This is certainly one of the best T&J cartoons EVER. The music is fantastic and that's all that the toon really needs for audio rather than dialogue, it's beautifully done.
It was also used in animated cartoon shorts such as The Opry House (1929) with Mickey Mouse and Rhapsody Rabbit (1946) with Bugs Bunny. But of course, it's most famous in the 1988 film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit during a piano duel between Donald Duck and Daffy Duck.
@@VictorGonzalez-xs9oc But they don't really have the same magic as the classics and likely done by people who just take established ideas and twist them into their own manner
When you think every frame was drawn by hand by hand, using no computers and the genius of the storyboard writers together with the ideas of how to put it all to the music, no wonder it won an Oscar. The beginning when Tom walks pompously onto the stage in the manner of a great maestro cracks me up 😂
The most impressive part of this cartoon to me is not only were they able to create a fairly balanced and engaging battle with such a limited premise, but they did it with seamless transitions and no breaks in the music. It looks effortless here, but writing a continuous scene like this for 7 minutes straight without making it boring, repetitive, or gimmicky takes some considerable talent, let alone the effort put into animating it.
@Christiansback2024 yeah. Whenever Jerry is distracted, it takes seconds to react afterward. That happened in The 3 Stooges. Moe hits Larry with the eye poke, and it takes a few seconds for him to react
Yep. And that comedic timing was caused by Jerry almost wanting to interfere with Tom’s concert piece, but it turned out to be a masterpiece of a song instead.

Who didn't love Tom and Jerry?! 😊 The episode has music it definitely up my alley!! Next to is :"is you is ,is you ain't my baby". That song always makes me laugh 🤣😂
"Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" is a song written by Louis Jordan and Billy Austin. The song's first recording, by Jordan, was made on October 4, 1943.
I'll admit that I've always enjoyed Rhapsody Rabbit a bit more as a child because I saw that one more often on TV, but honestly, this short is also a masterpiece. I love the classical music centered Tom and Jerry shorts, such as Tom and Jerry in the Hollywood Bowl and Johann Mouse. My favorite gag in this one is Jerry trying to cut Tom's finger with a pair of scissors. Also the bit where Jerry starts gleefully playing "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" much to Tom's annoyance. The ending is classic where Jerry keeps trolling Tom.
I actually always liked the Bugs version more, but to be honest, I saw that one more often. I thought the piano gags with Bugs were a bit more creative as Tom is for the most part, playing the piano straight--Jerry is the one providing most of the comedy here. Both are really good though.

The Liszt Rhapsody appears to have been played adapting to the cartoon. If so, quedos to the arranger and conductor for producing/ creating one of the most unforgettable cartoons of all time.
I have to admit. Seeing WB release “The Cat Concerto”, an MGM production, first on their official channel before their own cartoon, “Rhapsody Rabbit”, given that whole controversy is quite a shocking admission.
