i hate when people say that they traded barzal.. they traded the pick to isles who then took barzal.. have you ever seen edmonton drafting? if it isnt in top 5 they dont know how to draft.
Trading away Barzal's pick is somewhat forgivable since they traded that pick before the draft positions were announced and Pittsburgh (who the pick originally belonged to) was looking to be a promising team in the playoffs, meaning that that pick was likely going to be at the bottom of the first round. Even if they could predict Pitsburg doing poorly in they playoffs, most mock had Barzal going 8th overall. What IS unforgivable is trading away Hall and Eberle for nothing when they were already proven stars.
@Ari Lin this stuff happens though. Vancouver has waited to see a lot more out of #6 pick Virtanen....still waiting, Calgary has waited to see a lot more out of #4 pick Bennett....still waiting, so it happens with high picks too!

Only Toronto might understand their pain? Did you watch the Flames between like '94 and '04? There have definitely been some low times for southern Alberta, too. Heck, the decade that followed '04 was only slightly better than the one that preceded it. It feels good to have a solid team again finally, but it has hardly been smooth sailing to get here.
Yup was definitely close to a decade for the leafs from like 2004-2011 that was dark times reminds me of those teams not much depth and against the cap
But how did Toronto turn it around? They burned it all to the ground and salted the earth. They fired everyone from the GM to the scouts to the guys who change the lightbulbs. And you know what? It seems to have worked. Edmonton needs to break up the boys club.
@Shawnaldo75 Trust me, had he done nothing (stay put) the team would be a contender. It was bad before him and having him put the franchise back 2-3 years.
No team "deserves" to suck. No fanbase or players on the organization have any say on who gets picked, how scouting is done, or how trades are made. The head office and corporate level of the team's do the dealing, and create the team we see every other night. The problem is that they're the only show in town 8 or so months out of the year. They're so beloved that even when they're just decent, the players get worshipped. They never have to fight for their relevance in the marketplace. Even Toronto, when they went year after year of missing the playoffs started to be unable to fill their expensive boxes. In the past few years when Vancouver were in the bottom 5 in the league you saw games with swaths of empty seats. Not the case in Edmonton. They always fill the building, no matter how terrible they are, and that's how complacency sets in.

This is an absolute horrible draft record. By Comparison, Detroit has 42 players using the same measurement. By the way, 350 games are only a little over Four Seasons.

Could be there's only one trade the Oilers need to make before they're a playoff team again. When the Capitals traded for Rod Langway, they were a playoff team almost just like that, after years of being complete rubbish.
- Really? One big trade is going to completely fix the Oilers' situation right now? All they are is McDavid & Draisaitl...they need those two guys to drag the team to victory every night. - And even last night...Drai scored both Edmonton goals, McDavid assisted on both...and STILL the Oilers fell apart. Even when they ARE putting up points the Oilers still can't win games. Yikes.
Brother, it's a lot more complicated these days. For us, GM Poile was gambling, cause it was one of his first gambles. Nowadays, it's not very clear cut.
If the issue is within the dressing room do a press conference and tell the other teams these players are not open to trade but the rest are...send your offers. Embrace a rebuild publicly and the fans I believe can accept that. Show the players the management is no longer messing around. If there is a complete facelift, so be it. But something needs to be done. And as someone below me stated, I do not believe McDavid is a leader. No offence to him but maybe just let him play with an A and do what he does best, play the game. I live in Edmonton and am far from an Oilers fan but I cant help but feel everyone's pain and frustration.
As long as fans continue to fill the seats, there is no urgency for Katz to purge the organization of dead weight in senior management. It won’t matter who they bring in as GM, expect more of the same as long as the Old Boys Club remains intact.
Nicholson has to go this off season, this is his "something in the water." But heck Katz will bring in Gretzky and Coffee and the Oiler fans will dream large and fail even larger once again! Toronto Maple Leafs ( decades of failure ) 2.0!
the problem is the the players...beside 3 or 4 of them there is just no try. puck 2 feet away well lets not move our feet to get to the puck lets sit and take a breather while someone else moves their feet and gets the puck instead. They get scored on and the team just starts to mope, its all feel bad for me because i'm trying my hardest...suck it up cupcakes...you make millions a year to play a game, at this point the oilers need to grow up and realize that life is tough!!! i would love to see these guys being a labourer at a construction site making 18$ an hour...I've worked with people making far less that work much much harder than these bums(like i said though except for maybe 3 or 4 of them).
The Oilers lack team toughness because they're emotionally fragile. They signed Lucic to his deal to bring that toughness, except that he doesn't have the footspeed to play the actual role he was signed to play. So depth wise when it involves knowing how to play tough and at NHL speed which the Oilers just don't know how to execute effectively. That's why things just sort of fall apart on them. Some player personnel changes will help alleviate that over time (long term time horizon). Eventually, this team will learn the same way in which the Calgary Flames and the Winnipeg Jets have learned. I humbly believe that the actual thing that Ken Hitchcock and staff need to teach them is the understanding of how to be tough team wise and defend properly for 60 minutes. This is what the NHL is. It is incredibly hard to defend for 60 minutes. The top teams in the league with the exception of maybe the Leafs, all defend as hard as they can for 60 minutes, and that is why they're earning their points. The offense becomes a by-product of good defensive team play, then transitioning to offense. Obviously, if you have some top end talent it is going to translate to offensive chances and opportunities, but remember a lot of it is generated by something they did well defensively. So that is where the Oilers need to get to. It might happen this year, but they have to get over the current mental state and grind out a win. Until then it will be nothing but depression for them
Us Oilers fans are pissed because someone let chiareli do these trades and signings. Wheres the intelligence of the management allowing us to get screwed so badly. Someone in the organization should have vetoed the Hall trade and really discussed the power that chiarelli should have.
RE: Edmonton Oilers There is nothing in the water in Edmonton that is somehow responsible for the Oilers losing games. It's simply that this collective group of players are not skilled enough to play at an NHL level on a consistent basis and they all subconsciously know it and feel it as a group. Too many players on the team who don't belong in the NHL. It's that simple. The Oilers will have to make a whole lot of roster changes in the off-season.
Damn it's another disappointing year Might be 3 points out of a playoff spot but for a fan it's feels like we're nowhere near Damn, I'm from UK and flown over to Edmonton (and Sweden) to watch my team - Oilers through and through but damn frustrating
Where is the joy in the Oiler fanbase, administration and for the players? Ok, this has come to the point of a step beyond feeling sad for one great player running up humiliating losses, to hey, there are a lot of players who are feeling the slap in the face. Feel how hard it is for each of them, not just one star, or 2 star players. Having the first pick over and over, and still lacking... something is very wrong in EDM. What is it? Is it internal? External? What steps need to be taken? What makes TOR do well? Chance? or planning? What put TBL where they are right now? Why did the Caps have winning season after season and a Stanley Cup at last? Can EDM do it? Of course they can. Get it done. From the top to the bottom, inside and out. Don't be so devastated by each loss, no wins are owed, just earned. So go out and earn it. You CAN do it. If you still doubt and feel like the hockey gods are against you...look at the former players you've let go. How are they doing? What have they accomplished? Individually and with their teams. Come on EDM.
Man, after a nearly two decade run of the West running the league: Avalanche, Redwings, Ducks, Blackhawks and Kings. The West is a joke now considering how awful teams can limp into the wildcard spots.
To a man statistically every player on the Oilers is on pace to score more points then they have last year, many of them on pace to have career years. At what point does the whole " these players need to act like they want to win" narrative stop and we finally come to our senses and realize aside from McDavid, Nuge and Draisaitl these players are who they've always been, they're getting paid accordingly, and they're not good enough.
having to rely on other teams to lose is no way for a team to hope to make the playoffs.get rid of the old oilers this isn't the 80's. best thing Calgary did was getting rid of the sutters and bring in business men to run the team. and my comment on draisatil is 8.5 million a year but can only produce playing with McDavid. wonder how all those first round draft picks that were traded feel about not being in this mess that the oilers have been in for over a decade.its not going to be an easy fix in edmonton
In the last decade they have had 4 of the 1st overall picks. They Let Yakapov go to Waivers and have have had MANY top 5 picks as well. But this is their Just reward for stabbing Taylor Hall in the Back. The Oilers management should be all fired, have this many top contending players to pick from and waste it
Canucks lost 12 in a row and are now hungry for playoff action with strong locker room comraderie while battling injuries the majority of the season so far. Edmonton failed in their rebuild. Connor is carrying that team on his back and they have little to show for it. RNH, Nail Yakupov didn’t pan out as well as we all hoped. Hall is gone; what did Chiarelli see in Larsen again? Their only good defence man is Nurse, though Bear looks promising. Don’t @ me
I get that Lucic fell off a cliff skill-wise, but Talbot averaged 70 starts a season for the last two seasons. Seriously, what team has a goaltender start just over five out of every six regular season games? Still a goalie’s graveyard, I see.
You need to fire the scouts or who's making the decisions on drafting, cause they are terrible! Or it's your development! Or it's in the locker room! Or it's the coaching staff... Actually who knows, it's the whole organisation... It's really quite sad.
Still available when Oilers should've taken to the 2015 Draft podium.... Mathew Barzal Kyle Connor Thomas Chabot Colin White Brock Boeser Travis Konecny Anthony Beauvillier But no, Griffin Reinhart, y'all.............. Just sayin'.......................
Oilers gotta get rid of the old boys club there, obviously it isn't working. The guys who run the Oilers Entertainment Group don't have a clue what they're doing. Besides McDavid and Draisaitl the team has no talent, no depth, no secondary scoring, no goaltending, They're an OHL team playing NHL guys. If McDavid were smart he'd leave this dumpster fire of a team and go play for a real team. And people try and be optimistic "we're 3 points out of the playoffs" yeah but IF they actually make it, they'll likely be the 2nd Wild Card spot then get swept by Calgary in the 1st round which would be horrible for Oilers fan morale.
Is this not the same team that made it to like the third round less than 2 years ago? Now one bad streak and it's the end of the world? No, that's not over reactionary at all.

Karl-Anthony Towns nobody is gonna take that trade. Just fire them
Brother, it's a lot more complicated these days.
As a long time leafs fan, you're not going to like how this goes
We believe that we can still draft the number one pick... Realtalk Edmonton...
Now they know how their fans have felt for years.
As long as fans continue to fill the seats, there is no urgency for Katz to purge the organization of dead weight in senior management. It won’t matter who they bring in as GM, expect more of the same as long as the Old Boys Club remains intact.
The question should be "How are they only 3 points out of playoff?"
Old boys club good job very impressive 👊
Tough times in oil town.
For the past 15 years now
4:56 Aww, how you guys gonna show a kid crying over the Oiler's loss. My heart ;(
They’re only 3 points out from wildcard? Says a lot about the state of the west right now
The Oilers lack team toughness because they're emotionally fragile.
RE: Edmonton Oilers
There is nothing in the water in Edmonton that is somehow responsible for the Oilers losing games.
Damn it's another disappointing year
Might be 3 points out of a playoff spot but for a fan it's feels like we're nowhere near
Damn, I'm from UK and flown over to Edmonton (and Sweden) to watch my team - Oilers through and through but damn frustrating
The management is all fucky
U r right. Be positive Fight on. Problem is owner/ mgt... Clear lack of ability to judge talent & character.. That is the issue..
I'm so embarrassed we lost to the Oilers in the first round a couple years ago
Thomas H because they were good before now i don’t even know what to say to them.
@@Sapnap69420 so they were good for one season and bad every surrounding season? no, they were lucky that season.
Man, after a nearly two decade run of the West running the league: Avalanche, Redwings, Ducks, Blackhawks and Kings. The West is a joke now considering how awful teams can limp into the wildcard spots.
Wayne Gretzky was the greatest hockey player to ever play the game but get rid of him and the old guard
Relocation is the answer ...
And don’t tell anyone but McDavid where you’re going.
Nato Vato
To Regina lol
When Jack Hughes becomes a Penguin, y'all will lose your minds....
its actually pretty depressing
"Who's Dumber?"
"It's a tie"
McDavid ate the cap .. and should take responsibility .. Instead he has chosen to put it on other players. :(
To a man statistically every player on the Oilers is on pace to score more points then they have last year, many of them on pace to have career years.
They Let Yakapov go to
Waivers and have have had MANY top 5 picks as well.
Don’t @ me
Trade talbot and number 27 useless
No one wants them
I get that Lucic fell off a cliff skill-wise, but Talbot averaged 70 starts a season for the last two seasons. Seriously, what team has a goaltender start just over five out of every six regular season games? Still a goalie’s graveyard, I see.
do not forget rieder,gravel,rattie,benning
DerJungeMiroslav talbot is horrible
Good luck finding a buyer. Even Benning or Bergevin aren't THAT stupid.
My advice to Mcdavid get out of Edmonton as fast as you can if you want to have a successful career. Go to Colorado or Buffalo or Vegas.
"there's something in the water"....they need to fire Nicholson and a few others higher up than him !
might have to package some skilled players and crappy contracts to get out of this mess boys, sorry, not sure what the alternative is.
I love the oilers. Its not the team. Management needs a rebuild possibly the coaching.
i ashamed to be an Oiler fan
Mactavish needs to go. It blows my mind they still employ him
Hardest fanbase in the nhl to be a member of. Something is fundamentally wrong with that franchise.
You need to fire the scouts or who's making the decisions on drafting, cause they are terrible! Or it's your development! Or it's in the locker room! Or it's the coaching staff... Actually who knows, it's the whole organisation... It's really quite sad.
Coming in from 2021... still same story
Still available when Oilers should've taken to the 2015 Draft podium....
Mathew Barzal
Kyle Connor
Thomas Chabot
Colin White
Brock Boeser
Travis Konecny
Anthony Beauvillier
But no, Griffin Reinhart, y'all..............
Just sayin'.......................
John Shanon is part of the problem. In this interview he’s protecting management And blaming the players
Edmonton doesn’t deserve McDavid’s loyalty.
entire management group from top down needs to go and the owner needs to stay out of the business or nothing will change ever
All they need is another 4 first round picks...
Is this not the same team that made it to like the third round less than 2 years ago? Now one bad streak and it's the end of the world? No, that's not over reactionary at all.
2nd round
