    It’s a good thing you caught it when you did. Looks like you’re on the mend then. Thank you for putting out a video on this specific topic of water quality. A lot of new koi keepers don’t completely understand the affects of nitrite and nitrate on their koi let alone what to do about it. It’s great that you researched it as well and put all the time into it. I use the Prime too when my levels creep up. So thank you again for this video. I’m sure it will be very helpful to a lot of koi keepers, including myself.

    I had this when my pond was new. Mark from cuttlebrook said salt at. .75%. I was sceptical but desperate. Added 37kg of salt to 1100gal in 3 hrs and stopped water going in, fish instantly responded and improved in an amazing way.

      Hi mate, the salt definitely helped calm them down, and thankfully, things are getting back to normal now 🤞

    There are quite a few research articles online that have tested prime against nitrite. Seachem themselves say they don’t actually have any proof or know how it does actually detoxify nitrite sadly.
    I hope things get better, water changes seem to be the only definite way to dilute the problem and salt. But salt only protects the heamoglobin, not the fishes internal organs.

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thankfully the koi seem to be over the worst of it, most of the redness has gone and much more calmer. However the Seachem works it definitely reduced the nitrates and gave me a bit of breathing space to continue water changes and using salt. Thanks for the comment. Andy 👍🏻

    When I have this issue,
    I reduce the flow off variopump down to 5000lph an turn the uv off, for the good bacteria to build up, to combat the high nitrite levels, it allways works for me.

    Prime is a great emergency sticking plaster for ammonia and nitrite spikes. There is a product called Safe, which is essentially Prime in powder form.
    Much more economical if treating larger bodies of water.

    You *Might* be better off going with Seachem's Safe, Its the concentrated powdered form of Prime . It does mostly the same thing but does not have the slime coat protectant that Prime tends to have but 250grams of Safe will treat 48,000 litres. It might be worth looking into if your Nitrate levels continue to be high.

    Andy, have you checked your tap water. We have been having problems for a while. If you checked the water out the tap, you get a good reading, but after a night, it is totally different. It's something that's being put in the water, and there's not saying what. On GKP last week, a person said it was carbon dioxide I think. and they say that they don't provide water for fish. So I don't know where they think we get pond water from . But there you go .keep your chin up, mate .but a great topic, see you Sunday remember job's a goodun 👍

    Fingers crossed the koi will have no long lasting effects from the high nitrite and nitrate levels. 🤞🏻Sounds like you have things under control again so that's good. Just wondering, did you happen to contact the water people to see what, if anything, they were adding to the water? Might help prevent a similar problem in the future if they plan on doing the same thing again. 👍🏻

      Yes - a reverse osmosis/deionization would remove everything leaving only pure water. You would have to add trace elements back into the water if you’re not just replacing evaporation though.
