Like a robot?, heavy long extended phrases and dropping bombs where there shouldn't be any...mmm. no, but methinks that he may be a database monkey? Mapping their music will get you sectioned...😮
@@riseupyourself... I didn't understand a damn thing you wrote.. What the fucking are you talking about? The music of SD is so good and timeless that it doesn't need anyone's stupid assessment
very few people have heard this track my man, source direct for me was the best project in drum & bass history, full stop. noone wielded the atmosphere & the breaks with such deadly precision.
why was dnb so good back in the mid 90's? because the producers influences were coming from blues, jazz, funk, dub, hip hop, electro, acid house, and they had only just started making lots of money. i think when making tunes becomes a living a lot of the creativity must get lost and people start chasing whats popular, so the music becomes much more generic.
russelledwards001 Spot on! I think that's exactly whats wrong with most artists. You can see that those who continue to do their own thing (not chasing the money), they always come out with creative/quality stuff.
NVBSCVN92 Artists make no money from record sales and music these days couldn't be worse. This music was a product of its time, people need to be aware of the futurist movement of the mid 90's. They also made money from record sales so if an EP made some nice sales it was like a competition to get the craziest vibes and breaks and the money they got was an incentive to get more gear as well. Of course the hardware and restrictions all contributed to this sound too. I can't think of anyone making music like SD even back then, this dark and soundtrack like d&b really was their own.
Its more like every artist has the time of bloom.. where the enthusiasm and love is fresh and real.. after that certain period in time they slowly settle themselves and its getting a rusty daily routine..
my source says (personal friends of the duo) that Jim was always the brain of the project, as you can see through cuts like Dog Style, Jim vanished after test pressing DEMON12006, Phil "The Tall One" runs Vampire Records & produces as "Grand Mastez". PS The SD page on myspace is a fanpage. Undeniably one of the most technical & solid projects in Drum & Bass History.
Ha,gotta love the Source! all i have is their stuff on the two MetalHeadz Platinum Breakz cds.Unreal stuff.Their remix of J Majik's tune is unreal.great Amens
sorta in the vein of the no U-turn family type sound.i loved their records were like 6 minutes and the last two popped out with this dirty wtf bassline just to give you your fix..
Blackrose and shimmer kill me everytime but yeah too many to mention pretty prolific out put. Be great to bring this style back but the kids who just got into it today wouldnt understand. Itd be dnb for 30-40 year olds haha
Big tune, I have this on dubplate with two other properly unreleased Source Direct tunes, 'Monte Carlo' and 'Taylor Made', I bought off Phil Source on ebay a few years back. Maybe its time to sell em on?
this tune surprised me. I thought I had all their releases from 1994-1998 until this moment...But there is another track that really makes me wonder whether it exists or not, on 12", cd, whatever, I mean 'sculpture's hide' that appears on Incredible Sound of Drum'n'Bass compilation. But the question is whether it exists NOT mixed, but as a single...I think we would never know :(
yeah, this is like some kind of having royal privileges when you are part of all that production crew, where everyone knows each other, shares most recent works, that possibly might be released on acetat dubplates for label djs . F***ing Olympus
A bad, bad tune....I was lucky to make friends with a guy on ebay from Japan. He sold me the "controlled Dev.." Import CD for like 25.00 dollars. Its value for this bad ass tune being on it.......Priceless. ;]
I keep seeing photek as being a dark dnb artist but I'm sorry...nothing compares to Source direct...even closer to the 7:00 when that sharp kicks in right before the drums...photek is great but not in this realm of delivery like Source direct.. If there's dark photek songs, please tag some because I just don't see it
dunno, there is Teebee's remix on Snake Style :)... actually, I don't like it. I would like to know too, if there is one chance to hear that heavy tune, to hold that mysterious 12" with my hands. In my dreams, so...beautiful lol
Netsky is amazing, as well, though... Very different DnB though. this is, as some comments indicate... "Primal" ;) But yeah, imo, the dnb back in the days WAS more creative.
SD is so dark but yet very elegant.Theres such a balance they have.Their music is a like a robot ninja, deadly but beautiful.
Aye, always a Journey, but never over-do it.
What a description, that’s bang on

i wish someone would take up the mantle of dark, spacey dnb where these boys left off. My fav dnb producers for sure alongside bukem.

Can't beat those BREAKS!!

Well in terms of that I think Photek and some of his more darker alias's(System X and Studio Pressure) could compete with this type of vibe.
Also the equipment used such as hardware samplers ...You actually had to have talent to make a decent tune.
Love that small short harsh sound snippet regularly emerging throughout the tune. Its like a sonic spike right into my ears.
wait till 3 am. put on headphones with max vol.. lite spliff and look out the window!!
hahaha
Lol
thats me dood.
instructions unclear spliff was to light n blew out the window
The true school of DnB. Dark as hell... eat this Netsky.

gangsta shit
nicely said arcon, precision, deadly execution,
surgical bass bombing, technicality, these are the elements that defined drum & bass back in the day.
Primal DnB
I think a time portal must have opened in 1997.
