    I was fortunate enough to hear and see him and Mr Baldwin in recital at Westminster Choir College. It was exquisite. I was speechless when he asked me at the reception “Are you a singer”. I blurted out something….lol.

    I do not get what is ridiculous there. For once we've got the right style and... the text too. Everything is very understandable and the musicality does not suffer... To my ears this is great French mélodie !

    An extraordinarily beautiful performance. But why are singer and pianist placed so far apart, and in such a way that the accompanist cannot even see the singer? And it's a shame that the first few notes are missing from the piano part: the filming starts when the performance has already begun. Still, I am very glad that we've got this rare footage of my very favorite singer!... For the record, the superb pianist -- not named in the post -- is Dalton Baldwin.

      Oui . Immense artiste .

    D'aller là-bas vivre ensemble!
    Aimer à loisir,
    Aimer et mourir
    Au pays qui te ressemble!
    Les soleils mouillés
    De ces ciels brouillés
    Pour mon esprit ont les charmes
    Si mystérieux
    De tes traîtres yeux,
    Brillant à travers leurs larmes.
    Là, tout n'est qu'ordre et beauté,
    Luxe, calme et volupté.
    Des meubles luisants,
    Polis par les ans,
    Décoreraient notre chambre;
    Les plus rares fleurs
    Mêlant leurs odeurs
    Aux vagues senteurs de l'ambre,
    Les riches plafonds,
    Les miroirs profonds,
    La splendeur orientale,
    Tout y parlerait
    À l'âme en secret
    Sa douce langue natale.
    Là, tout n'est qu'ordre et beauté,
    Luxe, calme et volupté.
    Vois sur ces canaux
    Dormir ces vaisseaux
    Dont l'humeur est vagabonde;
    C'est pour assouvir
    Ton moindre désir
    Qu'ils viennent du bout du monde.
    - Les soleils couchants
    Revêtent les champs,
    Les canaux, la ville entière,
    D'hyacinthe et d'or;
    Le monde s'endort
    Dans une chaude lumière.
    Là, tout n'est qu'ordre et beauté,
    Luxe, calme et volupté.
    - Charles Baudelaire
    Invitation to the Voyage
    My child, my sister,
    Think of the rapture
    Of living together there!
    Of loving at will,
    Of loving till death,
    In the land that is like you!
    The misty sunlight
    Of those cloudy skies
    Has for my spirit the charms,
    So mysterious,
    Of your treacherous eyes,
    Shining brightly through their tears.
    There all is order and beauty,
    Luxury, peace, and pleasure.
    Gleaming furniture,
    Polished by the years,
    Will ornament our bedroom;
    The rarest flowers
    Mingling their fragrance
    With the faint scent of amber,
    The ornate ceilings,
    The limpid mirrors,
    The oriental splendor,
    All would whisper there
    Secretly to the soul
    In its soft, native language.
    There all is order and beauty,
    Luxury, peace, and pleasure.
    See on the canals
    Those vessels sleeping.
    Their mood is adventurous;
    It's to satisfy
    Your slightest desire
    That they come from the ends of the earth.
    - The setting suns
    Adorn the fields,
    The canals, the whole city,
    With hyacinth and gold;
    The world falls asleep
    In a warm glow of light.
    There all is order and beauty,
    Luxury, peace, and pleasure.
    - William Aggeler, The Flowers of Evil (Fresno, CA: Academy Library Guild, 1954)

    @jozefsterkens2 : Ses enregistrements nous restent et sont assez régulièrement réédités. Je m'en contente. Cette interprétation, provenant d'un récital télévisé, est contemporaine de la version enregistrée pour Philips en juillet 1962. Le pianiste est le même (l'excellent Dalton Baldwin).

    Maybe he is making a comeback thru a "youtube resurrection"? - he is not an operatic singer, really - what operatic singer could really sing chanson as well as this?

    • @baritonebynight
      @baritonebynight 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes actually he had a great career in opera.

    • @ainhoaaparicio3729
      @ainhoaaparicio3729 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He even used to be an operatic tenor before he settled for being a barytone. Whence the richness and homogeneity of his range.
      Hermann Prey was another opera singer who excelled in the Lied repertoire.

    Ir read that Souzay and Balwin , the pianist, lived together in France and were a gay couple for many years. Both are passed away now, but it is awesome they were music partners , either if they were a couple or were only friends or roommates.

    • @JozefSterkens
      @JozefSterkens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whem Souzay died it was not mentioned in the french press or tv.
      I once saw an intervieuw with him on french tv where he openly spoke about being gay, it was short before he died
      When tenor Georges Thil died there was a page in "le Monde" with the titel Titan of the tenors died!

      @Ellatigojusticiero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JozefSterkens Don’t even know George’s Thil that you mention….but I red somewhere on TH-cam that Souzay died, , also red that Balwin , the pianist , died like 10 years after him, not sure how many years but quite a long after Souzay…he had a beautiful full voice with a very pleasant color.

  • @Ellatigojusticiero

    It's quite true. France is infamous for its lack of classical singers. This is the best France had? I've heard better singing and "artistry" at student recitals.
