I was home schooled and did Abeka Academy in 6th grade from 2004-2005. I think my favorite thing about that program was Mr. Howe because he was so funny! :) But otherwise, I just feel like it was too much for a 6th grader. My school day was very long and I just remember it being exhausting. I think maybe I could have appreciated it more if I was older, but I just think that it's hard for a kid to pay attention to a teacher on a tv screen.
@@marybethr6798 I did use Abeka for a couple courses. It was really good but not our style of learning preferred. Thanks for the reply! Is this your first year homeschooling?
I’m pretty scared! I just pulled my kid out of school and waiting for our kit. I truly believe I’m supposed to be homeschooling her, so I know we will get thru it somehow. I looked at many programs but my heart kept going back to this one! I did join tons of homeschool Facebook groups and the main thing I kept hearing is don’t do the busy work unless they are struggling with it. Do the videos and textbook work plus quizzes and tests. I’m about ready to make our calendar so as soon as I get the kit I can use the progress report sheet that says when they have test, so in our planners I can hilight quiz and test days for us to be prepared. Do you have any other advice for a first timer at homeschool. She will be in 8 grade:)
It can be pretty overwhelming at first, so if that happens, don't think that you shouldn't be doing it. Take a step back. Take a day off here and there if you need to. Purposely plan a big "fun day" once a month where you don't do any lessons and just go out and do some educational (or maybe not educational) thing - a fun museum, living history location, or something more suited to your daughter's interests. Maybe find a local homeschool group to do things with (try meetup.com), and for yourself, find a good online group for advice, suggestions, and help when you might need it (the place I used to go closed, otherwise I'd recommend it). You can do this. :)
One thing to definitely keep in mind with Abeka: don't try to do it all. When I tried that my first time with abeka my kids were bored to tears and hated school. Now we tailor it to our needs and they love it. We skip the videos we don't need and do the ones we do. Sometimes I ask them to do just the evens or just the odds on review work to help out some. Don't stress. I do know that we left abeka and I totally regretted it. So we came back and now I just changed it to fit our needs. Love the video. We love abeka. We aren't on videos right now but I can't wait to go back to them in the spring!!!!
The whole thing lol , my son is in 7th grade when I was chatting with abeka they told me that they would do all , the tests ,the grading , everything now I see that I have to give quizzes tests and even grade his work. I don’t know how to do that. My son gets up very early watch his lessons do his work on the books they send and get tests. That’s all now all of the sudden I have to give essays quizzes and give grades?
Yikes! Yeah, you do have to give the tests and quizzes. There should be a separate answer key for each subject to grade each test or quiz (pretty easy if it's multiple choice or fill in the blank) but yeah, essays and writing are going to be harder to grade. I do believe Abeka will TAKE the tests and quizzes (that you need to send to them AFTER grading) and do the full recording of them, if you pay for that service, and hold those for you and maybe do the computation on the overall grade, but that's about it. I was very overwhelmed when ours came this past year and there were tons and tons of scheduling books and other things, but adjusted over time. Abeka can be really helpful if you call them. I was suggest giving that a try if you need more clarification OR, because it's the right time of year, see if you can find a sales display in your area (www.abeka.com/MaterialsDisplay/) and see if the salesperson there can help clear things up for you (don't know how much time they can give you, though, since they're mainly there to sell.)
This was EXTREMELY helpful! Thank you for going into detail about your pros and cons. I
Sure! Glad it was of some help to you.
Thank you for your insight. We are beginning Abeka for my daughter soon.....so nervous but excited. Blessings!
How much per month?

Did you end up sticking with abeka academy? Is your child still with it?
My son is in abeka started three weeks ago, but I don’t understand nothing at all .
I'm sorry. Don't understand what? The curriculum? How it's scheduled?

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me understand . Hopefully I’ll get it 😁
