Wow. This talk still holds up 10 years later. And all that time she’s been doing the work and walking the talk. Well done, Ava DuVernay!

She is my hero. This speech changed my life as an actor, musician and just as a person. Shifting my energy to DOING and focusing on what I have instead of what I wish I had... it has changed everything. And I play this for every acting class I teach.

Thank you for posting this. I stayed awake to watch it to the end. I'm an actor everything she said can really be applied to actors and how we approach or reach out to Casting Directors, Directors etc and how we approach producing our own work. I am guilty of focusing on all the things I don't have i.e. money, fancy equipment, a huge team, etc. She really made me take an inventory of the things and people I truly have and it honestly makes me a lot less scared of the journey ahead. I feel empowered to move forward and worry less about having coffee and rubbing elbows with all these people that I believed would help me when I do not have any real work to show. I was on the "I'd like to make films" train before seeing this I've packed my bags at 1:46 am and I'm transferring to "Yo I'm making this webseries!"

Thank you for this! It feels right! Some of us are told we aren't acting "hungry" enough, so then we portray ourselves as desperate. After watching this, I returned to "My little world" and it does feel right! So, so right! Thinking about this today, this also applies to men & women who feel so desperate to get married, have children & white picket fence. No! Work on self! In other words, take care of your business/passion and your passion/business will take care of you!

"I took off my desperation. I wore it like a coat. Things started going my way when I knocked it off. The barriers have changed. It's all possible." - Ava DuVernay

This was amazing! I needed to hear it for sure. And side note, I also tell everyone I want to be one of the old black women still making films so it was funny to hear someone else say it. It's so unfortunately rare but times are changing!

I love Ava! I am really inspired by this woman. As a woman in an industry completely dominate by your complete opposite, going into this career is scary. But seeing her success has made a believer out of me. It is possible to be a woman and a woman of color and do well in Hollywood. I love her and I can't wait to see what she will do moving forward. Film is a beautiful and an extraordinary medium and I can't wait to embark on a new journey in it! #TeamMovies

Love you Ava. Love what you're doing. You are truly inspiring. Thank you for forging through, being a role model and setting an amazing example. To the people who gave this the thumbs down-?- I suspect you all are wearing a 'smelly coat of desperation'. #justsayin'

Great keynote. What she says applies to every artist. Work with what you have and you'll be on the rolling 'I do train' in stead of the stagnating 'Can you help me out?' train. I'm sure the first one will attract the right people in time.

"When you spend more time focusing on what you don't have rather than working with what you do have - that's desperation, and not passion" - that's enough to chew on right there. Great talk.

So much great "filmmaking stuff" that you learn along the way in this speech. This is worth tens of thousands. Director's commentaries 27:00...I find myself critiquing them now. If they don't respond to the technicality and just talk over the film, "Boooooooo"! Thanks Ava and Film Indie.

I've always dressed like me, minimalist (some say), cuffie/ tea shirt/jean jacket, sneakers and etc. Some called me a beatnik/hippie because I love history/music/poetry/comedy, no longer working in a bureaucracy...so much freedom now! my aunt was a poet, I danced back in high school ( they called it modern dance) lol yrs ago. I love the arts....planning some things now!!...Thank U Ava for doing what you are doing.......

She's a person who puts people into moral categories according to their race (by the way, that's called a "racist"). But people are not first groups or "communities," but individuals - some good, some evil - does not matter the color of your skin (as Dr. King said). Her views are the last thing America needs, if we are ever going to make progress coming together.

50k for a 1st film is way out of reach for 99% of indie film makers..use what you have, locations, equipment etc, use actors that will work for no pay or deferred pay, only demo and resume material as every actor needs these at first more than money..a film can be made for less than 1k if planned out properly and everyone cooperates..
