip! I usually end up missing a sucker and find it after flowers appear. It's hard to remove a sucker with flowers since we have a short season. Topping it, instead, just makes sense!

Thank you very much. I have a tomatoes plant that looks like it's gonna die but has a lot of tomatoes on them. if I cut the stem half way down will it grow out and get more tomatoes this season??
I think it might if the stem is healthy. I have a few plants dying, I think because I didn’t get the watering right.
That is what happened to one of my plants, then I top mine. Production increased after the rain finally got clusters of tomatoes.

Can you top off other plants to encourage more fruiting? I've heard you can top off cucumbers to encourage more production of side shoots where the fruit grows. But what about other plants?
You can. I do like keeping a main stem going for plants that have them. But as cold approaches topping works for many. Best to experiment.

Just my experience, but I stopped pruning for control on my tomatoes a few years ago. I only remove diseased/damaged sections. My harvests are at all time highs and I spend so much less time on the plants now.

Question: When the sucker you have topped off produces its fruit and has been harvested, will you then remove the sucker completely? Great video, appreciate your time!!
It depends on time of year and what you want. A lot of them will grow ne suckers in joints. If you need the leaves for growth, keep them. But you can do what you want really. Trying to make videos this summer that might have new or less talked about info.
My second yr here in SE Nth Carolina, I tried pruning aggressively on indeterminate tomatoes, but, I lost so much growth? I don't have the ability to vine high. This yr I'm pruning low, but being careful not to prune too much higher to attempt to avoid sun scalding. However, this yr, there's so much rain & heat together, even though I'm constantly pruning spotted, yellowing leaves, pests have taken over! Not only triple digit indexes, but won't stop raining enough to spray for pests😢 within a day I'm loosing half my harvest?😢
This method should help. Rain isnt stopping here either. It like all or nothing here.

NC can be brutal at times. Some years my tomatoes have reached more than 8 feet tall and more tomatoes than I know what to do with and others the fungus or pests get out of control and I get a handful of tomatoes. This year the deer have been pruning liberally and topped 90% of my plants right out of the gate. Never a dull moment! Don’t give up!

I accidently topped one of my cherry tomatoes in late May this year, when it was only 2 feet tall. Not sure how that happened. But then that plant started ripening tomatoes way faster than the others, and I was able to get 30-50 very early cherry tomatoes in June. I plan on doing it every year now.

After your tomato sucker is done producing tomatoes do you take the whole sucker of all together?
Realistically where leaves were left, youll get new suckers. So you can repeat. But if you dont need the leaves you can remove what is left.

This is what I do when the main stem split and I don't know which one to keep. I will keep them both until I can tell which one is the strongest then I stop the continuation of the other one. I also do the same if there is a sucker that I missed.
All indeterminate tomato suckers will produce fruit. The suckers that begin at the leaf just below a fruit cluster (every third leaf/sucker) are the ones that will grow at the same rate as the main stem. I train my indeterminate tomato varieties to a single stem. But if I want a 2-stem plant, I allow the sucker that forms just under the first fruit cluster to become the second stem because it will grow at the same rate as the main stem, and then I prune out the rest of the suckers as they develop at each leaf. If I want a 3-stem plant, I allow the sucker that forms just under the second fruit cluster to become the third stem.
I tie a string to the bottom of each stem, wrap the stem around it as it grows, and tie it to the top of a 6 foot tall trellis, cutting the stems when they reach the top.

Would you use the same technique for cherry tomatoes? They get huge and bare until late fall in my garden.
You can do the same thing and I find cherries just get out of control so I prune them heavily at times.

Hey y'all. I'm growing a determinate variety this year for the first time. I was under the impression not to try to stake it or prune it however it's going crazy in my garden! Not a bad thing but I tell it all the time "I know you're going to hide tomatoes in there that I will miss!" I hope it will help when they ripen. Should I be topping it?
They still need staking based on the size and can be pruned for the bottom leaves and leaf removal in center. Normally you dont top our remove sucker for determinates. You can if you want.

Question, I have been using Aspirin Spray on tomatoes and peppers every 14 days. Should I continue this while plants are blooming/fruiting? Will spray gum up pollen and reduce fruiting?
They spray wont harm any process. Every 2-3 weeks is fine. I havent read much evidence that it helps peppers but see what you notice.

I'm confused - Doesn't heat cause tomatoes to ripen? Why promote shade around fruit clusters?
Heat doesnt promote ripening. Warmth is the air anyway, not the sun. Tomatoes exposed to the sun directly can get sunscald.
Tomato change colors at night
I know that my tomatoes stay green FOREVER when it gets too hot. There’s probably a sweet spot.
You can pick tomatoes green & sit them in a warm place in your home and those green tomatoes will soon become the ripe color they should be.
@everyone I love using the suckers I cut off and making new tomato plants. So cool, just cut off sucker, trim up all but maybe 2 leaves, poke sucker into a jar of water or soaked soil, in a wk or 2 your suckers will start growing roots. SO amazing.

I should have topped my plants! I'm growing Napa Grape Hybrids. The seed packet said "mature height of 40-48 inches. They are now 7 feet tall and outgrowing the 48" tomato cages. I just had to snip off a 2-foot long branch that fell over and creased at the top rung of the cage. I lost a dozen or more tomatoes. Next season I'll know to top them. Trust not the seed package!

Is there a place in your area to trade seeds ??? Like a seed bank?
I do not have much money but would love to trade sum the seeds i have to others for some of their seeds. I am looking for cherry tomatoes in a rainbow of colors. A short day to harvest corn, & bug resistant types of squash, open polinated for all. The older the line if seeds the better such history from sum seeds
I dont know of one but a lot of people trade through facebook groups and such.

Won't the 'topping off' cause the sucker stem to 'sucker' down where the original sucker came off of the 'main' stem. I think it will continue to sucker. It is indeterminate and it WILL continue to sucker.
Yeah suckers sucker and those suckers sucker. In theory. You would remove them if they show. However, the plant is working on growing fruit too and sometimes the suckering slows in the lower growth. But it would be true in theory,.
