    I was told by a Toyota tech that that unit underneath with the hoses is actually a transmission fluid heater that gets the transmission fluid up to operating temperature quicker using engine coolant with a thermostat when the fluid is cold. On the prior units with a Transmission cooler another unit is sandwiched in between with return hoses heading back to the radiator mounted external cooler and is also thermostatically controlled.

    The Water to Fluid Cooler on the Transmission is designed as more of a Transmission Warmer for Cold Climate areas. This will circulate Engine Coolant through Transmission to help warm it up to Operate properly when its Freezing Outside.

    2019 tundra and I row a 25’ trailer. 7000#. No issues. I asked the dealer if the tundra has had issues with the transmission and no cooler. They stated they have never seen a failure. So everyone who is calling Toyota stupid. How about you prove that transmissions are failing! Prove that it is an issue! Prove that Toyota is wrong.

    • @repairvehicle
      @repairvehicle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why tundra used transmissions sold for high prices on eBay? Because they fail and running transmissions at 230F degrees cuts transmission life significantly. Do some research on transmission fluid temperatures. Dealer will not tell you the truth, they know you will be back soon for new tundra or transmission repairs.

    • @steve4658
      @steve4658 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm trying to figure out why Toyota did this? It was already there and they went out of their way to De-engineer the truck. Do you have any insight on why they did it? I have a 2021 5.7 and tow about 4,000lb. Should I be worried?

    • @repairvehicle
      @repairvehicle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It saves time and money because they have less things to connect upfront on assembly line. It depends how often you tow, change atf fluid and where you live.

      I don't plan on towing as much weight you are,but I installed cooler as soon as I got home from the dealer. Relatively easy install with Toyota transmission thermostat, and hardliners under the motor to the front to a after market racing radiator. I leave the transmission thermostat pinned during the summer and plan on pulling the pin for the winter. My transmission temperatures are no where near what some owners are reporting without the cooler. I also installed an inline magnifine transmission fluid filter, just before it enters the cooler. Just my two cents.

      I’ve read somewhere that they use a different ATF that does not degrade at hotter temps so they did away with the external transmission cooler. Not sure if that info is accurate though

      You not going to see overheating light to come on. Toyota have adjusted software so that light will no come on even if it's overheating. Temperature over 220F is already overheating transmission fluid and transmission components on the inside.

    Is it safe to tow with a 4.6 without trans cooler it has 6500 lbs towing capacity

    • @repairvehicle

      If you planning to have trouble free transmission on the longrun, then towing without cooler is not an option.

    • @repairvehicle
      @repairvehicle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not just transmission cooler has not been installed on 4.6. Also, engine oil cooler has not been installed. Towing without coolers definitely shortens engine oil life and transmission fluid life. But, heat generated inside without cooler has negative effect on transmission components and shortens its life. 4.6 is a great truck but without cooler it has limitations.

      @@repairvehicleby all accounts that's a warmer, and it COULD provide dome cooling as engine coolant temp is approximately 195F. However the cooling is MINIMAL. I have a 2020 Tundra w/ a towing pkg. It has no fluid to air cooler. Using a scan tool which I bought today, just driving 10 miles, towing nothing, my pan temp reached 207F and my torque converter temp reached 216F. Other TH-camrs, towing 8000lb with the same Tundra setup reached pan temperatures of approx. 245F. IMHO that's too hot, although Toyota says it's fine.

    • @johnvgig
      @johnvgig 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They tan g to he same test with a Chevy Silverado that had trans cooling lines going inside the engine radiator and the max temp was 214F. That's 31F difference. Toyota engineers said all's good to 250F. I'll be putting in a fluid to air cooler, because I want to get 200k+. Bought it used with 106K.
